Yeah what you are noticing are the lingering oddities present due to the dual licensing of the program as a free and commercial version.. still a few tweaks to be made.

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 31 - Final Wrap Up
« Last post by mouser on April 01, 2011, 02:20 AM »
Well the time has finally come to wrap up the fundraiser month, tuck all the baby cody bird's into bed, and say thank you to everyone who donated.

It's been a busy month, and the fundraiser has been a great experience for all of us here at DonationCoder.  Seeing the support from everyone always helps rejuvenate us.

It makes working on the site more enjoyable and it makes us want to work even harder to ensure the site is useful to those that support it.

We raised a whopping total of $14,239 from  over 600 individual donators.

Thank you everyone for making the fundraiser so special and for supporting the site.

General Software Discussion / Re: What the hell is OpenCandy?

Or another way to ask is, do you sufficiently trust this developer and their partners, and the choices they make about their software and how they distribute it?  If not, you probably don't want to run their software, with or without any bundled installer, advertising dll, etc.

Unless you are prepared to never install anything made be anyone who you don't completely trust -- or insist on reading carefully through every line of open source code before you run it, you are taking some risks and putting some trust in others work.  Frankly it seems to me that a company like OpenCandy, even if you don't trust their motives, is probably orders of magnitude safer to install and less likely to be trouble, than most random shareware and commercial software made by people who you don't know.

We did it!

We broke past our top fundraising goals and passed our record fundraising amount from 2009. Awesome.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

This was really an awesome month and a great experience.

Looks like time to call it a wrap!

It seems to me a good solution for authors releasing open source material is to always provide the option of a "portable" non-installer download.  Whether the installer is open source or not, just as a matter of convenience.

Whether the dll is left as part of the installer/uninstaller or not, i don't see the problem.

Now if using the installer permanently put some background process that was running even after you installed your program of choice, that would be a completely different matter and i would be up in arms, but otherwise this seems much ado about nothing to me.

ecaradec had good advice here:
If this doesn't work try disabling all plugins but this one inside FARR to detect if there is a conflict of some sort.

remove all your other plugins other than the test one -- it's very possible that one plugin could be improperly telling farr that it has "handled" the trigger and thus prevent other plugins from having their OnProcessTrigger function called.

App I have to disagree with you on the point about the installer needing to be open source for an open source project.

It would of course make sense that someone philosophically drawn to the open source movement would want an open source installer, but i don't see any reason anyone distributing their open source software should have to avoid using a closed source installer or shouldn't be able to show advertisements during their installer setup, etc. if that's what they want to do.

It's fully functional, non-expiring, and has no feature limitations. The only thing that home users will see is a tiny bit of text on printed flipbooks that says it's not for commercial use.

Event operators need to purchase a commercial license from OpenAirEventSolutions, and that removes that text.

Ok it's official, we have just broken our very intimidating fundraising record from 2009 of $13,838.  I didn't think there was a chance in hell of that happening when we started, what with the global economy being the way it is.

It's all thanks to the amazing and generous and encouraging people who have made DC possible since it's start.  It's a great day for DC.  Thank you to everyone who has donated now and in the past.

we have discussed so many times on this forum the evil of false positives and the laziness of security software in blithely reporting things as threats when they have no idea what they are looking at.  one wonders what it's going to take to make antivirus companies get serious about stopping this disgraceful behavior with regard to false positives.

but back to serious discussion -- i think if his wings are clipped/missing, the arguement about him just jumping off might be null and void -- it may not be something he could do so easily right?

i can't disagree with anything nudone says -- which is why i started off my comment saying that i really don't know if the parrot was scared.  hey he's a bird it's possible he loved it.  but it's hard to know.

my comment was focused on the fact that the owner doesn't seem particularly interested in whether the bird is terrified or not, which is the red flag for me.

if he was sitting there saying: "i love my bird and i'm convinced he loves the ride" -- i wouldn't have a complaint.

All this donating temporarily broke the thermometer!

it is hard to imagine they would do this on purpose.. a 3rd party software seems the likely culprit.. the real question is how does it get on the pc and when..

Living Room / Samsung accused of pre-installing keyloggers in their new laptops
« Last post by mouser on March 31, 2011, 12:24 AM »
Yikes, if you have a recent Samsung laptop, you may want to check out this story from today's edition of Network World.

This turned out to be yet another FALSE POSITIVE by a lazy antivirus company.

Samsung Electronics is investigating allegations that some models of its R Series laptops contain keylogging software that could be used to record anything typed on the laptop computers.

Mohamed Hassan said he became aware of the issue last month, when he purchased a Samsung R525 at a Best Buy in Toronto. The laptop had keylogging software on it, which he deleted immediately. Two weeks later, Hassan decided he wanted a more powerful machine, so he returned the R525 and bought a new model -- the R540, at a local FutureShop. To his surprise, the keylogger was there too, Hassan said in an interview Wednesday.

"These were new systems. They weren't used for anything," he said. "I could give them the benefit of the doubt on the first one. But then when I got a second model, a different model from a different store, that tells me that Samsung is aware of the problem."

Hassan, an IT consultant based in Toronto, said that Samsung tech support told him: "We just put it there to find out how the computer is being used."

Is the parrot terrified by it?
i don't know and i don't know think the owner knows or cares -- which is what makes him an assh*le; how people can get enjoyment out of trying to scare some creature is beyond me.

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 30 - Flipbook Printer Suite (FlipSuite)
« Last post by mouser on March 30, 2011, 10:27 PM »
So for today's release I posted a large new application I've been working on for a while, FlipSuite.

FlipSuite is actually the evolution of a program I wrote quite a while ago called Flipbook Printer; the new application incorporates robust video recording functionality as well as numerous improvements and bugfixes.  Read more about it in the FlipSuite forum section.

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 29
« Last post by mouser on March 30, 2011, 10:23 PM »
I'm a little late posting this, but Day 29 of the Fundraiser was a busy one.

Yesterday we opened up the giant end-of-the-fundraiser giveaway form which everyone is clamoring to enter.  And then a new big newsletter went out -- summarizing the best forum posts in the last month or two, as well as putting out the final call for donators to help us cross the fundraiser goal line.

And lastly, DC member JavaJones posted a long review of a cool new backup application/service called CrashPlan.
13820
I'm happy to announce the release of FlipSuite 2 (aka Flipbook Printer Suite 2).

v2.04.01 - June 3, 2011
  • [BugFix] Fixed crashing that could occur after printing.
  • [MajorFeature] Added new special flipcap capture mode that captures only a specific number of frames explicitly, without audio.  This can result in much smaller files, faster capturing user interface, and the ability to handle larger resolution captures.
  • [MinorTweaks] Minor tweaks to improve capture user interface.

FlipSuite is the evolution of a previous program of mine, Flipbook Printer (designed to let you print "Flip Books" from video movie files on pre-scored business card paper or a professional card cutter) , combined with the video recording features of another of my programs (Webcam Video Diary).

Where Flipbook Printer was made to print out video files that had been recorded using other means, FlipSuite includes substantial video recording functionality built-in, something that Flipbook Printer users have long requested.

It includes all of the functionality of Flipbook Printer, as well as some major feature improvements and bug fixes.  The program can still be used as a standalone flipbook printer and my intention is to retire the independent FlipbookPrinter build in favor of FlipSuite.

FlipSuite's development was funded by the company that now owns the commercial rights to the software, OpenAirEventSolutions.com and they have generously allowed us to continue to distribute a fully functional free version.  The only restriction for personal users is a tiny bit of text on the far left margin that states the program is not to be used for commercial purposes.  If you wish to use FlipbookPrinter or FlipSuite in a commercial enterprise you need to contact them and purchase a commercial license.

There are a TON of options in this program -- and the default options may not be suited for your needs -- so please be prepared to spend some time getting it configured for your best usage.

We are now up to 50% coverage of the sitemap (the sitemap in question basically represents 25,000 most recent forum threads) and forum posts are now in google an hour or two after they are posted, which is actually pretty darn impressive on google's part.  And sitemap coverage has been going up daily .

We became almost invisible there for a while, but it seems like people should be able to find our forum content pretty well now when they do a web search, and it's only getting better.  And that's a good thing

Site/Forum Features / Suggestion: Kickstarter Featurer
« Last post by mouser on March 30, 2011, 01:32 PM »
I don't think we have featured kickstarter projects nearly enough -- it seems to me something we really ought to be encouraging more in terms of encouraging independent projects.

If there is anyone on the forum who follow kickstarter on a daily/weekly basis and feels like they could objectively pick out 1-3 projects each week for an extended period of time, it would be nice to have a weekly featured post/blog highlighting them.

Any takers? Preferably someone who has been a DC member for a while.
