General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service
« Last post by rgdot on February 25, 2012, 10:45 AM »
Thank you iphigenie, great stuff

I know what you mean by specific but FWIW Dropbox's folder location can be changed these days.  I think I am more or less a case #1. The files that I am comfortable putting online are moved to a location (dropbox for example) "manually", I don't use online options as a general purpose backup (everything on my drive)

My views on issues like this are obvious and I can repeat the lines again and again.

There is so much wrong in making deficits and national debts the number 1 obsession. It creates so much present hardship that is in no way compensated for future generations. Perhaps the greatest myth of the 20 and 21st centuries are convincing people that the debt on your credit card is the same as the national debt.

What governments should do and be is for the people now and in the future. Help people work and they will contribute to society now and later.

The biggest mistake is making Linux what it's not. Linux's 'not for newbie' tag is often justified but it is a mistake to solve it by making it look like others. May be I am in a minority because I am not even a fan of Windows shell replacements that make it look like another OS for example.

I think UI is there as a tool for people who are not comfortable with other options therefore you have to give them the tools. Windows has three buttons on the top right hand, right? I will choose the download that makes it 5 over the one that makes it 1 every time.

The Florida story is a good example of how 'ordinary' people are the tools of the system and a part of the problem. The problem is people, in America in this case, love to pretend to love democracy but don't come close to practicing it. Even if all other options are questionable you can't spend dozens of election cycles switching back and forth between only 2 and then hope everything will be ok.

« Last post by rgdot on February 21, 2012, 08:34 AM »
If you have shared emmanuelcaradec.com all instances of it become "shared". Google's method doesn't distinguish site folder, subdirectories, etc. Not at this point any way.

The moment this went live all my site's older reviews became shared too eventhough they were written way before Google+ existed.

As I have before, I will post this same line periodically until mouser bans me:

Still it's us, yes us, who are voting for these people and refusing 'alternatives' and 'third parties' with a convenient excuse that either 'they will become the same' or the perhaps worse 'other options will never be viable'.

One way to emphasis that it is an experiment is to put ads behind a spoiler/click to reveal.

AMPPS 1.6 is out. Wish they would make it portable, for me more useful that way.

I prefer TreeProjects because it does keyboard captures, organization of nodes (keyboard shortcuts to add a child or new item for example) and search more simply in my opinion. I also like TreeProjects' 'reference' item (basically items are referenced or 'exist' in more than one place in a database)

RightNote is more feature-rich though (calendar, spreadsheet support, paragraph styles, bookmarking web pages with an automatic thumbnail...just to name a few) I think one place you see that is when you right click a node or tree item in RightNote but I believe TreeProjects is adding or planning some similar features -  there is or was a roadmap page for TreeProjects - so it depends if you really need or want them.

For CSS menus CSS Tab Designer http://www.highdots....ts/css-tab-designer/ is free, somewhat limited but may be good enough

Not very hard to emulate, anything from WordPress ('turning off' blogging if necessary) to more complex CMSes (CMS Made Simple just to name one) should work.
