Yeah, I'm very desktopApp-centric in my thinking, because that's all I've every done.  It would be better if the server did it all.  Is there some sort of free desktop app that I could use in conjunction with developing such a script, just to test the script and know that it will work once uploaded to a server?

What you should do is install a "LAMP" bundle on your local pc, and which will let you do and test all your web development initially on your desktop.

I don't know which package people currently recommend for windows, but one is XAMPP: http://www.apachefri...n/xampp-windows.html  which is probably a good option.

The most confusing part is actually getting setup and just getting started.  After that you will probably find web coding highly rewarding and invigorating.

It should allow the user to upload the small (20-50 byte) file containing their highscore to a designated /incoming/ directory on DC.  I would have another utility program that allows me to scan that particular online folder and download all such files currently residing their, opening each, retrieving username and highscore, and compiling an HTML file showing a listing of the game's users and their highscores in descending order.

:)

think about what you are saying.

You want client to be able to "upload a 20-50 byte FILE" and then you want them to be able to view other people's high scores by scanning a server folder, downloading all other highscore files, opening each, reading info, and then "compiling an HTML file" on the local pc and displaying it.

You need to shift your thinking.

You do not want this.

What you want is something 1000x simpler and more straightforward.

You want a server script that will accept two very simple http requests, the first will be submission of high score info, it could be as simple as accepting an http request of http:/kyrathaba.com/highscoresubmit?name=mouser&score=54  or you could use a post form method.

The server script will then simply ADD the users score to its high score database.

And then to VIEW high scores from the desktop application, you will simply make another web query to the server script of the form http://kyrathaba.com/highscores.php which will RETURN AN HTML FILE that the client can display to view high scores.  Users could even just view that web page directly.  (Or alternatively return a response with some raw data from the database for you to format and display).

You need to stop thinking about doing this purely from the desktop application using protocols like ftp.  That way lies madness.

You need to wrap your head around web coding so that you have a better taste for what things you should be doing server-side vs. desktop client side.  Go read a few pages about web coding (php, perl, whatever) and using database stuff on the server, etc.  You will find it is both easy, fun, and liberating.
13503
I don't know how to write server-side scripts.

kyrathaba, you're a fast learner and, while i'm not suggesting you learn how to write server scripts for this project, i would suggest that you might find it very enjoyable to learn a little bit of php, just as a change of pace from desktop application coding.  it would also give you a feel for what kinds of things you can do with server side coding.

why not get yourself a book and start the php programming school assignments here.

To follow up on ham's point -- you'd be insane to try to save high scores by embedding ftp login credentials in your public app and using ftp protocol to upload user high scores.  That's just not the way it's done.

If you want to save high scores the solution is to write a server based script (php, python, perl, dot net on the server, whatever), that responds to http queries from client application over the web, like any other web-based application, and updates the server database, etc.

NEW GUIDELINES MAY 13, 2011 :

Thinking a bit about the Found Deals and Discounts Section and how we might optimize it a bit.  I know the info here on new discounts is very useful to some, I'm just trying to make it a little more manageable.

I think in order to better organize it and make it easier for people to find stuff long term, posters should try to post the the daily/weekly deal-site announcements either:
  • In a single thread for the giveaway site (giveaway of the day thread for example)
  • Or in a thread collecting all discounts past and future for a given product.

So maybe we can start a few threads for the big daily giveaway sites, and when a new giveaway is announced that people think would be of interest, EITHER make a new post on that thread, or search for an existing thread on the application being given away, and post the latest giveaway on that.

And maybe we can find someone willing to do a little moderation of this section in their free time to prune out some of the older posts that are no longer relevant.

"Little Voice Commander"

I like that one.

I liked some of the others too, but many, like BabyVox, came up with existing products.
13507
i can't confirm this specific example but i can confirm the general issue of launching shortcuts on x64 OS that point to the system32 directory is a known issue and on my todo list to fix.

babybabble is a good name but too many hits on google -- should be a name that is a bit more unique.

I have my own share of anger at Microsoft for lots of things they do that I'm not happy with.

But I honestly wonder if in 10 or 20 years we are going to look back at the times we are living in now and lament the death of microsoft and the death of the good old days when software companies actually made products and sold those products to users.

Seems like we are headed into an age where companies are going to be trying to find increasingly convoluted and complicated schemes to extract money from us without actually charging us directly for the products we use.  And I'm not looking forward to it.

I should note that while this toy app is not suitable for teaching your kids how to pronounce words, it is very useful for preparing them at an early age for the frustrations of using a Speech Recognition system.
13512
I want to give a little teaser for a new toy app i've been working on for very young kids who are just learning to start to speak.

It's based on my MultiPhotoQuotes engine.

Tentatively called "VoicePics", this program runs full screen (across multiple monitors if present) and listens for a child to speak or press a key.

If the program detects something being spoken, it finds the best match for a word it has photos for, and displays some random photos for that word, as well as the word text.
If a key on the keyboard is pressed, a word beginning with the pressed key is displayed, along with some photos for that word.

Users can add their own photos easily, so you can customize it with pictures of mom, dad, sister, brother, dog, cat, house, etc.  It will scan labeled photos on startup and add those words to its vocabulary.

It uses the microsoft speech recognition engine, which is ok but not ideal.  I wouldn't expect to be able to use this to teach any kid how to pronounce words -- it's more to encourage very young kids to babble and give them the experience of having what they speak affect what it shown in a semi-consistent manner.

If anyone has any kids of an appropriate age, message me and i'll give you a link to a beta version.

I hope people will help by making some additional image packs for the program from royalty free photo sources.

I need suggestions for an official name for this -- the working title is "VoicePics" but i think it needs a better one.

im fairly sure this is a bug that crops up because of the approximate way smf forums handled the markunread feature with such a large number of posts.  i think i remember seeing some discussion of it on the smf community forums.  see if you can find a thread discussing it that might have some clues.

Hi Dave, I'm glad you like the program, and thanks for asking about the license!

If you are using more than a couple of licenses then we do request that you purchase a commercial site license.

Email me at [email protected] and I can help you with that.

Are you using the latest URL Snooper (2.29.01)?
Have you tried setting URL Snooper to run as administrator?
What network adapter hardware do you have installed in your computer?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Quickfield how-to request
« Last post by mouser on May 09, 2011, 03:09 PM »
I just spent a few minutes staring at the help file trying to figure out what i had in mind.

I think the idea was that normally you set the template pattern for your filename which might include the quickfield, like "%quickfield% Screenshot - %datetime%"

This says that when saving a new file, if you type "test" into the quickfield, the file will be named "test Screenshot - 5/9/11"

BUT if you are strange you could do it the other way, and put something generic in the default new filename template like "Screenshot - %datetime%" and then in your quickfield customize this by saying something like "test %t%" which gives you filename of "test Screenshot - 5/9/11" or "%t% test" which would give you filename "Screenshot - 5/9/11 test".

So you put %t% in your quickfield to replace the default new file name template into your quickfield at a specific location and then save the file.

BUT having said that, it's clear the best advice is to ignore this feature completely, as it's strange and has no obvious use.

try this (just the exe, overwrite existing):

see if it improves it at all -- it's a shot in the dark so i wouldn't count on it.

i'm having trouble reproducing so let me ask some questions

  • if you keep hiding and showing farr window, does it shrink over time as you do this?
  • does it shrink 1 pixel each time you launch and exit farr? or does something else seem to trigger the shrinking?
  • what skin are you using?
