General Software Discussion / Re: Launchy 2.0... and something else
« Last post by Lashiec on December 26, 2007, 10:54 AM »
Launchy 1.x already had a plugin system, with most (if not all) functions that external plugins provide to FARR, apart from the internal ones, including favorite searching. It's only that this time, the author integrated the searching within the program.

General Software Discussion / Re: Recommendations Destroying Storage Media??
« Last post by Lashiec on December 26, 2007, 10:46 AM »
You can create a bootable CD or DVD, or even a flash drive if you wish. DBAN is more appropriate for the kind of task that tinjaw asked about (I experienced this recently), than for what you inquire, but I think Eraser can be configured to wipe a disk from Windows, if it handles empty space wiping, it should handle the other task as well, it's a matter of installing it :)

Anyway, DBAN doesn't support drives on RAID controllers:

Q: Why doesn't DBAN detect the SCSI disks attached to my RAID controller?

A: RAID controllers are unsupported. Only regular SCSI host adapters are supported.

No, regarding the Cool'n'Quiet driver, it used to cause sound scratchiness a while ago, now it's not causing any problem. It seems to work at random... I researched the Internet back and forth in search for the cause and the solution, but I only found the (possible) cause. Thank goodness it was fixed by itself (it'll come back to haunt me tomorrow, just to piss me off ;D), but it remains one of those unresolved computing bugs, just like the one with the Lite-On drives (going offtopic...)

f0dder, any instance of sound scratchiness while doing things in the computer and you have some music playing in the background? (in a audio player, of course ;D)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Suggestion: List by Alphabet Letters
« Last post by Lashiec on December 25, 2007, 04:46 PM »
I think you misunderstood me.

What I said is that when you type, for example, 'Notepad' in the typing box to launch a desired program, and you get, say, 35 results, using your suggestion could mean something like this: just as you stop typing, you see the program you want to launch is binded to the 'P' key, so you press it, but instead of launching the desired program, FARR adds the letter to the present string in the typing box, resulting that FARR is now searching for 'Notepadp'. This is because the focus is in the typing box, not on the results list.

Solutions? The one I said before it's an option, another one would be using what you said, pressing 'Alt+<Alphabet Key>' to launch the app without typing the <Alphabet Key> in the typing box, and finally, pressing <Tab> (this is how it works now) to focus the results list and then press 'P' to launch the desired app.

I hope it's clear now :)

First result on Google. And they said Microsoft didn't have a set of UI guidelines like Apple...

I think it's a great idea, even if you're a seasoned user or programmer, once you get a new program, and you start testing it, it's reassuring to know what actions mean another step (thus giving you the option to go back) and which ones are not.

There's a problem with that approach in that it would conflict with the typing box, if you want to select the result labeled as 'P', you'd simply add 'P' to the search string. A workaround would be to switch the focus to the result list as soon as the search through the directories is finished, and select the item from there.

Not exactly, I used ffdshow exclusively in the past, but now I use a codec pack, the CCCP one, which uses ffdshow tryouts as the main decoder, but I understand it has some changes in comparison with the official build.

And if everything fails, VLC :)

Notice that the freeware one is "Mp3tag" and the shareware "mp3tag". This is what happens when you choose a popular name ;D

Don't know about "geeky", but lots of disaffected youth slouching by the front door...

Oh, no problem with those then. It's better to be a rebel teenager (it's the time to be so) than to steal the Wi-Fi connection from the neighbouring family (WEP is easily defeatable with the appropriate tools) and brag about it (huh, what an achievement...).

Isn't there a firmware update for your router that could bring WPA along with it?

With a well configured hardware firewall, I'd say that there's no need for a software one, unless you want total control over what's accessing the Internet on realtime, or you want to catch sneaky things after infecting your computer. Running the Windows' Firewall won't hurt, though.

Exactly, buying a format at this point is playing with fire. Unless you buy a PlayStation 3, if Blu Ray fails, at least you get a good gaming machine :)

Only KeePass and OTR, I don't have anything here that I would bother to encrypt (nor anyone would bother to take any interest). Well, except the Miranda database containing all my conversations, but mostly because that's of no interest to anyone (no blueprints of atomic bombs or plans to assault the United Nations building xD). I might use encryption for storing backup files in a remote server, but not on the local machine.

Ehm, actually Borland made available for free stripped-down versions of their IDEs for various languages, mostly due to the pressure of the Express Editions (or was the other way around?). Don't worry, commercial versions of both IDEs are continued to be sold, despite Borland being the less successful for various reasons (people don't like the VCL, etc.), and there's also room for open source alternatives (KDE Develop, Eclipse, whatever), after all, OSS costs money to business (support and all that).

I'm going to fix that article. .NET Framework 2.0 works in an OS as ancient as Windows 98.

And .NET Framework is not included at all in Windows XP SP2. 1.0 is a recommended install in Windows Update, as (supposedly) 2.0 is (I installed 3.5 before hitting the site, so I don't know).

General Software Discussion / Re: Any web service for file storing?
« Last post by Lashiec on December 21, 2007, 09:31 AM »
Yes, I did everything, but divShare is still no good. Looks like I better trust the tinjaw ;), and set up the webspace provided by the ISP. The site that will be getting the files is very strict in their rules towards naming and redirections, so the only thing that will work is personal webspace.

Apart from that, divShare performs wonderfully, so I'll bookmark it for when I need to send some files to friends. Much better than things like Rapidshare, and performs very much like PhotoBucket, which I love.

Well, problem solved. Thanks to everyone who posted their suggestions!

Ah, thanks, nosh! I'll give a try to that other one, as FileIO has turned out it has some peculiarities in its service that renders it unusable for what I need it to do. It's a terrific site, though, despite not being fully supported with Opera.
