yes, that is correct fodder

just giving alternatives
not everyone knows how to get it the way you did
nor is it advisable for a novice
i would think

in fact the beta would be for a knowledgeable software person
imho....

i'm glad you got it though
looking forward to hearing more about it from you

W7 seems to be pushing windows live.
Without it you don't get a few things.
Like email or picture program and a couple others .
From what I've seen so far.

Of course there are many other alternatives.
For those who know.
But the average user who does not explore other options,
they will most likely go with windows live.
I'm pretty sure when the full release is out,
that when installing,
the live options will come up for installation.

I saw somewhere, I forget now,
that you can put your whole system in their live service.

General Software Discussion / Re: Fast Dial Warning for FF
« Last post by cmpm on January 09, 2009, 02:57 AM »
Yes, true, Mozilla is not at fault here.
Clearly it's the add on developer.
Perhaps this will wake them up, and the rest.
If this kind of thing be offered or considered by others.

I've had my FF set to notify of updates.
But not to auto install them.
Although usually I'll update.
Maybe I'll wait a few days and check their forums.
And other sources that I can find as well.

Most have been compatibility updates.
But this news makes updating a real task now.

Never liked that one anyway.
I prefer Speed Dial.

The auto update of add ons should be monitored by the user closely though, imo.

I think there is a difference in casually collecting info for advertisement purposes and aggressively monitoring activity that would make you a target for a particular purpose.

Profiling is what it's called in the US, to single out someone based on certain factors. Like a cop pulling you over cause you have a nice car and a certain color of skin.

To be real, a government agency here in the US can target you as a suspect. Which would give them free access to info google or any other service has collected. And your computer. At will at any time.

For an individual to take aggressive action to block monitoring practices and services would be too time consuming and costly, to me anyway.

If any service is deemed legit and not out to steal or worse, then that don't bother me. Google has it's analytic machine in most sites that I visit.

Not being engaged in illegal practices, I don't worry about it. If I was then that's a whole different ballgame.

Anyway, my 2 cents worth, which is just obvious observation of what happens on my computer. That everyone can plainly see if looking.

Have you tried No Squint?

https://addons.mozil.../search/?q=No+Squint

The key here is to adjust the image setting smaller.
And I can still have my text larger.
Then the page fits my screen and I can read it.
-Image includes the entire design of the site-
In most cases, I should say.

There are two ways of adjusting the page.
And remembers the settings for each page after it's set.
As well as a default setting in general.
It may do what you need.

If you don't have a drive manager,
this looks like it might help.
Though I don't know if it's settings will survive a reboot.

Yeah, that's ok, traveling the same road more then once, helps to see more of what is there.

And I have to say that Elite Freeware has been a source of great software. We can still browse the hundreds of programs still on his site with good info on them.

'how to' from what you may already have

from googling 'quick homemade gifts'
most involved some money
but that one may have something for you

or if you have a gift from someone else
and you think they would like it
called 'regifting' in my inlaws family..haha!
maybe it sounds bad, but it may work
depending on what you have they don't know about
being into giving is what matters anyway

General Software Discussion / Re: HowTo find ALMOST empty audio files?
« Last post by cmpm on December 20, 2008, 07:38 PM »
Cool, getting it done is the main thing.

The 'lots of files' and the size parameters clued me in on my dup cleaner. Googled to find that mp3 program, which I don't use, but was recommended on a forum or 2 for mp3 work.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp3val

This all I could find Curt.

Duplicating the folders and running a duplicate checker
will show the size of the files.

This program works good for duplicate checking.
But in the results you would have to check too many boxes to get the files out that you want to get rid of, I would think.

http://www.mindgems....ile-Finder-About.htm

But this 'auto check' option may help with the size.
I'll get a shot of the advanced options for auto check.

edit-cause it sounds crazy enough to work :)
Auto check automatically selects the oldest file.
Or can be set to.
Also it doesn't scan your whole computer.
Just the folders you select.

Then when you are done you can delete the new duplicate folder.

General Software Discussion / Re: Microsoft Update. Worth it?
« Last post by cmpm on December 19, 2008, 11:25 AM »
after reverting to windows update
open your microsoft product
help-update will take you to the update page
click the check for microsoft updates button
and that will get your microsoft update back if you want it

i've had the same problem
when microsoft update just scans endlessly
i switched to windows update
ran it
and then switched back and it worked

Yeah, could be, fodder, an application.
It's been a while since it has happened.
But I do remember IE popping up for some reason,
and I didn't know it would, or even suspect it to engage.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is it finally time to abandon IE?

I have found, as you all have I'm sure. That sometimes a link will execute IE without warning. Legit links that trigger IE for some reason and will not use Firefox.

I suppose that is the sites build or preferences or something. I don't know much about it. But it would be nice to have some warning. We all know windows update or Microsoft update will use IE when initiated manually.

There should be something to warn of a browser initiating, with a chance to stop it. Especially when there is a major security issue with it. Some sort of notice to click to proceed or halt operations when it's a browser other then what you have designated as the default.

There probably is in some of these security programs or -maybe- windows itself. Can it be blocked by a firewall and alternately let it run or not?

I haven't used IE since my last manual update, and the last time it kicked in for some site that I don't remember. Maybe I'll start a list of what sites initiate IE while clicking links in FF. It don't happen much, but I get an occasional surprise. I'm a pretty safe web surfer in general. Links to links and more links are not as safe though.

Wow, that's some good info fenix, thanks.
I have not implemented SVN because I just don't know enough about it.
I'll check out MS share point soon.

I use Skype with Lotus Sametime.Unyte currently.
And this is with people I know and trust.
It's a secure encrypted p2p connection.
Application Sharing or viewing.
But not advisable for public in general for the share.
Because of the total control, just about of another's app.

Anyway, you have given me more then I asked for.
For that I'm grateful.
Thanks.
