Living Room / Re: Do you want to talk about it?
« Last post by Curt on March 08, 2014, 01:59 AM »
Somewhere on the Internet I saw an article saying that some French 01Net site was having a draw in which I could win a license for MAGIX Photo Graphic Designer 2013 (today €70, but €90 when new). If the MAGIX company over the years had kept the same family names for their programs, Photo Graphic Designer 2013 would be identical to "Xara Xtreme 8". I used to have Xara Xtreme 5, so I knew at once that Photo Graphic Designer 2013 would be a fine program to have for free.

I went to this French page and gave one of my email addresses, in order to participate in the drawing, and a few weeks later (a week ago) I received a free license key for MAGIX Photo Graphic Designer 2013!

That sounded okay, didn't it? So why is this something you want to talk about, Curt? Well, let me quote myself, but this time the full sentence I didn't quite finish at first: "a few weeks later (a week ago) I received a free license key for MAGIX Photo Graphic Designer 2013 in French!".

In French!

Of course I don't just mean the email was in French - no, the program!
I cannot change the user's interface of the program into an English version!
I have tried this and that, but my license seems to be is for the French version only!

French is not dangerous when it is situated on the Internet; use Google! But this is located on my desktop, isn't it; there is no auto-translation here! I really don't have the patience to investigate my new fantastic program one line at a time, because I know that the next time I open it, I will have forgotten where that line was, and what it meant.

Well, this happened to me.
I won a fine program, but I really can't use it.

We need a thread for those moments when something just happened to you, and on one side you want to tell about it, maybe even talk about it, but on the other side it's not so big a story that it should have its own thread. Then you can maybe come here and tell about it?!

my main concern was that a screenshot most likely would produce a very large picture, and though large pictures work wonderful well on desktop monitors, they doesn't work at all on smart phone screens. The new generation of youngsters all use smart phones.

Anyway, forgive me having made noise, I will now keep silent and enjoy your teaching on video editing.

Download MediaInfo and open one of your video files with it. Take a screenshot ...

1) maybe "and click Save to text file" ... rather than a screenshot.

2) then come here and click "preview", and on the new page click [SP] and post the text (not the file) inside the brackets ]text[

There's ads on Google?
I haven't seen ads on Google pages since I started using AdBlock Plus

I already was using AdBlock Plus, but thanks to your post, I have now realized it too has "Settings"! Thank you, 4wd. ABP does not per default block Google adverts.

Oh! It doesn't seem to work! Doesn't seem to do anything.

To my surprise this works:
Simple Google Ads Remover
http://userscripts.o.../scripts/show/162023

but you will need Greasemonkey.

I find Google's search result pages becoming more and more crammed with spammy ads. The ads that are displayed near the top are NOT those that are relevant to my search, but instead they're the ads of those people who PAY Google the biggest sum of money!

I had enough, and Greasemonkey came to the rescue! I'd like to share this script with everyone. It's very simple - hides 4 areas on each search results page:

- hides the top ads block
- hides the right hand side ads column
- hides all DMCA notices
- hides the two rows of useless links at the bottom of page

At first my newly found happiness didn't last more than a few seconds. At the end of the installing, the Chrome part was blocked by my security program, because Google never will respect privacy.

It is 4 at night around here, so I will go back to bed...

^ I must say, the Avant homepage's praise makes me want to use that browser again! For a while Avant was my default browser maybe six years ago, but back then it was strictly a variation of IE, like today's "Avant Lite". This modern "trible engine"-system (called "Avant Ultimate") is very interesting. And Avant is also offering a one-click Video Sniffer!

Thank you, Target    I am installing Avant Ultimate right now.

Any Internet browser that for sure will browse?  :tellme:

I am so annoyed with a certain page my various browsers only can figure out to open if the moon is in a special phase, or if the sun is in the right angle or what the heck the necessary environment may be. PLEASE recommend me an Internet browser that will open each and every page on the Internet!. I cannot change the page, but I can change what browser I am using. I don't care if it is ugly, or payware, or has a silly interface, as long as it can do what a browser is supposed to do first of all: Browse! It will most likely only be used without any addons or plugins - except I do need to watch a video on the said page.

1369
^ ;D

But you're right: In the past I had absolutely no doubt when a security program was scanning the computer; everything would either freeze or at least get slow. Now I am always in for a surprise: "Outpost scanner found nothing" (that's not the surprise!), goes the popup. "Oh, my computer was scanned while ("whilst") I was using it, and I didn't even notice?" (that's the surprise)! Yep, you're right, Innuendo, there is cause to wonder if in fact it is doing anything at all! hahaha.
1370
^yeah, I know the feeling; "this is too good to last"...
I too was very pleased with NOD32
1371
I am pleased to hear your praise, Innuendo. But now a tiny voice is nagging me, saying some one needs to be reminded that Outpost is a quite easy system to set up: This new feature is not something that has made it more difficult to use Outpost - in fact it is a feature the user won't be presented with, unless he goes searching for it. My updating from 9.0 to 9.1 didn't ask me any questions of the kind.

General Software Discussion / use your own definition of malware w Outpost 9.1!
« Last post by Curt on February 28, 2014, 05:10 PM »
quote: Dear Reader, Thank you for subscribing to Agnitum Directions.

In this issue we inform you of a new product update — version 9.1, and announce our decision to cease support of Outpost product versions older than 8.0. The deadline is May 1, 2014. Besides, check out our new VB100 award on Windows 8.1!

Read on to learn more about your options.
Agnitum’s Outpost 9.1 security software enables users to formulate their own definition of malware!

op80logo_wot.jpg

We are glad to announce the availability of a version update, Outpost 9.1.

Version 9.1 specifically targets potentially unwanted applications and lets the user adjust detection criteria, so that a favorite toolbar or password recovery tool doesn’t end up in trash.

What’s new in version 9.1?

Specific targeting of Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUA)

With the new update, Outpost 9.1 optimizes dramatically the detection of potentially unwanted applications PUA. (A PUA may contain adware and spyware, install third-party toolbars or dialers, or have any other unclear objectives.)

New search categories for malware and PUA

These days it’s hard to draw the line between good and evil for each and every user, so Agnitum engineers have introduced flexible antivirus search settings to address individual preferences.

The user may choose whether Outpost should detect:
  •    Adware and other "gray" programs (grayware)
  •    Cracks, keygens and similar software (unwanted software)
  •    Commercial keyloggers, password recovery tools (riskware)

For the full list of improvements, consult Agnitum’s website:

Download App = TechTracker = an automatic software updater from Cnet.

Mandatory but old read about Cnet: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=27720.0
-Their TechTracker used to have a fair reputation, but is now being replaced by Download App.

Hello CNET TechTracker Users!

We're excited to introduce you to the latest version of our software update service, now called the Download App. This is the newest evolution of the CNET service previously known as TechTracker.

The Download App is a free application from Download.com that helps keep the software on your Windows computer up-to-date, as well as clean up the junk that accumulates in your system over time. The Download App scans your computer and notifies you when updates are available for the software you have installed, just like TechTracker.

As you know, software updates contain new features and patches that make your computer more secure. You can also use the Download App to remove unwanted software from your computer using the Uninstall feature.

Using the software catalog that powers Download.com, the Download App provides secure, spyware-free software updates, and makes it easy to keep track of all your software updates in one place. With the new Utilities features, you can scan your computer for junk files that might be slowing your computer down and get rid of them with a few clicks.

We've been working hard on this new version, and we've got plans for new features and improvements in 2014 that you won't want to miss.

Get the FREE Download App today!

CNET TechTracker is being shut down in favor of this new application with improved software matching and additional system maintenance features. Existing TechTracker users will need to update to the Download App to continue to receive software update information from Download.com.
