Yes, but there are always those odd occasions where the OEM media has been lost - or was never provided - and the machine needs to be flattened/reloaded. Previously Dell media has always been the cleanest fallback when paired up with another OEM's COA key. So a totally legal repair that doesn't leave the client hanging for days waiting on a disk, or hemorrhaging stupid money for overnight shipping.

The behavior surrounding 8/8.1 implies that the paying customer must suffer the time/money loss to protect the poor starving corporation... This is simply unacceptable.

I had the same initial reaction (/answer), but didn't have time to post it. However in retrospect I don't actually recall seeing a OEM COA with a Product Key on any of the new Windows 8 machines I've encountered. So are you saying that there is no "latitude" in the OEM self activation scheme?

I don't use any specific forums other than EventID.net. Everything else is generally an attempt to separate nomenclature from lingo in an attempt to synthesizing a correct way of phrasing the issue. Once that is done, much of the idiot suggestions (e.g. noise) disappear allowing a solution to be found with a Bing or Google search.

It truly is amazing how you can search on a problem for days with no results, and then after rephrasing the question a bit...find hundreds of references to the correct answer.

I don't know. I'd assume that 2.0 would have already snuck in there with one of the MS chronically semi-forced Windows updates. But MSVS Pro/Std never seemed to care what was installed, it just listed all the currently available version options.

IIRC It should just be a (.NET dependency version) dropdown menu (which defaults to the highest available) in the project creation wizard. In the few times I've gone that (C#) route I always pick the oldest version that will give me the features I'm after. How to change it after the project is created I've not a clue.

Years ago I wrote a program I called DNS Ping-Pong which was really just a service that sent a signed "ping" on a high range port every 30 seconds to a listening app at a one or more remote locations. This way I could keep track of and maintain access to a network as the IP address changed. One of the clients using it was taken over by a corporation that liquidated the office and hauled off all the equipment overnight. I spent the next few years tracking the server all over hell as nobody ever noticed my little service running on it...which continued to report home.

SJ, I don't know how you made it work.   On every instance of the = it followed the rtule staed in first reply.  the = had to have a space afterward.  Also using 8.1 so I don't know what the difference is.

Hm... That is weird. I just pasted 4wd's string into an admin CP, changed the target service to fax (as it's unused and breakable), hit enter and checked the results. I was actually expecting it to fail...but it worked just fine. *Shrug* I don't know..

Okay, so if we mash those last two posts together we see the already budding infrastructure of "The Grid" in the form of the local power company's existing PowerLine network. And by that I mean the new digital meters they rolled out a few years ago, about the same time that the horde of manual meter reader staff suddenly disappeared. Funny how that presumably rather large cost savings was never passed on to the consumer..

So now they use a variation on PowerLine networking to remotely monitor and collect each houses power usage to calculate their bill. Which - regarding the other post - then begs the question how hard would it realistically be for them to "contact" the LED lights within a house from this system which is directly attached to it?

I was thinking like x16wda that the space was necessary also ... But that's probably just because the documentation on SC.exe says it is a requirement.. *Shrug*

But...

As an example, the following worked fine for me, (Win8Pro x86):

sc failure browser actions=restart/60000/restart/60000/restart/60000 reset=86400

First, Second, and Subsequent actions Restart after 60 seconds, failure counter reset after 1 day for service Computer Browser (service name = browser).

Hm... There is sort of a president for this in regard to domain squatting fore the sole purpose of extortion IIRC. I actually looked into it once because of the TClock.com domain being registered (for 10 years out) but never used for anything. But I'd really like to see the list of 22 seized domain names before going there.

You might want to use NAT networking instead of bridged networking. Networking can be fidgety sometimes when working with VMWare or any other virtualization software for that matter.

Really? Granted I'm not that familiar with VMware as I've always used the MS (Virtual PC/Hyper-V) offering. But for a cursory search it appears that VMware's "bridged networking" is equivalent to Hyper-V's "Shared Virtual Switch", which I've used extensively. Our productions systems have 20 virtual servers running on a virtual switch, some of which have public IPs and some are behind the router's NAT ...(yes, that is two different virtual switched)... and I've never had a problem with any of it.

Now granted this could be a VMware quirk I'm unaware of (I am honestly curious about this), but it seems to me - from a networking standpoint - that having the route to a hosted service double NAT'ed would be much more problematic to maintain.

The error description is not too clear. Are you very sure nothing else is blocking the port(s) required by Owncloud/IIS?

I was actually headed here myself being that 8080 probably is not allowed by the Windows firewall by default. Also if for some reason they have a port hardcoded somewhere in the code it could be failing to find itself for that functionality. Page refresh and a netstat -n on the server might bring that to light.

Indeed, because there will always be a group - usually the one that pushed it through - that is dying to tryout a new law like this. So with a wanton desire to make a few examples ... many SMB's that have legitimate mailing lists could get vaporized just for having a system that isn't quite fully automated, contains a few of the right outdated/incorrect addresses, and had the dumb luck of sending a monthly mailing to close to the path of one of the crusaders.

This isn't about solving anything, this is all about effecting a body count to make it look like something is being done.
