FWIW, the above worked from here.

Looks like some DNS lookup issues on the WiFi.  This link works for me now but I have the same error from another link in a PM on DC.  Weird.  :)

Non-Windows Software / Re: *NIX: Relatively Minimal Host OS for VirtualBox Use
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 20, 2015, 10:43 AM »
Status update: have been using NixOS for over a year now, has been quite good, though took quite a while to get used to.

Also tried Guix -- a bit more to my liking (based on pieces of NixOS), but still has a ways to go.

Tried Manjaro again (thanks to phitsc) -- the brief experience I had with the Fluxbox 15.10 edition this time has been nice so far.

Wondering whether to try out Qubes -- this appears to be a focused effort to carry out an idea of isolating execution of programs (perhaps among other things).  Anyone else try this already?

I have noticed Qemu pop up here and there over the years.  Do you have any experience with it?

SUPER has not recommended because there are so many more alternatives now without the confusing interface or crazy website.  I use xmedia recode now.

I have been away from video conversions for more than two years.  An eternity.  So I try to refrain from suggesting software.  The landscape has shifted too much.  :)

I took a brief look at their web site.  It claims to convert nearly all audio and video formats.  Would I be right in assuming it utilizes AviSynth?  Converters that do tend to be very flexible.

You may well have hit the nail on the head there. Irrational (you used the euphemism "creative") behaviours induced by fear and panic

Especially with all the restructuring in Redmond this likely has a few orders of magnitude more impact than average.  Everybody is sweating the chop.  :)

I tried Super a few times because people who liked it really liked it.  But it seemed like every time I hit the button to start processing I realized I forgot one setting.  And after a few times when I would remind myself not to forget that setting I would forget a different one.  It was too frustrating for me.

@dr_andus the type of anguish you describe is why I always disable updates.

Apparently disabling the updates may not even do the trick anymore, Win10 installation will still download:

Never had such warning (Warning: selected invalid function), however.

I guess some things work with some PCs and not with others.  Yesterday I installed Rollback RX Hone freeware.  It is limited to 7 snapshots but you can go forward as well as back.  Also you can consolidate the snapshots into a new baseline, and thereby have 6 to use as you like.  It seems to work ok.  And it is still being developed.  Also the support forum is active.  I posted a question today and got a reply already.

http://www.horizonda...roductId=40#Features

The Pro version is supposed to have unlimited snapshots.  If I see it on a giveaway I may try it out.  But 7 snapshots may be enough to act as a replacement for System Restore.  Also I have images with Macrium Reflect in case something goes sour and I can't boot or some other problem.

The only real drain on the system is evident during bootup.  Once on the desktop applications all run normally.  I tried a restore as a test and it restored the snapshot in about the same time as a restore point would use.

Thanks for your reply.  :)

I don't know.  But I am curious if he was ever groped by director Sam Peckinpah.

Just as another thought, could he use a VM for surfing or whatever? Then just delete the VM every so often and copy a backup to use again? That's what a lot of people do.

My computer instructor at the college is keen on making bootable USB sticks of Linux Mint using Rufus.  He likes Mint for Windows users because they can figure out right away how to run and close programs.  Also on the off chance you are hit with a virus that targets Linux just image the USB stick with Rufus again to recover use of the stick.

Oh thanks! Just tried out DelayedCuts and it's pretty cool. Seemed easy enough to use; even got the rid of the toast window since I didn't really need all that information particularly. Appreciate your time

@dcwul62  It figures an unusual utility like that would be written by NirSoft.  Lots of stuff you can't find anywhere else.  :)

To the original problem of forcing FAT32 media such as USB sticks to sort alphabetically, I use FAT Sorter on my mp3 player.  It sorts a full 4GB mp3 player in a few seconds with one click.  Plus it is free.

But I suspect there is a rule based file manager out there that does it.

@dr_andus the type of anguish you describe is why I always disable updates.  As long as Windows 10 has a forced update scheme I will not run it outside a VM where I can just kill the VM if it is hung up like that.

Putting a bunch of nearly untested fixes on in a pile is asking for disaster.  Anyway, I have been saying that since the beginning and people probably filter out all my posts that contain the words "Windows update."   :)

Sorry you got nailed so badly.

No joy.  It installs.  I can create a snapshot.  But when I select the snapshot and hit the Revert To Selected Snapshot button, I get a msgbox that says Warning: selected invalid function.

Too bad.  I was hoping to replace the hole left by the broken System Restore mechanism.
Bummer.

I like to use this tool to make things start with windows when no other solution works

Hi.  Glad you get use out of RunInTrayMod.  In this situation it sounds like what you are doing is more in line with the purpose of DelayedCuts.  You feed program shortcuts to DelayedCuts and set a delay in the range 10 seconds to 10 minutes.  When this info is saved it puts a shortcut to the included DelayedLoad.exe that actually runs the programs after the delays., in the StartUp Folder

DelayedLoad has an optional "Toast" info window that shows the icon and program name of the next program that will be launched.  You can skip a program by clicking the close 'x' in the Toast window.

The reason it insists on shortcuts only is because a shortcut can be loaded with all the information the program needs to run correctly such as exe location, startup directory, command line params, run minimized maximized normal etc..  So by feeding it the one item no other info is needed other that the delay time.

It is available on my page
http://milesaheadsoftware.org/

Note that the delay is from the time DelayedCuts itself loads.

Wilders has the "sandboxing & virtualization"-directory, where a few threads are about  ToolWiz - the first listed is about 25 pages!

http://www.wildersse...g-virtualization.98/
http://www.wildersse...-time-freeze.313299/

I know ToolWiz Time Freeze works on W8. I have used it for some time.  What I am trying to find out before trying it is if the ToolWiz Time Machine will work.  The last version to my knowledge was released in 2013 and I see no mention of support for GPT drives.  I want to try it because my System Restore does not work and TTM is a replacement for it with the difference that it works on the disk sector level rather than the file level as Restore Points do.  For this reason the default cache file of 1.5 GB can hold a lot of snap shots.  Also people say it works even if your VSS and/or System Restore does not.  I didn't see any mention of GPT and Windows 8 back when they were discussing TTM Beta as that must have been around 2011.

I just don't want to scramble my entire HD if the program is not GPT compatible.

Edit: I found a reference here where ToolWiz claims GPT and UEFI support for both TTF and TTM:
http://forums.toolwi...ic.php?f=7&t=606

This could be a very nice freeware. It is not for replacing stuff like Macrium Reflect or other system image programs.  It is a replacement for System Restore that does not use System Restore itself.  It does it on its own at the sector level.  I think I will give it a try today.

Hopefully I'll be posting a bunch of smileys later that all went well.   :)

Is 2.5.0.4 then some kind of a "final" version, or a you certain it will change again some time soon?

I'll use it for awhile and see how it acts.  If it doesn't seem buggy then it may end up pretty much as it is now.

Comment Explorer 2.5.0.4 Improve ToolTip action a bit more.  Now clicking the mouse on the caption bar clears the ToolTip even if there is a file selected.  However it is at the cost of losing the ability to click into the Explorer Folder when it does not have focus and still get a ToolTip.  Just click the same file again or click next to the one you want then use the arrow to select it.

It's a kludge but the action is a bit more consistent now I think.

N.A.N.Y. 2016 / Re: NANY2016 idea - [non-runner] Caret Control
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 10, 2015, 02:10 PM »
first, is it even possible ?

The problem that's going to be run into is that there are so many edit controls, across various programs, each with their own caret handling, that I think any attempt at a universal solution is tantamount to madness.

thanks Skwire,
I was thinking that could be a possibility --
also considering it's a relatively minor annoyance, I think we can safely drop the idea.

EDIT// changed thread title to "NANY2016 idea - [non-runner] Caret Control"

You can do selective things with AHK without too much difficulty.  I have a catch all hotkey program called Transpose because I originally wrote it to transpose the last 2 letters typed when I hit Control t.

Other than adding new hotkeys the maintenance is adding ahk window classes to groups.  Now and then a browser will change its main window class name so you have to add it etc..

But by using #IfWinActive you can selectively change the behavior of the hotkey depending on which program has the focus.

I'll attach the source in case you want to look at it.
