General Software Discussion / Re: Independent desktop shopping compare software
« Last post by app103 on April 07, 2013, 10:11 PM »
ToDo List is perfect.

Thank you...glad you like it and find it useful.

The lacking issue is referred to the desktop shopping compare tool.

Most definitely!

-yes, that could of course be a problem. However, I think we will have to agree that the insert date -hotkey was wrong in the first place; many programs are using Ctrl+D to delete, so now the hotkey function has become what it should have been from the beginning.

I agree that it makes more sense now, but if you don't read about the changes before upgrading...(oops!)

Still can't really get behind it 100% until it's possible to pay for the basic necessities with it, (rent, utilities, food) without having to convert it into traditional currency, first.

app103 I have adopted your soft ToDo List for my special purposes controlling lists.
Best Regards.

Seems in this sort of software a lacking issue.....

Well, this isn't exactly the thread for discussing that, since it's not a desktop shopping compare tool, but if you'd like to discuss my ToDo List with me, you could start a new thread, PM me, or contact me here and I'll be happy to discuss those issues.

I think is limited. Is not general. I don't see the desktop application for windows 7
 :-[

Pricegrabber? I don't remember seeing a desktop application for that, for any version of Windows.

Or did you go find an installer for Copernic Shopper? I hope you didn't waste time doing that. As I said, it doesn't work any more.  :(

Curt, I won't be upgrading anything for awhile. Not spending any of my money on anything that's not a necessity. My finances are still at the paranoia/panic level.  :(

I suggest everyone to look at the What's new page.
-conceptworld (April 07, 2013, 10:50 AM)

I'd hate to be the person that upgrades without taking that suggestion seriously and reading about what's new very carefully. Some interesting surprises in this version.

A few highlights:

Ctrl+L shortcut key for deleting note has been replaced by Ctrl+D.
Ctrl+D for inserting date has been changed to Ctrl+Alt+D.

A hotkey that used to insert the date now deletes your note.  :o

Many new features depend on a $30/year subscription based cloud service (free the first year) on a site that lacks a terms of service and privacy policy. (might want to fix that asap!) If you decide to upgrade to v8 just for these features and are either unprepared or unwilling to pay for this cloud based service, you will lose any features that depend on it in about a year.

My main unanswered question about this version: Is the taskbar button flashing issue on the reminder popup fixed (optional)? And the issue with it messing up the z-order of everything on the desktop? Because if those 2 issues are not fixed, I won't be upgrading, even when I have the money to do so. I really don't want to spend $20 to be constantly annoyed by these 2 issues till v9. I have already put up with them daily for almost 4 years, and they really do annoy me.

If some of the features removed were very important to you then please let us know. We might bring them back. Like we have added back titles feature last week.

The only two layouts I use are Playing Cards (my favorite) and Tiles. The Playing Cards one goes well with the titles feature, and the Tiles one does a bit more than the Stickers one does, in that it also makes all the notes uniform in size.

That's an interesting alternative to traditional forum software.

How searchbot friendly is it? Does your content get indexed well?

What about sites that rely on advertising for revenue? How easy would it be to insert that stuff? I am not just talking about an ad banner at the top/bottom/side of the page. It's possible with traditional forum software to insert ads to appear as posts within the discussion. (I am sure you have seen what looks like a member named "Google" making posts in forums that are Adsense ads, that try to be "related" to the discussion) Can something like that be done with this, yet?

Another thought: That "endless stream of content" approach, that just keeps loading more content when you reach the bottom of the page (till there isn't any more) usually creates problems with low end and older machines (and a lot of mobile devices) that don't have multiple gigs of RAM to waste on viewing a single web page. Eventually, if you scroll enough, it can cause your browser to freeze up, your entire system to crawl. It happens much faster when you don't have that much RAM. I have a gig of RAM on this machine and run into this problem quite frequently on Facebook and G+, if I scroll too far or leave the page open too long. Breaking the content into separate pages like a traditional forum does, kind of prevents that from happening.

Perhaps it might be possible to add what you want to this ahk script, that I requested awhile back to give OSD for mute status?

Or perhaps this one?

I have never found a replacement desktop application for Copernic Shopper that wasn't considered malware of some sort.

And if you manage to find an installer for the old Copernic Shopper application, the first thing it will do when it runs is update its search engines, which will result in a single entry whenever you search for a price or review, telling you it's no longer supported and then it refers you to the Pricegrabber site, as a replacement for their software.

UrlSnooper / Re: How can I get UrlSnooper to work with my dialup modem??
« Last post by app103 on April 06, 2013, 09:07 PM »
See, the problem isn't really getting URL Snooper to work with a dialup modem. It's getting WinPCap to work with a dialup modem. WinPCap isn't a DonationCoder application, so we are probably not the best people to "get a dialup modem and work on it". That would probably be best handled by the WinPCap people.

Did you try the demo here to see if it works on your dialup?

http://www.microolap...rk/tcpdump/download/

If it does, then mouser would like to know, because then he can do something to help you. He can add support for that network engine in URL Snooper.

So, try it and please let us know.

^Sorry! Misunderstood what you were saying.

Agree - bots that work like that are nothing new. What I meant was it was bound to happen to Bitcoin now that a speculative bubble is in full swing. Where I'm surprised is that it took this long for it to show up.

 ;D

But it didn't. As I said, it was discussed on Reddit about a year ago.

Note that "notable" doesn't mean "not seen before" - botcoining is hardly new.

There is an interview with a malware writer, from at least a year ago (somewhere on reddit), where he confessed that he made most of his income from botcoining. It was that interview that made me realize that doing it with my own hardware and electricity would probably be futile, not really any different than paying cash for them, and sent me on a search to find out if there was a more ethical way to get others to mine for me.

BTW, if anybody gets the bright idea I had and considers using Bitcoin Plus, forget it. You won't make anything. If you put their script on your site it will be flagged by google as a harmful site. If you link to your miner page it won't, but any BTC that gets mined for you, you'll never get. You can't cash out and the site owner doesn't answer emails. Seems like a big scam to get lots more people to mine BTC for the site owner, by making them think he will actually let them have what's theirs.

Developer's Corner / Fixing E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600
« Last post by app103 on April 05, 2013, 05:41 PM »
This is a fun read that I think many will enjoy, that will shed some light on why so many hated this classic game, and how it was a game that was actually ahead of its time.

And if you follow along with your hex editor and E.T. rom, you'll find out just how to fix it, to make it more fun.

If you're reading this page, chances are that you're already well aware that E.T. for the Atari 2600 is one of the most reviled games ever made. I never understood why. As a child, it was one of my favorite games. I still think it's a good game. Apparently, I'm not alone.

On this page I'm going to briefly explore why people hate E.T., and how the game can be fixed.

It's still too easy to fake it all, frame someone, then go after them, threaten to sue them, extort money from them. And I won't go into the details of how, lest some greedy lawyer or rep from one of the **AAs come across my post and get some bright idea of trying it.

Send me a PM if you really want to know how....I could give you a step-by-step how-to that would be quite easy to do and might make you wish you were an evil lawyer, when I am done.

I've seen a recommendation for the pen-sized RIL50 8 LED Mini Inspection Light.  It doesn't really look big enough to light a whole room, but good for working in small areas, like vehicle engine compartments.

I feel that pen lights are the most useful when they don't have anything like clips or magnets that could prevent you from holding them between your teeth, for hands free usage.  ;)

OK, but that still assumes they got the IP addresses from an actual investigation into copyright infringement, from instances of file sharing and not acquired through the logs of activity unrelated to file sharing or copyright infringement.

It takes into account that multiple people could have had access to an IP to use it for file sharing and questions the method they will use to find the correct person that had access to it and did the infringing.

It does not question the method used to even come up with an IP, in the first place. It does not ask them to prove an IP was involved in file sharing. It still just takes their word for it.

They still could have come from access logs related to a website on menopause or prostate cancer.

Did anybody stop to wonder where they originally got the IP addresses of the people they extorted?

What if they set up a website somewhere meant to appeal to a certain demographic, one most likely to suffer the greatest embarrassment, and logged the IP addresses of those that accessed it?

What kind of evidence do lawyers have to present to convince a judge to order an ISP to reveal the identity of the customer that had that IP address at the stated date & time?

Is it as simple as "We logged this IP address. See, here's the log"? Does anyone ever really question what the logs are really from?

How hard is it to fake "evidence" to make a person look guilty? Does anyone ever question the authenticity of the evidence?

Could one set up a site providing information on menopause or prostate cancer, log the IP addresses of those that access it, and then accuse them of copyright infringement, claiming they were sharing porn?

archive.org didn't do a very good job of preserving any of my earliest sites. All of the images are missing, which is a bad thing, considering they were all art related sites. :(

The oldest one (that I can remember the url) gave out hotlinkable background codes for use on Neopets.
