I feel like I'm stating the obvious here but XP, like previous versions of win before it, has a disk defragmenter. Admittedly it doesn't run in the background telling you when to defragment but do you really need that feature? It sounds a bit like a waste of resources to me.

Otherwise though sorry, I'm not being of much help.

You might not need a new program, you could investigate running your current solution as an NT service which might hide it better. Not sure though.

Once you get going with C++ you'll want to check out the Boost libraries.

Also to confuse people with yet more options you can setup a nice console build environment with Boost Build System V2 (bjam). For my setup I use Programmers Notepad which has nice, if simple, project management, captures output from console programs like bjam and is able to nicely parse any errors and trace them back to the offending file, and has a couple of other nice touches.

Here's one that no one has probably heard of- "Vangers One for the Road". I really enjoyed that game, I must say I was a bit disappointed when a google for it just now turned up this review;

Confusing. Off-putting. Indecipherable. Mystifying. These are just a few of the words that crept into my mind as I wrestled with what should have been a fairly straightforward game of driving, combat, and resource management.

I really enjoyed the two Ultima underworld games. I played them on a 386 which couldn't really handle them, I remeber that nothing could jump out and surprise you because whenever the game tried you could hear the harddirve buzzing and you knew to expect what was coming.

Also remember a game called Reunion, it came on something like 8 floppies and took ages to install.

Oh and finally, the grand-daddy of all RTS's; Dune 2, loved that game.

Thanks for the links, that Beyond Compare was on discount on bits du jour just recently. Apps that go down into the file level and check for differences are almost too powerful. I happy enough to simply backup a whole new file it there is even just a small change, what I want to avoid is re-backing up a whole directory when only a single file has changed.

What I'd like is an app which could take a daily snapshot of a folder and it subfolders say so that I could go back to previous backups if a recent one was accidently corrupted or for whatever reason I may need to go back.

I thought I’d start up a discussion on available Synchronisation tools as I haven’t been able to find one which I’m happy with.

I’d better explain what I’m looking for first, I want a neat way to backup my programming projects, my ideal tool would perform incremental backups with a possibility to rollback.

Currently I use Synchronize It! It’s nice and has a number of important features which I’m looking for; with a combination of excluding certain folder names and filetypes I can get it to ignore binary files and just back up the source code for example. It doesn’t do incremental backups so currently I just backup to an empty folder which I date, 7z and copy into my backup folders.

Another possibility I’ve considered is running a subversion server on the backup computer at home, this would do the incremental backups I’d like but the current GUIs for subversion leave a lot to be desired. I use RapidSVN for other purposes but it doesn’t feel slick and certainly isn’t intuitive. I’m not prepared to install TortiseSVN as I just don’t want something which integrates with the shell. I reserve that privilege only for apps I use very VERY frequently. More importantly getting it to ignore the binary files is tedious and I don’t have the space to back up gigs of dll and import libraries (thank you Boost ).

I should also point out the Microsoft have release a free SyncToy, unfortunately its very simplistic with none of the advanced features I’m looking for.

Maybe people might like to share their own experiences and post links to any little gems they’ve found.

Not to be disagreeing with anyone but I read a different version of WASTE's story in the uk PC Format magazine. According to them WASTE's release as an opensource projects was unsanctioned move by one (the only one?) of the original WinAMP authors to try and regain some of the community credibility he lost when Nullsoft sold out to AOL.

AOL tried to undo the damage but were too late .

My first post here, hopefully the first of many

Like f0dder, C++ is my main language. I I were to start writing a serious project I definitly go striaght for WTL. Codeproject has an excellent WTL section and there have been a number of attempts to extract useful information from the sources with documenting tools; codeproject, viksoe.dk, Pallium and Gnomedia Codeworks are just four such examples. Between all of these resources you will usually find any help you need.
