General Software Discussion / Re: Best program to manage information collections?
« Last post by Armando on February 20, 2008, 11:21 PM »
I agree with superboyac (well, in terms of managing information collections). I'm going to transfer most of my stuff in there too... when it goes out of beta, when the (minor) quirks are ironed out, and when it's easier to import exotic stuff.

I personally find SQLNotes very addictive. I'm already leaving EverNote behind (don't use it anymore), and soon it will be Outlook.

Armando thinks it's not difficult, I'll just say it's getting easier as beta progresses

;D actually, I'd say that the underlying principles, etc. are simple to grasp. But there are many many many subtleties I'm still trying to understand.

Living Room / Re: GPLv3 explained
« Last post by Armando on February 20, 2008, 10:06 PM »
GPL version 3 seems interesting. But there'S certainly no unanimity around it. Linus Torvald (another very objective figure  :)), for instance,  repeatedly said that he wouldn't (single handedly) adopt it for the Linux Kernel (of course, IIRC partly because he feels that he's not alone in that decision : so many people contributed to the kernel that it's not only his decision anymore; and he doesn't see how it could help linux development better, and how it would really help fighting "Tivoization").

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Armando on February 20, 2008, 09:28 PM »
Yes, I understand that perfectly well... But that's not my question. My question is simple. You say :

If an item has multiple parents shown in the grid, I believe, it puts the item under the main parent.

And that seems to apply to "flat view"

But what's the rule governing what duplicate children goes under which parent in the hierarchical view?
(was expecting that each would go under its main parent or something like that, but in a very strict and logical way. But I fail to see the logic. Again : look at the screenshot. Some subitems are duplicated and some not, and there are no apparent reasons. All the subitmens have the same main parent, they have the same fields filled. Yet, "boy john" is the only one that's not duplicated and appears under a parent that's not its main one.  :tellme: )

This is what I don't get.

The flat view is not a problem : each parent have all the expected children.

Yes I was expecting that the subitems would be under their main parents, but that's not what's happening, as I said.

In the hierarchical view, the "mummy rose" item has only 2 children, even if it is the main parent of 3 items including "boy john". And "2nd daddy eugene" item has 1 child, "boy john", even if it's not the main parent.

Thanks Pierre. I understand the usefulness of not showing certain subitems, and showing others. But how do I know what's going to show as subitems and what's not? What's the rule?

In my previous example, I still don't understand why "boy John" is not appearing in "mummy Rose"'s children ( ;D I'm starting to feel a bit stupid with my silly characters), but others will. They all obey to the same criterias, they ALL have Mummy Rose as their main parent.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Armando on February 20, 2008, 08:55 PM »
Thank you very much Pierre.

I'm still not absolutely sure why certain items would show in 2 places (like you said) and not other items (in my screenshot : Girl Diane and Girl Rebecca are "duplicated", but not "boy John"). Especially in a grid situation where a source would be based on a filter such as category alike "test" (where "test" is a key word among many other keywords) -- removing the word "test" from all the subitems just to have a clean hierarchical view would be pretty inconvenient.

Then, there is the "Show all sub items" option, which will effectively show all children. Unfortunately, this won't stick with a refresh.

So, in my very humble opinion -- I'm really willing to understand why it should be otherwise -- to facilitate visualization of the hierarchies, the default should probably be to always show all subitems. I just can't imagine a situation where I'd need it otherwise.

Sure. Thanks Pierre. I removed the checks as you said, and yes, it works.

(But ... While I still don't understand why I should uncheck the "test" field for children, what I mostly don't understand is why -- when all the children also have the "test" field checked -- is the item "boy john" specifically not represented beneath its 2 parents... while the others are represented (and hence have "duplicates"). Anyhow, take your time!  :)).

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Armando on February 20, 2008, 07:56 PM »
(I've decided to post here instead of the SQLNotes forum because I'm not receiving notices on a regular basis...)

I'm still struggling too with parents and children. I don't understand what I'm seeing.

1) Here are  my main settings.
- Item Saved --> OFF
- Context Parents -->OFF
- Hierarchy --> ON

No filter and 1 source (a yes/no field called "test").

2) I have 6 items (see the screenshot) :

1- Girl Rebecca
2- Girl Diane
3- Boy John

4- Mummy Rose
5- Daddy Bernard
6- 2nd Daddy Eugene

3) Ok, so here are the relationships in our family :

“Mummy Rose” is the parent of  all children :
- Girl Rebecca
- Girl Diane
- Boy John

“Daddy Bernard” is the parent of two children :
- Girl Rebecca
- Girl Diane

“2nd Daddy Eugene” is the parent of one child :
- Boy John

All the children have the same main parent : Mummy Rose.

4) According to my understanding the grid should look like that (when hierarchical view is enabled, with the settings described earlier):

--2nd Daddy Eugene
------ Boy John

--Daddy Bernard
------ Girl Rebecca
------ Girl Diane

--Mummy Rose
------ Girl Rebecca
------ Girl Diane
------ Boy John

But this is what I see (after refresh etc.) :

Screenshot - 2008-02-20 , 20_32_32.jpg

Why is that?

As you can see, Mummy Rose appears as the parent as only 2 children, while, in theory, she’s the (main) parent of three (and if you look at the screenshot you can also see that “Boy John” is selected and has 2 parents, his main one being “Mummy Rose”).

Mummy rose is the parent of 3 children, here's the proof  :) :

Since I'm having troubles with two other plugins (Google Dictionary and Google Translate), I wonder if something similar could be the problem.

Find And Run Robot / Re: add launcher "keywords" to farr?
« Last post by Armando on February 20, 2008, 03:17 PM »
Hi and welcome to DC!

I'm not sure if I understand your question...

FARR IS a launcher and will also search wherever you ask it too : options --> search folders.

There are also many many plugins for farr, and you can create special aliases -- keywords that will trigger special "features" or options, like searching the net with many search engines at once, etc.

There is also a help file with farr. Just click on the question mark.

Screenshot - 2008-02-20 , 16_10_41.jpg

Start with the BASIC USAGE page, and go on from there.

If there's anything else, don't hesitate to ask more questions. (Don't forget that there are tons of info in the forum too!)

yes, the delicious plugin works.

Also, these plugins you wrote work too :
- definr
- google calculator
- Character map

The only 2 that don't work are :
- google dictionnary
- google translate

EDIT : OK, it seems to be a display problem. Because I typed : "gd 10 school,"

and then I typed "a", just for fun... and my clipboard captured something :

v.t. обучать, обучить

But. I don't see anything in the main window. It remains empty. weird.

I tried playing with farr's display options, but i still don't see anything.

I haven't tried to reinstall farr... yet.

Any ideas?

1- ANDable Named filters
2- Grid history. Move backwards/forwards in the grid setting history

Nice. I saw #1 in mantis and in the forum, but didn't know about #2. This should ease work flow quite a bit

You're welcome!

PS you've given me a few good tips on searching & other stuff there

Good! But I'm sorry, nevertheless... about the mistake in my previous post where I wrote :

- category alike "a-%" (will show all items-invoices starting with "a-")
- category alike "%-2%" (will show all items-invoices starting with "-2")

I meant INVOICE, not category (which is the field/column you want to filter)... I was thinking in terms of my own grid...  :-[

BTW, you can get a lot of filter ideas by using the find feature (ctrl+f). You can also "direct" your searches inside a specific grid context and see the results in the very same grid by using the "source view" and "results in" zones. (in that case, just be careful if you've already set up nice filters that you like : they'll vanish, being replaced by the present search, hence new filters -- what I do is save filters I like for all my grids in a special grid named "filters"; in that grid, filters are organized hierarchically, by grid names and filter types (following the source bar UI) : source, filter, sorting).

EDIT/
* in "WorkDone" I have files as Parent items but wont give them InvoiceIDs themselves
i.e. File has subitems that are given invoice number
- SQLNotes01.psd
- - Drawing of same - 2hrs - Invoice#200

Exactly. This is how I was imagining the structure.  :)

So, like you suggested, there are basically 3 choices : 1- for each item, either write your different invoice numbers in different invoice fields, 2- or all in the same invoice field, 3- or... the "parent" way, which could work well.

Multiple (number) fields might probably a good way to sort (ascending, descending, etc.), etc IF your invoice numbers are... numbers only (but I see that you have a SO01, a mix of numbers and letters -- OK that was in the sample grid...  :-[).

The "parents way" looks good to me (probably the bes)... Well : each work could be a parent, and its subitems would correspond to multiple invoices. You'd have only one invoice field, and it would be easy to sort all invoices in "flat view" or even "hierarchical view", depending on your needs. You could have the itemparent field to be displayed in your grid if you choose such a way : it might facilitate seeing which invoice goes with which work (in flat view, for example...).

In any case, you might also have to create a date field called LastInvoiceDate (or whatever), that you'd edit yourself each time you add a new invoice (you could also just rely on the "itemCreated" field if you use the "Parent" way.)

IF you don't want to create a new field for each invoice or use the parent way maybe you could try to type the different invoice numbers in the same field, as you suggested? (And also, of course create the date field called LastInvoiceDate that you'd have to edit yourself each time you add a new invoice.)

For that way you'd have to :

1- Create a  Invoice multi-line and text field (in the "Manage field" window),
2- Create a LastInvoiceDate date field

Close the grid and reopen it to be able to activate the multi-line field (I believe that it's a bug in the Grid component)

Now, you could write each invoice number bellow the previous one (write the first one, shift+enter, then the other one, etc.), and maybe add a prefix to these numbers like : "a-", "b-", etc. (so you'll be able to easily find all "b" invoices, and see how many items have been billed 2 times, etc.

Sorting and filtering ?

--> Use a field-column filter to see specific invoice # : *b-*,*200*, or whatever...

--> Use the filter/source bar to see specific invoice numbers.

ie :
- Invoice alike "a-%" (will show all items-invoices starting with "a-")
- Invoice alike "%-2%" (will show all items-invoices starting with "-2")

[edit : before, i wrote category instead of invoice!!!! sorry : i was thinking in terms of my own grid!]

with this way, I don't think that it would be feasible to sort your invoices or items by number.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Alias sharing
« Last post by Armando on February 19, 2008, 05:14 PM »
Search SQLnotes Forum... Of course, this can be used to search any specific web site with google -- just modify the "http://www.sqlnotes.net/Forums/" address in the alias.

Performatted alias (for pasting in the alias window, with the "import preformatted alias" option in the context menu) :

1000>>>"Search SQLNotes Forum">->Google - $$1 | http://www.google.com/search?q=$$1 site:http://www.sqlnotes.net/Forums/ /ICON=icons\google.ico>+>^searchsqln (.*)

you can also download the alias as an *.alias file (see attached alias) and put it in your personal alias folder, in Farr's folder (usually : C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\MyCustom\).

write "searchsqln " (with a space) to use. You can edit the RegEx, of course, in the alias window. I use "searchsqln " just because it fits my current setup etc.

Congratulations Pierre : it works!
I still don't know what it was, but you certainly do!  ;D
What it was is the following:
The HTML Export will soon support email-merge. I was testing it before 0.9.22 release and decided to postpone it to 0.9.23 and instead added a context menu and email form to quickly generate emails.

Email merge will work much like the HTML template merge but will generate individual emails with personnalized information. I was testing different methods of generating emails and one of them used MSMAPI.OCX, a MS component to send emails. I had forgotten to include that control in the setup program, hence the form would not open. This is now fixed. Users must re-install using the setup program (no need to uninstall)

Oh, I see! Thanks for the info, Pierre.

some more stuff coming on the SQLNotes Forum!... Hope you'll find it stimulating, interesting. Not that you need more work/stimulation, of course...  ;D

For those who use farr and would like to use google to search SQLNotes forum (it works well for stuff posted a few days ago, but not for recent stuff), I created an alias. Just use the "Import : paste preformatted alias group" feature in farr. In the alias window, right click --->"Import : paste preformatted alias group", and paste that :

1000>>>"Search SQLNotes Forum">->Google - $$1 | http://www.google.com/search?q=$$1 site:http://www.sqlnotes.net/Forums/ /ICON=icons\google.ico>+>^searchsqln (.*)

In the farr entry zone, just write "searchsqln " (with a space) and type what you're looking for.
You can change the "searchsqln ", of course (I chose "searchsqln " because the "search"  term is already assigned to a hotkey in my setup... and so I just need to type sqln after it.

[edit : added and alias file for those who'd prefer this : just download and put the file in your C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\MyCustom\ folder (in find and run robot's folder) ]
