FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Google Translation Plugin
« Last post by Armando on February 29, 2008, 09:49 AM »
Hi czechboy. Thanks.
farr is installed very normally in the program files folder. Here's the path : C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\Google_Translate\

Thanks... OK then.  :(
At least Archivarius will index databases... It looks a bit "dirty" and it's a bit hard to read... but better than nothing I guess.

;D Darwin, you're amazing. You remember my obsession for all these details. Thanks Darwin.

I might give it a try anyways. I really wonder how it plays with mdb (access databases) -- I'm really interested to know because, well, SQL-Notes current database backend is based on JET 4.0 (.mdb).  :)

PS : I wish archivarius was able to use Stellent viewers too... But at the same time, the plain text approach makes it very very fast for huge documents/databases and this is what I like about it.

Actually, I realize that others get a nice screen with all the codes for languages (see reply #35) : I don't. Is that normal?  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Searching encrypted archives
« Last post by Armando on February 28, 2008, 08:40 PM »
DiscLib can list filenames inside encrypted archives, (at least it seems to for ZIP and RAR), best of all - it's free.

I'll check that out.

I like simple and easy stuff, so I'd probably just make a small NTFS partition to store sensitive things and have it encrypted at the drive level, then remember what's there. I'd avoid using software if possible. Low tech, but likely more efficient. How many "secret" files do you have anyways? Probably not that many... Then again, I don't store anything that's really important on disk. It's on paper and physically secure. Dunno. That's my take on it anyways.

Thanks.

The idea of having encrypted archives for my incremental backups is pretty simple IMO : each archive has a date and a time. And they're encrypted because, well... since they're automated backups I never really know what they contain, and I don't want potentially sensitive/personal info readily available to anybody.

As I said, the problem is/was in finding a specific file inside all these archives with searching tools -- they got baffled by the fact that the archives were encrypted (when the actual file names were NOT and available for reading).

[off-topic] Darwin : I'd be interested to know your opinion about WDS -- compared to Archivarius or X1 for instance -- mostly in terms of accurateness and resource consumption (but also in terms f file compatibility, size of index... if you checked that of course). Maybe in that thread ?[/off-topic]

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR freezing?
« Last post by Armando on February 28, 2008, 06:34 PM »
About 1/3 of the time FARR just freezes

Is it really 1/3, or rather 1/6 ? Because farr will save changes to the ini file once every 6 launch/close. I'm still having problems with it. Less than before, but the firewall + antivirus combination is really slowing down the ini writing/reading

Thanks for the update Darwin.

if I minimize it to the tray will drop to about 3000KB but then rapidly balloon to about 22000KB and stay there...

IMO, if one uses Outlook extensively, 22000Kb is really no big deal (depending on the amount of available RAM , of course!  I understand that RAM is not always cheap everywhere in the world... or even as accessible).

General Software Discussion / Searching encrypted archives
« Last post by Armando on February 27, 2008, 09:30 PM »
Today I realized that a pretty useful file disappeared from my hard drive and so I was forced to search my incremental backups from the last 2 years. (Yes! Finally, I get to use them!  :) )

And then I realized that many indexer don't even index the file names in encryted archives, even if the file name itself is not encrypted. ie : Archivarius wouldn't index the unencrypted filenames of encrypted archives. I didn't examine too many options before finally trying winRAR's "find" feature. Beautiful. Worked like charm and found my file in a sept. 2006 archive. Took maybe 15s.

Which other solution do/would you use/recommend for such a task?

[slightly off-topic]Why not using something like mantis for mouser's software bug reports/suggestions (pplandry got me "hooked" to mantis -- used for his SQL-Notes project...) ?

mouser could just give members the special permission to add a suggestion or bug reports to Mantis after proper forum discussion, when necessary. [/slightly off-topic]

An example of the "relational" sort of thing I would want to use it for is a historical work database for my singing gigs (to help me remember what I've done!).  I would be listing jobs, singers, conductors, venues, dates of performances, works performed etc.  Any given singer might have performed in any number of jobs with me, any work might have been performed in any number of jobs, any job might have many works performed and even more than one conductor, and a work would have a composer and might have other properties such as translation or edition.

You can do that in SQLNote. Items can have multiple parents, items can be in different "grids", etc. Wikis aren't as powerful and aren't as flexible.

Like Pierre likes to say : Think of SQLNotes and its grids as a 3d container (like a cube) to allow you to have different perspectives on your data. Each face is a different way at looking at your own data. (Of course, the "container" could have as many faces as you want... a dodecahedron?...  :) )

SQLNotes can be used to organize many many things. SQLNotes can also export to html (you can also create special templates...).

Of course, even if I'm not  yet an "expert", I could help you too... but this week is going to be pretty busy for me... I'll try.

In the mean time, you could start with the basic Wiki. Have a look the Getting started page. In the Wiki documentation you'll learn a a bit about Items, Fields, Equations, Search/Filtering, etc.

Don't forget to also have a look at some of the examples! (look at the column on the left of the Getting started page) And look inside all the forums for help.

 :)

(IMO, the hardest think with SQLNotes might be all the subtleties allowing to display your data exactly the way you want (flat view, hierarchical view, save item state, filter criterias apply to subitems, etc.), and also the filters/sources "language" if you're not used to writing your own filters.)

PS : I,m also including the new alias I use with farr to search for info concerning SQLNotes! If you use farr, put the alias in your find and run robot alias directory.

nice idea jabberwock, i wonder how hard it would be though.

brandon and Armando, nircmd downloadable alias pack is here: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9365.0

Thanks.
I installed it many months ago -- I was only wondering it was a default alias (already included)... I guess not!  :)

If I understand correctly, for ID numbers to be user friendly, Grid/field names would  have to be always transparently translated into the underlying ID numbers (normally "invisible" to the user). The problem is that even in the case where SQLNotes would be aware that 2 different names are used for the same field/grid, it could become confusing for the user... who might not remember that 2 (OR MORE) different names are in fact used for the same grid/fields!

In the ideal idiot proof world, SQLNotes would correct all the formulas when you change the field/grid's name...

Like you said, "Pierre knows the implications of this better than us"....

How about using an ID number similar to the Item ID number that you are currently using, except the number will apply to grids.  That way, if grids are renamed, the ID number stays the same and maybe it won't be as confusing (like having " " being entered for the MusicItem field even though I'm now using Item).

If that isn't already functioning that way, I think that this a good idea : ID numbers for grids AND fields (fields might be functioning that ways already though, haven't checked...), independent from the names. Equations, formulas, etc. would only deal with the underlying ID number.

Sorry, to answer so late!
The main window is completely empty. I already tried clicking in it, etc. Nothing appears at all; it really "feels" empty.

I erased everything in my results.rtf file. Tried it : nothing. I added the $$1, saved it : nothing.

Something seems to be there though as typing the letters (a, b, c), will copy definitions to the clipboard!!

That was really quick! This is wonderful.  :-*

I'll admit that I still don't understand what are the rules underlying the "non-full" hierarchical view though (so full hierarchy will definitely be the default for me)...  :-[ It will surely be easier to understand over a coffee or something. I how you a big one !
