There is a preference in FF for that which I've used for a very long time. I'll poke around and see if i can find it for you.

Ehtyar.

It is in the javascript options on the Content page in Options, if it is the one I'm thinking about. That does have selections that allow you to permit or deny web authors to resize windows, strip the status and/or title bar and menus, and to disallow the right-click context menu. However I tried all and none covered the Snopes script which disallows highlighting of text.

If your setting is a different one, please do tell!

Thanks!

Aha! Found it! Your last post made me go through all my extensions and GM userscripts again, just in case I was forgetting something. I was - a userscript I had installed very recently; maybe a week or so ago. I had forgotten all about it.

It's called "Anti-Disabler" and I installed it after once again trying to highlight and copy some text - I think from Snopes Urban Legend site. I searched for a hack to get around the script Snopes uses to block the ability to highlight text on their web site for whatever reason. The userscript works great for its intended purpose, but apparently can cause a few unforeseen glitches.

I disabled it and Voila! All seems well again. Well, at least on that J-B Pets page I mentioned.

Thanks for the "poke", Ehtyar!

Works for me. I'm on 3.5.2. Are you sure you don't have an addon or a userscript interfering with it.

Ehtyar.

None installed recently, though a few that I use have been updated fairly recently. Extensions, that is. Not sure which, though. Almost all the extensions I use now I have used for quite a long time without issue. Really baffling - but then again, these things always popup mysteriously. Wouldn't be any fun if they didn't!

When I finally figure this out I'll probably be smacking my forehead, saying, "Of course!!". But until then it is frustrating.

Thanks!

Some examples are probably necessary for those of us who haven't experienced the problem first hand, and for live debugging purposes.

Ehtyar.

Well then I'll have to wait until I come across it again. At first I just thought these were isolated problems on the web pages since I had never seen this using Firefox before. Then after getting a few more recently I would open the same page in Chrome and/or IE to test them there and found that it was only Firefox that was having problems. Or at least my current installation of Firefox, not Firefox generally since I am not finding a lot of others with this problem. Am finding more than I expected however. But I can't be sure of which pages this happened on.

So as soon as I see it again I'll post the pages here.

Thank you.

Jim

Aha - I looked at some pages in my FF history and found one that was also in my Chrome history:  http://www.jbpet.com/Medium-Migrators,1753.html

That's a page with dog toys at J-B Pets. In Chrome if I click on the thumbnails next to the main image the main image changes. But in FF nothing happens at all for me.

Living Room / Firefox 3.5 - A Few Problems Recently...
« Last post by J-Mac on August 11, 2009, 04:19 PM »
Firefox 3.5 has been acting a bit strange lately. I haven't changed the configuration - knowingly, anyway - but recently something doesn't seem to be working with either javascript or Ajax - I'm not certain which, if either. Here's what is happening:

On pages where a list of thumbnails appear below a larger image where normally you can click on a thumbnail and the larger image shows that thumbnail's image. Not a hard click or a page loading, but the image just switches quietly. No longer works for me. Yet if I open the same page in Chrome or even IE7 or 6 it works fine.

Similar problems with certain fly-out submenus: In Firefox 3.5 the submenus sometimes fly-out as designed but are not "clickable"; on some other pages the fly-outs don't work at all. Yet, again, they all seem to work fine in Chrome and IE.  No new extensions installed though some have had updates installed. None that I can think of address javascript or Ajax directly though I'm sure that many do in one way or another.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this? I know I haven't given much to work with here but I'm hoping that this is a familiar problem to someone here who knows the kind of coding that make menus and image-switchers work like they do.

Thanks!

I tried Escape - didn't work; didn't try the Enter button. Alt-Tab wouldn't work; once explorer.exe freezes nothing displayed will respond, unfortunately.
Could you get the task manager?  Often, in that situation, ending the process 'explorer.exe' and launching another instance fom File/New Task (Run...) will dig you out of the hole. (If that was the first thing you tried and you're now rolling your eyes do the usual and try to pretend that I don't exist).
-cranioscopical (August 04, 2009, 02:28 PM)

.... I used Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Windows Task Manager to try and close whatever was not responding but as soon as I would click on the Task Manager window another LBC error popup would lock up all windows again.....
-J-Mac

I mentioned that above: I could get the Task Manager to show using Ctrl-Alt-Del, but could click anything without the error popping again and locking up explorer.exe anew.

I was adding programs to the new menu and couldn't find one of them - damn developers that insist on putting their programs in a program file with a different name: one of my biggest annoyances.
Hi, Jim.  My message is not directly related to your LBC problem, but what you said about not being able to find a program with an unexpected name reminded me of many times when I've had the same problem.  I've found that the Everything search engine is often invaluable in such circumstances.  I'll ask it to search for the name by which I know the program, and even though the program may be located in a folder with a different name, there will usually be SOME file with the "right" name in the same folder.  That helps me get to the right folder, and then it's usually pretty easy to figure out which file to put into LBC.

You may have tried this already, but I thought I'd suggest it just in case.

Yeah, I use Everything, but when you're in the middle of doing something and can't find it...  I knew I had opened it once via Start>All Programs and I use that so infrequently I knew there was a good chance the program would be listed in the Recently User section of the Start menu.

Thank you.

i'm sorry.

there are 2 tricks you can use when you get into this evil situation where a window message is hiding behind another window and you can't click it:

  • One is to hit escape or enter to try to acknowledge and close the error message.
  • The other is to hit alt+tab to cycle back to the application with the error message -- this often brings the error message to the front.

Regarding you hitting save button and it not saving the file -- it should have saved it -- make sure you actually have the launchbar file open that you last worked on.  Sometimes what happens is that when a crash occurs, LBC will have saved the latest file, but not remembered that you were working on that file, and load the last one you were working on before that.

I tried Escape - didn't work; didn't try the Enter button. Alt-Tab wouldn't work; once explorer.exe freezes nothing displayed will respond, unfortunately.

I think I had my dock open. It's the same name and all else was the same - except that last menu node missing. I saw other posts saying something about too many backup files - wouldn't LBC know to select the last used dock file? Or the last saved? Hope so...

Thanks!

mouser,

I was in the Configure Preferences dialog adding a new menu to my only dock and LBC locked me up but good. I was adding programs to the new menu and couldn't find one of them - damn developers that insist on putting their programs in a program file with a different name: one of my biggest annoyances. Anyway I was looking for the program in the browse dialog to select the program/command and I decided to move my cursor down to my Start Menu>All Programs to find where the damn thing was hiding. Of course the browse dialog for LBC jumped to the root, as is normal. I clicked on the Back arrow to return to the Program Files directory and LBC threw an error popup, though I could not see it - it was partially hiding behind the Browse window. While the error window was open I couldn't select/move/close any other windows at all; apparently the error was locking up explorer.exe. I used Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Windows Task Manager to try and close whatever was not responding but as soon as I would click on the Task Manager window another LBC error popup would lock up all windows again.

I finally had to shut down using the power button - first time in a very long time I was forced to do that.

Upon restart the new menu node was gone, even though I had clicked on the Save button within the LBC Preferences window a few times during configuration of the new menu node.

Oddly the Event Log has no corresponding event listed. This all occurred on a box running XP Pro SP2.

Living Room / Text Color vs. Highlight or Background Color Matching?
« Last post by J-Mac on August 02, 2009, 12:50 AM »
OK, time for J-Mac's stupid question #463: What is a good tool for properly matching text and highlight or background colors?

Some applications/editors automatically match the text background color with the text color. With many others though, you are on your own! So you highlight some text and realize that the default black text is no longer easy to see with whichever highlight color you applied. So you change the text to White and, well, OK; it is readable now but it doesn't quite look right. Hmmm... I can sometimes go on for quite a long time, mixing and matching text and highlight/background colors, trail and error, over and over again, until I finally get the combination that is like Mama Bear's Bed - just right! Of course then it is on to a second text highlight and I start scratching my head all over again.  :o

Now with all the different color charts, color wheels, java color matchers, etc. that are available on the web I can usually find something that I enjoy using and that works well, at least for me. But this time I can't find anything that fits the bill. Oh sure, there are many color charts out there, and several are really great. But I am hoping beyond hope to find one that resembles something like the following:

  • Perhaps a large grid with the blocks filled with potential background colors and showing some sample text in each that is the optimal foreground color that matches the background of that block.
  • Or maybe a regular color wheel or even a gradient chart that shows the best viewable foreground color for each background.

I did see one that seems to be designed for something like what I am trying to do. However it requests that I type in a color name for the background and then a second color name for a foreground and it will then show me the result. But that it the same as plain old trial and error and I can do that better by just trying every combination I can think of and then making a decision right then.

Anyone know of anything like what I describe?  Does anyone even know what the hell I am talking about?!?   :o  :-[    ;D

Thanks!

I need Robo Form. Chrome does not support it. Or robo Form does not support Chrome - Which is it? There is a program called "Fast Pass" that purports to be as good as, or better than, Robo Form. That's questionable. I tried to get it to work with Chrome but couldn't manage to make it work.  It's supposed to...

No, you might be thinking of LastPass - I never heard of "Fast Pass" - and LastPass indeed has won me over from Roboform. Something I didn't think would ever happen. And no, LastPass doesn't purport to support Chrome, as Chrome does not yet allow add-ons. However they DO offer bookmarklets for Chrome and Opera. I haven't tried them in Opera yet but they work very well - surprisingly well - in Chrome.

i need some clarificaiton.

you say
when I subsequently attached the image to another app

can you elaborate on the steps.  i get that you have it set to show the sc popup window.
then what do you do.. and do you see the full image in your sc window?
how are you getting the images from sc to the other app?

OK. I often use Alt-Prnt Scr to capture windows. In this case I was capturing screenshots of various application windows to insert them into the "Screenshot" dialog in SoftCAT, a software inventory database program.

When I make a capture I have SSC configured to show its popup. In all instances today after capturing the screenshot of each application window I clicked "Keep Image and Hide". In all the captures the thumbnail on the popup showed that I had indeed captured the entire window. Then I inserted the images into SoftCAT by clicking on the "Insert" button in SoftCAT which opens a pretty standard "Open File" dialog from which to select the image I wish to bring into SoftCAT. After I saw the messed up Clipmate image I opened the main window of Screenshot Captor to see what the image looked like there. To my surprise the image there was messed up too. Just a little piece of the title bar. Even though the SSC popup showed the full Clipmate window when I first made the capture.

After that little surprise I started opening SSC to the main window after each individual capture. In two more instances the SSC popup showed a thumbnail of the full window but upon opening SSC the image was cut down to a small part of the title bar - just like the Clipmate image. So it wasn't SoftCAT that was doing something funny. Screenshot Captor is doing this all by itself.

I cannot replicate this behavior on demand, but if I make enough captures a small percent of them come out like this. Just started with 2.70.01.

Jim
1389
Odd behavior in SSC 2.70.01. I usually make my capture and then keep the image and close the SSC popup, especially if I'm making a number of captures one after the other. Today all my captures looked fine in the thumbnail on the popup, yet when I subsequently attached the image to another app to image had changed to only a small piece of the original image.

I have attached a couple examples:

[attachthumb=#1][/attachthumb]

[attachthumb=#2][/attachthumb]

[attachthumb=#3][/attachthumb]

These were captures made of the FULL size windows of Clipmate, OneNote 2007, and NoteZilla respectively - if the attachments are loaded in the order I uploaded them; can't see them till after posting unfortunately - preview doesn't show them.

As I said the popup for each of these showed the full window in the thumbnail. Yet after attaching the Clipmate image and seeing it was now only a partial I started checking carefully and saw the same behavior with the OneNote and NoteZilla images. I made identical captures after these and they were correct. All captures were made using the hotkey Alt+Prnt Scr. About two to three dozen other captures made at the same time were OK.

What could cause this? Never happened before in over two years of using Screenshot Captor quite heavily.

Thanks!

Jim

Now that I think about it more, it hasn't happened recently - maybe a month ago that I can remember. But it used to happen at least three or four times a week to me - on my desktop's XP Pro or my notebook's Vista Ultimate. If I was browsing a lot it would happen a few times a day. Up to about a month ago, maybe three weeks. Not sure.

Maybe FF 3.5 helped?

Jim

EDIT:  Here's one place I mentioned it briefly last year. I think I mentioned it a few times but I never started a thread about it.

I often must refresh the tab with DC loaded - a "fresh" page reload, bypassing the cache. Been like that for at least a year now. Sometimes even if I have cleared the cache at the start of the day DC loads like that for me. Something in your CSS mouser that is definitely different than other sites, as I have never encountered this in other forums.

Can or did BitsDuJour ever give such good offers on Norton Internet Security 3-years license or 50% discount on Microsoft, Corel or Adobe product keys?

Don't know, but you might want to ask this in a new thread instead of one about Conceptworld apps. Your question will not be seen by a lot of members here as most will only look if they have an interest in Piky Suite. Just a suggestion!  :)

-conceptworld (July 22, 2009, 02:11 AM)

Thanks Gautam.

Yes, I have seen the demos, and they are indeed helpful. However I am still trying to get my head around how I would put Piky Suite to good use in the things I do on my computers and how I normally work. I know - sounds kinda weird! But understand that I had not even looked at Piky Suite before. Normally I have considered and thought about software before deciding on a purchase. In the case of Piky Suite I hadn't really considered it before. However because I do like both RecentX and Notezilla so much, using them both regularly and being very appreciative of Conceptworld's fast and effective product support, seeing Piky Suite available for a discount at Bits has me considering purchasing a software suite before even deciding if I truly need it. And I don't usually do that - can't really afford to do that!! So I was hoping to get some good user input to convince me that I'm not considering this without a good reason.

Am I making any sense at all? I think I'm confusing myself here!!   :tellme:  (Plus, after reading the above passage I realize I sound like a walking, talking Conceptworld advertisement!!   ;D  )

Thanks!

Jim

I already use Notezilla and RecentX from Conceptworld. I'm wondering if any users here at DC are currently using Piky Suite. I'd like to hear what you do with Piky Suite. I've read all that is written about the Piky apps at the Conceptworld web site but I am having difficulty picturing just how I would actually use it. Often when other users here post about how they are using certain applications that light bulb lights up in my head and I see possibilities for my own workflow. I know that I could install the trial and play with Piky Suite for a while but I would much rather hear what other DC users say about their experiences.

Thanks!

You could probably use any decent map and take a screen capture of it. Then bring it into Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro and hack away at it. I haven't heard of any software specifically designed for what you ask.

The Kindle was omitted probably due to the big stink going on about Amazon remotely deleting books that users had paid for.

Very distasteful, ubt actually required by law. Would have been nice if they had notified everyone first but as I understand it they felt they could be held liable and fined if they didn't act immediately. Could be BS for all I know.

No good - still have to exit KIS to use the Nircmd to shut down!

Probably the main reason I use NOD32 instead of KAV. KAV (I just used the AV, not the Internet Security) used to eat up any app I had on my PC from Nir, plus various other innocuous apps. No amount of tinkering with exclusions could save them. I turned off so much of the heuristics that it was probably not protecting me from much at all; didn't help. Forum posts didn't get me any help either. It seems that Kasperskey prefers to decide what you should and should not have on your computer, whether you agree or not.
