Sheesh, what the heck is happening??
It's 2012. THE END OF THE WORLD MAN!
Please...lol.
I gotta say, something has happened the last 2-4 years.  i don't know what, but it's all tied to this.  Feels like the golden age of information is ending and we're about to enter some kind backwards mode with all this for a while until everyone stops freaking out and starts thinking clearly.

Sheesh, what the heck is happening??  Look at the events lately:
Dotcom saga
Mcafee saga

I usually go for a walk rather than snooze, but it often does help taking a few steps back and letting your mind flow freely.

+1! Waking almost always works the charm for me.

That and/or 20 minutes listening to Bach, Teleman, or Gregorian Chant.

Total brain reset.
mmm...yes, speaking of which, this one tends to do the trick for me:

If no one claims him in the next 24 hours, send him to me and ill board him and feed him until someone requests the next visit.
Oh man, send him over.  I have plans...

superboy, do you ever visit any of those "click LIKE to watch this {movie, picture, whatever}" facebook sites? Prime way to get malware on your box. Had to clean up two of my brothers' PCs last weekend, I'm pretty sure that's how they got crap on their system (neither of them download warez, and at least the youngest of them doesn't watch pr0n). The malware had even disabled AdBlockPlus and Ghostery both in Chrome and FireFox.

Attacks can also happen totally automated from drive-by attacks, of course, and you don't even need to visit seedy sites, a single compromised banner-ad server is enough. AdBlockPlus+NoScript+Ghostery ftw... oh, and not having Java, Flash or AdobePDF plugins in your browser.
It's possible, I don't know.  Just never happened before.  I use ad muncher, ad block, MSE.  I don't know if I can get away with no java or flash...wouldn't you have a difficult time seeing multimedia on the websites?

Thanks TP, I'll investigate.  Speaking of which, now you're doing it to me also?!  Cmon man, I thought we were friends!  ;D

General Software Discussion / Say what?! FCC opening up spectrum?

FCC may open some spectrum for "small cell" usage.  It's not clear what that means, but anything in this direction is quite exciting.  Of course, the mobile carriers are going to bitch about it.  Hopefully, this is a step in the nice direction of personal independence and the human progress and ingenuity.  Sorry to be over-dramatic, but that's basically what it means.

I noticed recently that I've been getting these "coupondropdown" ads every once in a while, like so:
Screenshot - 12_12_2012 , 6_36_36 PM.png

Before I try to blast with all the tools, I was wondering if this was built into the new firefox versions?  Because I normally never get any ads or anything, and the only changes lately have been the firefox updates.  I see them in wikipedia occasionally as well.

Seriously, though...what's the deal with Bugs Bunny and the "left turn at Albuquerque" running gag?  I've never been able to get this out of my head since I was a kid.  It's literally the only reason why I even know the name of the city.   ;D

I remember seeing a documentary about the Warner Brothers many years ago. It was explained that Bugs Bunny's wrong turn in Albuquerque was a reference to an actual confusing junction in Albuquerque (probably where I-25 and I-40 meet).

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?cou

Some of Chuck Jones' colleagues got lost commuting from the Southeast US to Hollywood and ended up lost out in the New Mexico boonies. The experience was memorable enough to create an inside joke that ultimately became the means by which Bugs Bunny ended up in the middle of nowhere. The joke was that Bugs was actually trying to get to Hollywood but got diverted in Albuquerque.

Just for fun:

I have zero facts for what I'm about to say...

I'd only use something like this as a last resort or on a device I cared nothing about if it exploded or got stolen tomorrow morning.  For anything more important than that, I'd buy additional storage before doing anything like this.  I also avoid compression as much as practically possible.  But I am admittedly more than slightly paranoid about such things.

Living Room / Re: Well, I got it: Nokia Lumia 920, Windows 8
« Last post by superboyac on December 09, 2012, 09:47 PM »
There haven't been any WP8 updates yet, just Nokia updates as far as I can tell. Maybe those helped battery life, though... my observation has been that out of the box the battery indicator is insane. My phone would be 100% for hours, then suddenly much less. After a week or so it became sane and battery life is perfectly acceptable (good even) for an often used smart phone.

I do have a couple complaints -- the hole for the speaker (where your ear goes for the calls) isn't sealed, apparently. There's a bunch of dust in my front facing camera's cavity.  I don't think it has any effect on the picture (yet) but given time, I'm sure it will. It kind of bugs me. On the bright side I absolutely never (ever) use the front facing camera, so my annoyance is more on principle.

My other issue is the proximity censor -- it's way too sensitive. I've found that more often than not, once I'm on a call I cannot get the screen to stay on. That makes it really tough (impossible) to use the keypad when dealing with an automated system. I don't know if that's the result of dust getting in the sensor area or if it's a software thing.  I haven't really tested it since the last updates from Nokia, so it's possible it's been fixed... rather than test it, I'm just going to sit here and be hopeful. Sure beats being disappointed. :)
I think your description of the battery life is accurate.  it might be just a display thing...ignoring that, ultimately, it's like most smartphones I've seen.  With a screen this big, your phone is not going to last 2 days with a lot of usage.  My charging pad should arrive soon, I'll have that placed at work and should take care of the any battery inconveniences.

Not disappointed at all...just describing the details of the phone, hope it's helpful to others in their decision making.  It's a good phone.  I recently checked out the other flagship model, HTC 8X, and it is sooooo much lighter.  I tend to like heavy things, but just fyi to others.  The HTC feels like nothing in the hand, the 920 is quite heavy.  To make an analogy, the 920 feels like the old iphones, and the 8X feels like the new iphone 5.

Can anyone describe what you like about this software?  How do you use it?  What does it do well, specifically?

I've tried it many times over the years, but it's one of those softwares where you only "get" it when you use it for a long time, and your information collects and you start doing interesting things with the organization, etc.  So trialling it doesn't give you a proper taste of what it really does.

Living Room / Re: Great Talk on the Social Media Economy

Yep. That about sums it up. ;D

Similar to something Noam Chomsky said in an interview a while back. He noted that the "new" way of doing science seems to be to catalog and get better "priors" - and then apply analytic techniques to the data collection in order to better predict future outcomes. Which is fine for predictive modeling. But it gets away from the more classic approach which tried to discover the underlying mechanism(s) behind the phenomena.

Today, the emphasis seems to be more on trying to accurately predict future results. In a way it's almost like saying we've abandoned the "search for truth" and settled instead for building frameworks in order to make very highly educated guesses about things.

Scary.
Yes!  I've been trying to explain this, but couldn't figure out how to say it.  Thanks, you got it right on.

Not 100% certain, but I think the latest WP8 updates for the Nokia 920 have improved battery performance a lot.  I'm on my second day now with 30% left.  before, I could barely get through one day.

Living Room / Re: Anything wrong with formatting a USB stick in NTFS?
« Last post by superboyac on December 03, 2012, 05:54 PM »
:( Pardon my screwup! The correct answer is format the drive in exFAT, then you can use 8 x 32Gb flash drives for ReadyBoost (the max allowed), or have the drive ready for very large files (the limit is 256Tb in size)! For drives 7Mb to 256Mb cluster size is 4K, for drives 256Mb to 32Gb its 32Kb and for drives 32 Gb to 256Tb its 128Kb.
Thanks!

I never had a locked phone. Here in Italy is very common.
Plus, usually the telcos offer better conditions to new users than to recurring ones, so often it pay off to just move from one company to another, again and again.
this is true.

Truthfully, I've never gotten the hate.  If they subsidize so that you get a $600 phone for $200, $100, or free... well, you have to pay for it some way.  I do think that they should offer unsubsidized phones along side that offer- sort of like the Kindle/Nook.  But I for one would continue to get the subsidized version.  I'm staying with my provider, so why should I not benefit from it.
Well, in my mind, it's many things in addition to what you are pointing out.  For one, it's an awareness thing...most non-tech people are not aware that you can get unlocked phones and to figure it all out is quite a headache compared to walking into the phone store and just getting the traditional thing, which is cell phone subsidized plus contract.  If they offered a no contract phone right there alongside the contract phone, it would be a different story simply due to the awareness.  Then, I think more people would be inclined to get non contract phones which would affect the pricing eventually.  It would mean more competition and the price of unlocked phones would go down.  it would take a little control away from the big cellular companies and put more decision making opportunities into the hands of the customers.

Package deals int he long run seem to benefit big companies and take opportunities away from smaller companies and customers.  Normally, i'd avoid either extreme philosophically, but currently I feel like it's far too extreme in the favor of the big companies.  i don't find it as nice and beneficial as, say, a package deal involving a flight and rental car.
