Living Room / Re: Note taking Methods and Software
« Last post by rjbull on March 06, 2011, 03:17 PM »
mahesh2k, are you aware of DC's earlier mega-thread General brainstorming for Note-taking software, started by superboyac?  34 pages and counting.
1352
Thread seems ok to me as it is -- unless a thread is meant to serve as a permanent reference for something, i don't think its so bad when it drifts around.

Oblivion was trying CHS because he'd had an apparent problem with ArsClip, so I pursued the ArsClip bit.  Which seemed rude given that this is a thread about requests for your CHS, but I like ArsClip too, and therefore had an "etiquette problem."

Do you think it's worth splitting some posts off unto their own threads?

For appropriate posts, perhaps.  Like you I don't see a general rule, but hope that moderators will make whatever judgement call seems necessary.
1353
mouser, what's the best way to answer like I did, but avoid going off topic in the thread?  It doesn't always seem appropriate to start a new threadlet, but I'd rather keep things in the open than moving everything to PM.
1354
Oh dear. Same here, thoughout. That means the Gremlins are doing it. I HATE that.

...hang on, Jarte does clipboard monitoring. I wonder if it's that that's interfering... but then, it'd probably cause CHS to have problems, and it doesn't.

Depending on your OS, maybe you had a Clipboard Chain Break?  Both ArsClip and CHS have ways of detecting that.  E.g., ArsClip Web Help:
Automatic clipboard chain break detection

UPDATE: Vista users can and should disable chain break detection, since
breaks are no longer present on the Vista operating system.

Unfortunately, any program can mess up the "clipboard chain", because it is
left up to the program to correctly handle clipboard messages. ArsClip has
a workaround for this. It checks the contents of the clipboard every 1
minute to make sure that it was automatically notified of the current items
arrival. If it wasn't, it will display an error message, and then
transparently fix any future problems this session without bugging you.
It's possible that either ArsClip or CHS had fixed things when you tried again.

People want something that can knit, bake a good rice pudding and cycle up the curtains as well as put words on paper, it seems.

Souns like you're British  ;)  If you're old enough to remember Fidonet, the standing joke about Terminate was the forthcoming dishwasher interface...

(1989 might have been my first DTP package. That makes me feel suddenly very old.)

So you are old enough  :D  Remember GEM?  :)

I still want to make CHS work better for me, because I'm arrogant enough to believe that if it works better for me, it'll work better for everyone else too.

Welcome to the Moderately Honourable Brotherhood of Beta Testers, Suggestion Makers and Software Pesterers  :)

Going back to
longish words I knew I was going to be typing repeatedly -- and set a shortcut up to bring up favourites to make them easier to get at quickly.

If you don't want to use one of the text expanders, you might like to look at two freeware hotkey programs, HotKeyz and HotKeyP.  Both allow you to set just one hotkey which will pop up a menu of texts, or in HotKeyz case, other things as well.  The images are first, HotKeyP, and second, HotKeyz.

Humph.  Going too far off topic  :(  Apologies, mouser.

I've now tried MemPad and DateReminder, but they just not give me the right feeling about them that I can safely distribute them in my team. It's a bit vulnerable that all data is stored in a text(like) file.

MemPad has automatic backups, but only one level.  You could set up a scheduler to periodically zip them up and copy to a server, but that's more work...  I'm assuming that keys would be stored in an encrypted file.  Not sure about vulnerability there as the file is only clear when it's unencrypted.  But, I wish MemPad would automatically close encrypted files like KeePass does.

a set of repeating Outlook appointments for our team-lead. These appointments have to be manually maintained, [...] biggest disadvantage is that the reminders only pop-up at the calendar of the person(s) that scheduled the reminders, not from a central calendar (we have a team-mailbox and -calendar in our Exchange server, never got group-notifications working).
If you already have Exchange and Outlook, management would probably prefer that you use them.  I wondered about Rainlendar because:
Shared & 3rd Party Calendars

With Rainlendar Pro you can subscribe to online calendars and share your events with other computers. You can also see and edit your Outlook appointments and tasks in Rainlendar (Windows only).
but for Outlook synchronization you need the Pro version, which is cheap, but not free.  Also check the FAQ on memory usage for Outlook.

If both of Horst Schaeffer's MemPad and DateReminder utilities could be combined

I suggested that once, but Horst pointed out that you couldn't rely on Reminder pointing to a particular page in MemPad because the page in question might have been moved in the meantime.  So, the two programs would have to be combined at a deeper level.  Perhaps you could suggest that  :)  I used to use JBLab Secure Notes (payware: this is the original link but it's now dead) which was a small two-pane PIM with reminders built into it, plus other useful features, but I abandoned it in favour of MemPad because there was no development and a point came when it started to be difficult to transfer data out of it into anything else.  You could consider AllMyNotes Organizer, also payware.  I haven't tried it, but reminders are mentioned in the Help index.
How to... assign Alarms?
[...]
Multiple alarm objects can be inserted to the Note and placed at any text position.

Each alarm can be single-date event, or repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or annually. Also interval between alarms, and alarm end date (for repeating alarms) can be set. [...]
The author of AllMyNotes Organizer occasionally posts on DC, and has posted links for discounts in the past.

reminders, 1 or 2 months before a license is about to expire

You can set that in Reminder, but I'm not sure you can trigger anything to run automatically.  You can launch things, but only by an extra, manual, action.

I use an encrypted file in Horst Schaeffer's MemPad.  It's a small, free, portable, two-pane organiser.  Useful for keeping dated copies of e-mails relating to licence key purchase, as well as the keys themselves.  Doesn't do automatic field-filling, of course, but I don't need that for license keys anyway.

[ArsClip] complained, with everything I tried, that it couldn't work out where to paste the text. (Can't remember the exact error, but it offers to -- and does -- paste to the clipboard, it just can't find the window to paste into.
[...]
I assume this is an issue with later versions of Windows than XP, as an XP machine I've used ArsClip on for ages -- well, probably a couple of years, now -- has never given me a problem. The machine I was using for this is a Vista box, and I have a Netbook with Win7 Starter that has similar issues.

Strange.  Just for you  ;)  I updated my USB stick(s) from Jarte 3.4 portable to 4.3 portable.  ArsClip worked fine with both versions, at least with plain text, I haven't tried again with RTF.  I'm using the latest ArsClip Beta, 3.1.5 build 4031, which is on Joe's Web site as acv315-t9.zip.  OS is Vista Home Premium.

[Jarte]'s the one. Small, lightweight, fast and effective.

I did my usual thing with this -- as with most free software I use -- although I didn't need (and don't use) the extra features, I bought the payware version anyway. Gotta keep the authors of good software in business, even if it's only in a small way!

Good for you!  I don't use word processors much, mostly editors.  But on the face of it, it's hard to see why it's worth paying more for an RTF WP.  PolyEdit is nice, but development is glacially slow.

If you're doing what I think you're doing, you might be better off with a dedicated text expander/completer/corrector.

I tried Phraseexpress a couple of years back -- I either didn't get on with it or it didn't work in a way I found useful, can't recall now. Perhaps I should take another look.

But I have become a big fan of portable apps. Anything like that, I want my clipboard to be able to travel with me.

All those I mentioned have portable versions  :)

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Clipboard Help+Spell - Top Priority Requests for 2011
« Last post by rjbull on February 26, 2011, 03:03 PM »
My clipboard manager of choice has always been ArsClip. However, it won't play ball with the text editors I've tried to use for the work I've been doing -- Jarte primarily, but I'd have used OpenOffice or anything else that could do quick editing and basic formatting.

What doesn't work with ArsClip?  It's always worked OK for me on editors.  Just had a very quick check with an older version of Jarte free; looks like plain text is pasted OK, but RTF might not be.  Had mixed results doing the same thing with Softmaker Textmaker, where font effects appeared to be preserved, but size wasn't.

CHS has worked nicely with Jarte (if you haven't, try it -- it's a wrapper for WordPad, apparently, but is a very decent free rtf editor)

I think Jarte is an extended version that uses the WordPad engine, that is, more features, and more still in the payware version.

I set a few favourites -- longish words I knew I was going to be typing repeatedly -- and set a shortcut up to bring up favourites to make them easier to get at quickly.

If you're doing what I think you're doing, you might be better off with a dedicated text expander/completer/corrector.  I currently use Typing Assistant (payware).  The one most often recommended is Phrase Express, which has both free-for-personal-use and payware versions.  Here on DC, timns is developing Auspex, see the Timns Apps sub-board.  There are others too, mentioned in several DC threads.

Another thought: if you have repetitive pasting of boilerplate clips to do, you might want to look at another of mouser's programs, The Form Letter Machine.

so it is essential to be able to somehow prevent the app from thinking that the webpage has changed every time it connects to it

WebSite-Watcher has filters to ignore date changes, for example, and keyword filters to look for things like version number changes.

it is essential to be able to detect changes in areas like the text in a drop down menu

Don't know about that.

The feature to automatically filter a clip depending on the contents (e.g., the text strings) into a Virtual Folder in CHS, using the appropriate SQL, is either not enabled in CHS at present, or is too obscure for me to understand.

You might want to look at ClipMagic (freeware):
   [...]
    * Categorise/Organise your clips. Create rules/filters for incoming clips.
      [...]
    * Quickly access the source web page of internet clips.

Two features that have been requested for CHS.  I used ClipMagic a bit, but ended up preferring ArsClip and CHS, often used in tandem.  But, ClipMagic does have those features, if they're what you want.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Windows Shortcut transformation
« Last post by rjbull on February 23, 2011, 11:07 AM »
Not sure it's relevant, but just noticed this in TinyApps Blog:

Replace dupes with hard links or shortcuts

    * CloneSpy: GUI dedupe utility that can (among other things) replace duplicate files with shortcuts or hard links.
    * Dupemerge: CLI utility that searches for identical files on a logical drive and creates hard links among those files. (via Anthony Frazier)
    * Duplicate File Hard Linker (DFHL): Open source CLI tool that replaces duplicate files with hard links. Byte-per-byte comparison ensures only identical files are hard linked.
    * Finddupe: Open source CLI tool for detecting, deleting, or hard linking duplicate files. Can also list all hardlinked files on a given volume (similar to Microsoft's Hlscan.exe). Finddupe computes a hash based on the first 32k of a file, only checking entire file if there is a match.

This KB article explains hard links:

A hard link is a folder entry for a file regardless of where the actual file data exists on that volume. Every file is considered to have at least one hard link. On NTFS volumes, each file can have multiple hard links; therefore, a single file can be displayed in many folders (or even in the same folder with different names). Because all of the links reference the same file, programs can open any of the links and modify the file. A file is deleted from the file system only after all of the links to it have been deleted. After you create a hard link, programs can use the link like any other file name. Note that Windows Explorer and a command prompt will show all linked files as being the same size, even though they all share the same data and do not actually use that amount of disk space.

This last bit can be confusing. Let's say you've got a folder with three duplicate files of 10MB each. After replacing the dupes with hard links, the folder size is still reported as 30MB by Windows Explorer and cmd.exe. However, the "Used space" reported by Windows Explorer for the volume will have decreased by 20MB.

I don't know what the fuss was about; FlashFolder is almost nothing. FileBox eXtender is still way ahead, even no longer supported

Does it fully work on Vista and Win7?  And, does it have the wonderful feature of being able to change a dialog to whatever directory Total Commander is pointing to?  Direct Folders can do both TC and Directory Opus; I know you could add file managers ad nauseam, but those, XYplorer and xplorer² would probably cover most DC users.

I just installed Direct Folders because it's one of the few that seem under active development, basic features are free for personal use, and the Click Switch feature works with Total Commander very nicely.  On the other hand the current version seems too mouse-centric for my taste (I prefer keyboard-centric), and I seem to remember at least one mention on DC that DF spikes the CPU sometimes.  A couple of the pay-only features look very nice:
* Set default folder for any application.
* Rebound to the last used file in that folder.

I'll be interested to see if there's a new Vista/7-compatible version of FlashFolder (which I never tried), but I'm not holding my breath...

Please, what is or are the best dialog box enhancer/extender(s) on recent versions of Windows?

The excellent DonationCoder Review: Best Open/Save Dialog Box Extenders was written in 2005 and last updated in October 2006.  Many things have changed since then, in particular, new versions of Windows; XP has been replaced by Vista (I have 32-bit Vista) and Vista itself replaced by Win 7.  Some of the programs mentioned in the review have been updated while some seem to have been more or less abandoned.  New ones may have appeared; the author of AcFolders even announced his program here and said that he had taken note of the DC review in making it in AcFolders - new file-open dialog box extender, but it has only one other brief mention on DC that I can see, in Any dialog extenders (like FileBox Extender) for 64-bit Win 7?.  Other DC threads on dialog box extenders include:

I run Listary, the Pro version which has favourite folders, but its main focus is on improved searching through file lists, and it doesn't have a recent folders list.  Development might have stalled, too.  I could go back to PowerPro, but it's not as happy on Vista (at least with UAC On) as it was on XP, and the thought of wrestling with its configuration again is daunting.  Further, neither Listary nor PowerPro support Total Commander like some of the others do, notably Direct Folders.

As I'm going round in circles, I'll repeat the first line: Please, what is or are the best dialog box enhancer/extender(s) on recent versions of Windows?

I'd be interested to know if anyone has tried Treeline.  Features list includes, amongst much else:
    * Stores almost any type of information, including plain text, HTML, numbers, dates, times, booleans, URLs, etc.
    * The tree structure helps keep things organized.
    * Each node can have several fields that form a mini-database.
    * Several node types, with different sets of fields, can be included in one file.
    * The node format, including fields, output lines and tree-view icon, can be defined for each node type.
[...]
    * TreeLine files are XML by default, but there are options for automatically compressing or encrypting the files.
[...]
    * File Import and Export The data can be exported to HTML.
    * An XSLT file can be exported to work with the XML TreeLine files.
    * Tab-delimited tables and tab-indented text files can be imported and exported. Plain text files and Treepad files can be imported.
    * Mozilla and XBEL format bookmark files can be imported and exported.
    * Generic XML files can be imported and exported, allowing TreeLine to function as a crude XML editor.
    * ODF text documents can be imported and exported as outlines.
    * Batch file conversions can be done from a command line interface.

So, I've managed to purchase a Panasonic Toughbook W8 for around $450.  I'm going to use that as my alarm clock!  ;D
The way I feel about alarm clocks, it had better be tough

You might take a look at Kirby Alarm Pro (or maybe Lite, see the purchase page).  You can use it as a scheduler as well then.
   Run a program automatically
   Pop up a note
   Play a sound
   Send e-mails automatically
Transfer a file by FTP (pro version only)
Backup files and folders (pro version only)
   Say the time
   Say the message
Handy To Do List (with query facilities)
   Plus loads more!

Hmmm...  not sure about mp3 from that.
