General Software Discussion / Re: Organize desktop icons and more...
« Last post by J-Mac on September 14, 2009, 02:08 AM »
I actually have Impulse installed on my desktop, as I also have a subscription to Stardock's Object Desktop. However I uninstalled Fences on my notebook computer rather than install Impulse there.

Installing the Fences update on my desktop caused Impulse to reinstall over itself; they apparently did not include the ability to check and see if it is already installed!

Jim

Strange, because I'm updating my Stardock programmes all the time and Impulse just updates itself too without 'reinstalling'?

Same here for all else. But when I installed the latest Fences beta it reinstalled Impulse too.

General Software Discussion / Re: Dying technologies: do you still use a printer much?
« Last post by J-Mac on September 13, 2009, 08:54 PM »
If I could rely on the paper feeder not breaking, I would be printing much more and who knows, I might replace my old HP with a fancier new model. But these things *will* break, it's a foregone conclusion. I don't expect they've gotten any better, now that hardware is made so cheaply.

I have to say that my Canon PIXMA MP 830 is now over three years old - with extremely heavy usage - and going very strong. I commented above that Canon did not make a comparable printer anymore but their purported latest replacement for my model - the MX 860 - is the closest. And since my last post above I ordered one from Amazon.   :-[  Why? On sale for $124....

I compared the ink cartridge capacities and prices for the MP 830 and MX 860 and then analyzed that against my annual ink usage. The new printer's ink cartridges will cost me almost exactly twice annually what the old printer's ink cost me. Yikes! But I couldn't find a quality alternative for my MP 830 unfortunately. So for now I will continue to use the MP 830 till it dies and keep the MX 860 in reserve. BTW the MX 860 can be networked wirelessly while my current printer is attached to my network through my desktop PC, which means that on the occasions when my desktop crashes no one can print until I get it restarted.

Unfortunately the 0.96 beta ended early - or so Stardock claims. It was supposed to be in force till November 1 but about a week or so ago it started throwing a popup stating the beta was over and you had to download and install the 0.99 beta. I personally think it was an intentional mistake. Why, you ask? Because the 0.99 beta version automatically installs Stardock's Impulse installer and auto-updating software. Impulse is a fairly heavy piece of software, runs all the time, is setup in your Startup config on Windows boxes, and it alerts you to their new games. Bah!

I have licenses for TC (5+ years now), DOpus, and XYplorer Lifetime. I use DOpus the most, have been trying XYplorer more and more since they started with the dual pane, and of course I still use TC for a number of features that I could probably get the others to do but it's quicker to fire up TC and just do it.

DOpus IS expensive but one thing I like is that they don't release an "upgrade" every year just because. And so many developers do just that. DOpus only releases an upgrade when there is a real reason to do so. I do like that!

Oh yeah! Sir "Prints-a-Lot" here!

I can't sit at the computer for more than about 30 minutes at a time, max, so I must print a lot of documents for reading later. I have to print virtually ALL PDF manuals for software I use.

I also do a good bit of digital photo editing and I still do print a fair number of photos on Canon Photo Pro paper. My 3+ year old Canon MP-830 has been a stalwart for me. Sadly Canon doesn't offer anything like it anymore.

Hi Wicked and welcome to DonationCoder!

I'm not a coder so I can't help you with this but it seems simple enough. Possibly something that could be done with a script - I'm thinking a GreaseMonkey script. I know at times I am looking for a particular member in a forum and the forum software only allows me to go four or five pages forward at a time via its links. And that is way too little if I am trying to get to the M's and there are 800 pages! I usually do as you said - highlight and change that number in the address bar. And in Firefox each time I do that it throws it to a new tab - lotsa tabs!

Someone with scripting knowledge will hopefully stop by soon.

If you are looking for note taking software for studying have you considered Wiznotes?

Eli Cohen
Wiznotes

Hi Eli and welcome to DonationCoder! So Wiznotes is your creation? It looks interesting. I like the graphics - large icons with a kind of cartoon look to them! Appears to be geared almost exclusively toward students. (Correct me if I'm wrong!). Not inexpensive, though.

Maybe someone here will take a closer look and review it.

Thank you.

Jim

General Software Discussion / Re: Timeline Software
« Last post by J-Mac on August 25, 2009, 01:52 AM »
Ampa,

At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, I’m the Author of the Timeline Studio’s timeline software as mentioned by Hefty Hippie.
Although this was not our primary goal when we developed our software, it does make a pretty good job of the type of documentation you’ve described.
There is a example of Barack Obama’s lifeline on our website it might be worth a look and / or downloading the example file.
The file is much richer in terms of content than the web images. (You will also need the software as we do use proprietary file formats).

http://www.timelines...meline-examples.html

The main advantage of using our software for this type of task is that you can create a multi-layered timeline with different Views for the different aspects of your life, e.g., you can have a overall summary and then in-depth views of education, career, family, holidays etc

I hope this has been of help and not too much of a sale push.

Very nice, Sirlimpalot. Looks interesting. I wonder what the primary usage is for timeline software: Business planning? Personal use, like family history research? I'll be taking a serious look at it - for the latter reason here.

Thanks for the nice intro!

But not all of those kiddies have the patience to memorize ASCII or fire up charmap!

You are right; I forgot that an American keyboard is different from mine. On my Danish keyboard the "¨" is the last bütton before "Enter"!

Unfortunately I am guilty of the same. Unless I have the ASCII code for the character memorized it just gets the letter typed without anything added to modify it. Very much a PITA to type those characters regularly on a standard US keyboard.

hey! I thought all dc members loved finding obscure little programmes to make this kind of thing easier!

I have to say I love having a german keyboard - I have three extra characters (üöä) on the right-hand side that I can combine with the Control key for shortcuts - especially handy for a left-handed-mouser-mouse-user (only one mouser around here I guess)

You know, I never even looked for such a utility - mainly because I rarely correspond with people who speak languages that use such characters. No excuse, I guess. It would be good to have such an app. I'll go check out the links I see posted now.   8)

Thanks!

People who seem to think that by turning on my blinker I am telling them to "Speed up"

ARGH!!!!!!!!!    :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

Oops, I forgot to mention to Josh - if anyone's trying to switch lanes, it's a violation to keep them from doing so.
At least in California.

SO many people do this that I believe it is actually unintentional with some folks. It's as if when some people realize that someone else is passing them, they think, "Oh, I must have slowed down too much... let me pick up the pace." It just happens with far too many people to be spiteful. Or maybe I am giving too much credit where it ain't due?

Jim

I only see this when I change lanes to get away from them. If they speed up while you're clearly trying to go in front of them, then they're not only rude, but they're creating a major safety hazard.

I seem to encounter this when most often when I'm trying to get out of an 'exit only' lane on the freeway.
After having been forced off my path a couple of times, I refuse to be bullied on the freeway. If there are too many cars behind the offending driver for me to wait & get in behind him/her, I'll signal, give them a few seconds, then slowly start to get over. They can move it or lose it. I know this is dangerous, but golly, go figure - they always manage to find it in their hearts to let me in.  ;)

I run as many errands as possible at night. It's just too frustrating here in the daytime; there's an idiot in every lane. It's virtually impossible to escape them. At least at night, you can go around them. The Silicon Valley has, without a doubt, the most unaware, rude, reckless and in general, unskilled drivers in the country. Period.

Sarah, I think - well, I am almost certain - that I was a much more aggressive driver when I was younger. Now? Not so aggressive anymore. Lost my nerve? I don't think so. It is just that nowadays when I try to remember what I was in such a hurry about years ago, I realize that most of the time I wasn't really in a hurry at all. But when I was younger any other driver's inconsiderate or rude action toward me was taken as a challenge; a gauntlet thrown toward me, so to speak.

What an ass I was! I'm sure that I acted quite recklessly and just plain stupid, putting myself and others at risk by driving "competitively" for no other reason than pure pseudo-macho bulls***.

Hopefully we all get away from that kind of goofiness in time.  :)

The "free" version of Linkman uses (or at least DID use - I don't know if it still does now) the InstallQ installer and Freeze.net for what the developer of Linkman seemed to think was only showing some adverts during the install process and nothing else. I posted some of the language in InstallQ's T&C's and Freeze.net's so-called Privacy Policy. Actually very funny if it weren't so outrageous. Here's the link to that post:

Hey - what law us that?  I might have to start writin' some tickets!

Probably referring to the Uniform Vehicle Code and/or "Keep Right" laws of most states. Here's a link showing all states' Keep Right laws:  http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html

It really annoys me (though not "to no end") when a pleasant and joyous feeling like being gay is interpreted as, being a homosexual!

Unfortunately Curt, that is all 'gay' means, anymore, in the US, at least in modern usage. There is no more, 'he was happy and gay today'!

How true! There's an annoyance right there: Losing common words to specific appropriated meanings. I can understand people not preferring the word "homosexual" as it has picked up bad connotations to the point of being a slur in some cases. In that respect I can certainly understand the desire to avoid that word, and I guess that the only apparent solution is to appropriate another, less offensive sounding word to replace it with. However it then becomes just as uncomfortable for most folks to use such words in their original meaning and context. E.g., most people don't use the word "gay" anymore in any other sense than as it refers to sexual preference.

Unfortunately you will have a very difficult time finding high school students who will take the part of Maria in "West Side Story" if they have to sing "I'm So Pretty"! Actually I just discovered that the original words for the stage version, "I'm so pretty and witty and gay" were changed to "I'm so pretty and witty and bright" in the movie version, and most modern presentations of the musical play now use the "bright" version in an attempt to be "PC"... Yikes!

I took a closer look at the GM userscript and suddenly noticed that it was by default active on all sites. I changed that to only work on Snopes plus I will add others only if I can't select text. That seems to be allowing the thumbnail switching at other sites again.

I don't think your NoScript is fully disabled. Snopes uses a script to prevent highlighting text and you can see it in the page source there, as I have quoted below:

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var omitformtags=["input", "textarea", "select"]
omitformtags=omitformtags.join("|")
function disableselect(e){
if (omitformtags.indexOf(e.target.tagName.toLowerCase())==-1)
return false
}
function reEnable(){
return true
}
if (typeof document.onselectstart!="undefined")
document.onselectstart=new Function ("return false")
else{
document.onmousedown=disableselect
document.onmouseup=reEnable
}
-->
</script>

So you still must have something blocking that script. Are you perhaps getting a cached page on which NoScript already disabled that script?
