General Software Discussion / ToolWiz Time Machine anyone using it?
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 10, 2015, 10:12 AM »
I am reading a forum from when ToolWiz Time Machine was in beta.  The reaction of most of the people trying it was very positive.  Since my Restore Points almost never work I was thinking of using Time Machine in tandem with Macrium Reflect.

Also I think it may have embedded the ToolWiz Time Freeze functionality.  Sounds like a cool freeware.  But I am fishing for horror stories before jumping in the pool.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Comment Explorer 2.5.0.3
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 10, 2015, 08:55 AM »
CommentExplorer 2.5.0.3  Fixed Tooltip handling bug that occurred when successive files were commented.(i.e. the old Tooltip was removed but the new one was not displayed.)

I think the only practical way to use this utility is in Folder Mode with all the files in the folder commented.  That way one expects a comment to show up as each file is highlighted in Explorer.
Otherwise it feels too hit and miss.  I am going to try commenting as I download and making certain the new download goes into a commented subfolder of my download folder.

The more I mess with it the more I believe the function should be a file system intrinsic.  But as they say, it is better than nothing.  :)

So, as I said in another thread... Renegade is a prophet, not a cynic, and one day that will become obvious.

A cynic is just a prophet who employs a heuristic.   ;)

Uninstalled GOTD version and installed this one.  Appears to be no expiration.  Thanks for the heads-up.

Many of these say updating may reduce you to the free version or kill off your registration.  But it may be a gamble that the programmer doesn't want to add these checks just for giveaway versions.  If the program registration or install/uninstall "calls home" it might trigger.  But in most cases the free version still has useful functions.  So not the end of the world if you get kicked down to the ordinary free version.

Start Menu X Pro giveaway installed updates when I clicked "check for updates" but I noticed later it said my registration was cancelled.  So it can happen.  I don't have the energy anyway to create a whole bunch of shortcut categories to organize the Start Menu.  That was the main enhancement in the Pro version.  No biggie.  The free functionality still works fine.  :)

However, elementary maths and any calculator that is programmed to correctly obey the standard computational rules would give "7", so I reckoned that, from the context of IT, "7" would be the "correct" answer.

I can see MS missed the boat.  They should have named the successor to Vista

I don't see any way to get into Preferences if that is where this is controlled.  When I quote a post I get Quick Reply with no way to switch to the whole enchilada.

Edit:  Also I see no way to upload attachments or do much of anything.  If I click Quick Reply it just hides the window.  It does not give me an option to use the full BBS Edit thingie.

I thought that was the way it always was... at least that's the way I always used it.  In order to get to the full reply from there, you just click preview.

What is to preview if you cannot set an attachment?  No it definitely was possible to go directly into the full edit mode before.

No none of that. A left over formatted PC to install and trial 10 on it instead of getting another Mac or installing Linux (on the PC). It's fine if 10 has to be bought straight away but I just wondered because with 7 it seemed easier with more obvious links to download from.

If you ask around you might find someone who has some extra Tecnnet licenses for Windows 7 Pro lying around.  If you install Windows 7 Pro and activate it I am pretty sure then you can upgrade permanently to a free Windows 10 Pro.  Once you have the license key you should be able to download the Windows 7 Pro ISO image from MS.  A couple hundred bucks is a couple hundred bucks after all.  And many former Tachnet members have some licenses they will never use.

So if someone is on a Mac and wants to trial 10 without ever having 7 there is no trial?

Wouldn't you have to load it into a VM anyway?  I never hears of Windows running directly on Macs.

It looks like they may finally be making a movie from it.
I hope they don't - it's a pretty good book, no reason to screw it up with a bad teal-and-orange Hollywood crapover :)

Yeah.  Once in awhile they surprise me with a decent adaptation.  But not often enough.  :)

That reminds me when I saw Ayn Rand at Ford Hall Forum in Boston.  She took questions from the audience after her lecture.  The person asked about the status of the rights to Atlas Shrugged.  She answered "safely in my possession."  Of course that got a round of applause and cheers.  I watched the first third of the Shrugged movie trilogy.  I won't bother with the rest.  Other than money changing hands I did not see the point of making that flick.  A puppet show would have done a better job of conveying the ideas.  And I always hated puppet shows.  :)

The Forever War

It looks like they may finally be making a movie from it.

I am only 30 or 40 pages in.  But the writing style is fine and the plot does not lag.  It may bother some people that the future dates used in the story have gone by and we still don't have faster than light space travel.  It doesn't bother me.  It is a novel after all.  I don't see that the dates matter.

Edit:  But it may be part of the genius of H.G. Wells that his hero in The Time Machine traveled way into the future like 80,000 years A.D. or something like that.  It will take a long time for the critics to complain about the future date arriving and the predictions being off the mark.  Also Wells has the advantage of being dead.  Much easier to maintain a deaf ear with that strategy.  ;)

After a bit of research:
Gunsmoke (1958 I think) was another good one.

We used to all laugh when "Chester" made his appearance on Gunsmoke.  Played by Dennis Weaver who later had the McCloud series, Chester had a limp and would come limping into the scene as fast as he could hop skip and jump yelling "Mr. Dillon" and he would deliver some news etc..  We weren't laughing because Chester was hobbled but because Dennis Weaver played him over the top.  :)

A bit of trivia, Burt Reynolds was also on Gunsmoke.

Edit:  You mentioned 7 Samurai before.  I enjoyed the Clint Eastwood vehicle "A Fistful of Dollars" since it was a direct ripoff of Yojimbo.

Oddly enough, he could have gained an extra character  :P

I am lazy.  When Editpad Lite 7 said column 140 I quit.  Typical programmer's "off by one" error.  :)

With hundreds of apps it is way too much hassle to right click each tile to pin/unpin.  Anyone know of a free Windows 8.x start screen utility to manipulate such things easily?

At this point I got fed up and used a command line to remove them all.  But right clicking items to pin from All Apps does not work.  The tiles do not show up in the start screen.  I just want to have maybe a dozen there so they are easy to find.  Mostly desktop programs to be honest.  Stuff like ShadowExplorer,  Belarc Advisor etc..  The way it is now I have to hunt down the exe in the install folder and use Pin to Start from the Context Menu.  Arrrggghhh!!   Heh heh

I have never tried Twitter.  As soon as I heard about the max chars it sounded like a bunch of bumper sticker arguments were inevitable.  Not even sound bites, but sound bits.  Maybe if I had a reason to use it I would change my mind.  I tend to be too skeptical of new things.  Which reminds me, Mouser I do like the new format on here.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro [free]
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 02, 2015, 09:10 AM »
I found the reason for the speed difference of the Pro and Free versions.  The Free had VSS compatible mode disabled.  The Pro had it enabled.  When disabled the Pro analysis scan took less than 2 minutes.  The total defrag elapsed time was 5 minutes.

I have enabled VSS compatible mode in case defragging without it was messing up my Restore Points.
Edit:  In the notes it says VSS compatible tries to minimize the file movement to avoid messing up restore points etc..  So me thinks this is why I don't notice much of a speed up of disk i/o.  On the Free version I had this disabled so the optimization was evidently better.  If you do not use Restore Points then disabling this feature would yield better results in a shorter time.

I tried a restore point and it worked.  So the jury is still out.  If they work less than half the time I may just disable them and rely on Macrium Reflect incremental backup to safeguard my system.

mine doesn't "crash", but there are serious problems playing video
(Adobe is version 19)

I am still using the 18.x Flash Player.  It seems to work fairly well with 39.03 FF

I have the latest Slimjet chrome based browser.  It uses Pepper Flash and has the version you are supposed to use preloaded.  It is still on 18.x also.

All You Need is Love, a recent Shu Qi flick, is supposed to be at least mildly amusing.  It helps if you are a Shu Qi fan.  I can feel her soon moving into the category of former hot actress who plays the mother of the hot chick.  She may have a few more films in her as the lead.  But she has nothing left to prove so it's not realistic to expect much spark in the performances.
