I don't like them doing it but how does harvesting raw data from a dynamic IP address help with marketing on Facebook?

I have purchased a copy.

If you are interested you get:

CD builder applications for both WinPE and Linux versions which will burn CDs or create ISO files.

The Linux version has some utilites that aren't on the WinPE version - ironically resetting Windows passwords only appears on the Linux CD!

You also get 12 months of updates/upgrades included

The license is to use the product for 12 months on any number of desktop machines and up to 10 servers and covers just about all current Windows versions.

After the 12 months the license allows you to use the product on a single PC.

Not sure how the license is enforced - given that it is a bootable CD how does it know how many machines you boot from - esp. if there is no internet connection?

How about this sort of thing:

http://www.matrox.co.../products/gxm/dh2go/

They do various versions for 2 or 3 screen (or more) and a variety of interfaces (VGA, DVI and HDMI, if I remember correctly).

Not cheap though.

Simple solution to all developers - include a huge unambiguous message in their installer:

"If you downloaded this software from CNET it is illegal and probably full of crap and viruses"

That would take them down pretty quick and force them to react rather than respond!

@Carol: Hard to tell by the squiggles how powerful it was (doesn't look like much), but did anyone over there report anything?
China rattling?
Pets hiding?
That'd be pretty far out if it did.

No - not strong enough in the UK to feel it but it is interesting to see the seismographs picked it up over 2000 miles away!

I'd guess it would be less that a 1 magnitude on the graph. I have seem a 4 magnitude and the wave amplitude overlaps about five rows!

I may have misunderstood but isn't PHP normally used for server side scripting?

Or are you wanting to try and run a server on a Galaxy?

I have to say I have tried looking for the UK tabloid article referred to in the original post in this thread and can't find it.

Sadly searching for:

"The Fourth Reich" Facebook

on Google brings up no references to tabloid newspapers but does have DonationCoder hitting near the top spot (just below three pages on Facebook).

Personally it doesn't surprise me that UK tabloids would stoop to such scummy and offensive headlines - the bar has been set incredibly low in the UK for newspapers and the tabloids seems to slip under it with plenty of room to spare. Some newspaper will print anything to appeal to the basest and most stupid human bigotry and then stand proud on the free speech platform. If anyone behaves like Nazis it is the ultra rightwing tabloid press in the UK (and Murdoch who encourages this kind of insensitive crap to make a quick buck).

What I do find sad is finding this quoted and discussed on here.

If you want to discuss the stupidity (or not) of Germany banning the Facebook 'Like' button - even though they claim Facebook privacy policy violates EU law then that is a good topic. Personally I think it probably does since FB doesn't seem to have any effective privacy policy or even privacy intentions other than to sell to the highest bidder and publish everything even when you don't want to and choose to opt out. You have to remember that FB originates in the US where the 1st Amendment and privacy seem to be mutually exclusive concepts (at least in the eyes of anyone who wants to publish stuff without good reason) and policies that are acceptable in the US probably do violate laws on data protection and privacy in other countries.

I am not saying I find Stephen offensive - but I do find the idea of "The Fourth Reich" and comparison's to Hilter offensive given everything the Third Reich stood for and did. It is not only offensive to the countless people who were slaughtered (and not just the Jews, many other groups also faced a form of eugenic genocide) but also the implication that today's Germans haven't learned the lessons from their own history - they are more educated about what went on in WW II than almost any other nation and have laws specifically making it illegal to deny the atrocities took place.

Comparing removing the Facebook Like button to Hitler's Germany is plainly ridiculous and only serves to trivialise an horrendous piece of history that some families still struggle to come to terms with.

Sorry just my 2p - please let's move on!

Haven't you noticed - Dell don't actually make anything. They assemble computers but apart from that everything else is just rebadged stuff from other manufacturers.

It is informative to see who has the most legal activity on the diagram. About sums up their attitude to innovation.

That pretty much damns Apple, but also places Kodak in a precarious situation.

True - but who thinks Kodak are any good (at least Apple has a fan base, however misguided)? Presumably all Kodak have left is taking people to court for patent infringement - they have basically completely destroyed all credibility as a technology producer - which is a shame as they used to make good cameras at least. Even they are total crap now. Don't even get started on the non-existent customer service!

I have 3 Samsung B2430H monitors and like them very much.

See http://www.amazon.co...p/product/B0037LIOO8

I may not be as picky as you though.

Relatively cheap, bright picture, crystal clear full HD. Colours do change marginally as you move - but not for just a few cm, you have to move a fair bit to see the effect (I can move my head 30cm to each side without noticing much difference at all).

Having said that my eyes aren't as good as they once were and I can't be sure it is not me but the monitor!

Actually if you look at the Apple patent I am pretty sure etch-a-sketch would have a case against Apple.

Now that would be a trial ...

For those who don't remember etch-a-sketch see: http://www.amazon.co...Sketch/dp/B000E69YJI

In fact you could say the iPad looks like a dumbed down etch-a-sketch because they forgot the knobs!

You're lucky then - I have spent many hours uninstalling printer software, downloading new versions (often in excess of 300Mb) and reinstalling and on a number of occasions I have been forced to reinstall Windows because of HP software.

The printers themselves print pretty well but I haven't seen a consumer model that isn't slow and noisy.

I used to use HP printers but gave up in frustration and moved to Canon - fast, quiet and the software is lightweight and easy to use.
1395
I was more thinking of their consumer products:

  • expensive PCs (made with the cheapest components - I have had more HP desktops fail than any other make),
  • fairly nondescript laptops (filled with crapware),
  • terrible printers (slow, expensive to run, noisy, error prone and with the worst software ever - guaranteed to break under normal use)

They did such a  good marketing job on Palm I hadn't even realised HP owned Palm - I thought it died years ago.
1396
Would anyone cry if HP disappeared altogether? I certainly wouldn't.

They will counter-sue but the damage is done in the EU - after all the advertising/promotion they are not allowed to sell any Galaxy 10.1 tablets that aren't already in the shops. If you live in the EU and want one don't wait!

Actually they will win in court (have you seen the stupid patent app!).

In the long run Samsung will come out on top in the EU - all everyone will remember was that the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 was the first device to really get Apple worried - especially as all the reviews say it is better than iPad2

I just registered a patent for the "Send" button in email clients ... now cough up DC users $10 a head!

I'd also decided to avoid rubber bands as they will perish - but I did try and find those elasticated hooks on eBay, tiny ones that is.

Any idea where I can get them from, f0dder? Or anyone?

AS an ex-rock climber I would suggest buying elastic chord from an outdoor supplier. You can buy very thin chord cheaply. It is immensely strong and very unlikely to perish within the lifetime of the computer. It is also stiffer than elastic bands so you can get a more rigid system whilst retaining some elasticity (so the machine won't be prone to the jitters if it is bumped or moved for some reason).

Something like this would do:

http://www.needlespo...-per-metre-CRD-SHOCK

There are even hooks listed on the page to make up the lengths you want with clip-hooks at the ends if you want (personally I wouldn't bother - poke the end through the hole, stretch it and tie a knot).
