HALF-PRICE AD MUNCHER LICENSES!

To help 2012 go out with a bang, we're offering 50% off all
licenses until the end of the year!

...

BIG THINGS ARE HAPPENING...

We've spent years working on new technologies for Ad
Muncher, and are extremely excited that these will soon
be seeing the light of day.

Your support is critical, now more than ever, and will help
us to finally realize our vision for what Ad Muncher can be.

Thank you for making this possible, and best wishes for
Christmas and the new year from the Ad Muncher team!

This should work for renewals as well as new licenses.

i wonder what their new technologies are.  they said they would never address https, and a lot of google's stuff is going that way.  No big deal, but it makes the value of AM a little less.  What could they improve to make up for something like that?  curious...

A little off topic but not really...
I thought youtube's latest commenting system is pretty cool.  Through voting and stuff, the most helpful comments get moved up, bad comments are hidden (but you can still read them if you click on them).

I think one of the easiest and best things to add to the site is simple/powerful collaboration tools.  Let's say a group of us here want to work on a  project...how do we help make something like that thrive?  It would have to be a place to have live chats, live or recorded video, screensharing, etc.

The forum itself is perfectly fine.  From my experiences, it's the best designed forum I use by a longshot, so I'd be wary of changing it.  But the collaboration thing is something that could really boost the community into v2.0.  the collaboration tools would have to be secure and private, even from other forum members, so projects can be worked on in peace.

Then we could work on projects together during slow moments at work, at night, etc.  and maybe we could do some great things.

40hz...how does cigar box nation approach the "working on projects together" idea?

I'm not discounting the project...

@pk: of course you are... ;-)

the creators of pi took strong steps to keeping their device from being another olpc-like thing to either be ignored or hijacked by big businesses like olpc was. in my daughter's school the administration openly admitted they worried about things like the raspberry. because from what they heard about it, the self-taught kids were more knowledgeable about them than most teachers were. so where would their math and science teachers fit in with something like that? that is a question which begs a even bigger question. ;-))
and don't even get me started on what their attitude towards the Khan Academy is.
Man, I hate hearing things like this.  It's such a huge issue.

Thanks 40!  Wow...this is exactly the kind of stuff that I'm into.  This was what I was calling the "portable university".  I even hacked one together with that chinese tv box thing I got last month...AND I put Khan academy on there to see how my nephew would respond to it.  This is really what I should be doing instead of what i am doing.

Now there's an OS update out, at least on AT&T. Highlights include: from Nokia improved battery metering, sharper photos; from Microsoft  the option to have WiFi always on and SMS drafts. The auto brightness setting seems to be a bit more dynamic too.
just got it, thanks.  i'll be picking up my charging pad tomorrow as well.

Two hours into my first day of work as a Wal-Mart greeter, an ugly woman came in with her two kids. Hearing her swear at them, I said, 'Good morning, welcome to Wal-Mart. Nice kids, are they twins?' The mom answered, 'Hell no, they ain't twins. The oldest one's 9, and the other one's 7. Why would you think they're twins? Are you blind or stupid?' I replied, 'I'm not blind or stupid. I just couldn't believe someone slept with you twice. Have a good day, and thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart.' My supervisor said I probably wasn't cut out for this line of work!

The way I look at anything like this is similar to some of the thoughts above...does the innovation foster and encourage creativity and personal innovation?  it has nothing to do with the device...whether it's a computer or a tablet or a smartphone.  It's what can you do with it?  The pc is a device that allows a customer to build it from scratch, independant of any company.  Most people don't but the opportunity is there.  Then, you can use whatever OS you choose, whatever software, even design your own software, design your own hardware...this is why the pc changed the world.
The smartphone currently doesn't offer any of this.  The benefit of today's smartphones is that it makes computing easier for people who are NOT trying to innovate or be creative.  Basically, it makes computers easier for people who don't like computers.  It's what the microwave did for people who don't want to cook.  Do the microwave people argue with commercial quality oven/stove/grill manufacturers about which is better?  No, it's a silly argument.  Same with a smartphone.  it's not a computer, it's nothing like it in the true sense.

All these people using smartphones primarily are people who never truly cared about what the possibilities of the pc was.

Now, the actual smartphone idea has a lot of potential, but the stupid ass politicians and corporations have to be willing to help out the masses on this one.  If we can build our own smartphones, then it will become a revolution like the pc 30 years ago.  raspberry pi is the beginning.  and ultimately, the world is soooooo very close to realizing this.  All it would take is the ability for users to buy a cellular chip at fry's the way we buy hard drives and motherboards and stuff.

it's just that damn cellular chip and the ability for anyone to connect to an existing cell network.  Once this happens the world will change.  That's what I'm waiting for.  One day, i'll be able to go down to the store, buy a cell chip, call AT&T and activate it, and use it however I like.

Last night I watched this documentary, Reel Injun about the way Native Americans were portrayed in films and on TV. One of the clips they showed was the Injun Joe cartoon character. But the worst Warner Bros. cartoon clip was Bugs Bunny picking off Indians with a rifle as they attacked a fort. Each time he shot one he drew a line to keep count.  Then he shoots one and only draws half a line(I forget if the chalk broke or whatever) and he recovers his cool by saying "that one was only a half breed!"

Oh man!!  Yeah, it's wild seeing the blatant racism in those cartoons.  Unfortunately, one of my favorite minor characters is in that Injun Joe cartoon, the name is "Wagon Heels"...his name is Sloppy Moe, a little whacky blue guy.

blackface, asians...man...i'm thinking now of this one, a plane is flying over the african continent and they did some CRAZY racist thing, i don't quite remember exactly, but it was whoa.

This raspberry pi is going to change the world...and other stuff like it, like the arduino.  I'm soooo excited about this and for the young geeks out there.  I remember when my dad forced me to build my own computer in high school and what that did to me.  And even though I may have gone a little overboard with it for many years, it has saved my life in so many ways I feel.

Did you maybe get it from there?

Not really sure...I actually reinstalled Windows this weekend!  lol...overreaction possibly.

I'm not sure I'm following, but is it the case that they are causing you to look through options you'd otherwise not see?

If so, then may be that's the point...
I'm saying for the longest time, the bar was like "Web, news, images, videos, etc." with the common things there.  This is without being logged in.

Now it keeps changing all the time.  And News sometimes goes completely out of the bar and I have to go to more-->even more to get it.  Why?  So weird.  Now I check, and News is back on the bar.  WTF is going on?

Living Room / Best router and configuration for VPN?
« Last post by superboyac on December 16, 2012, 10:35 PM »
For the first time, I am starting to consider using a VPN.  What is the best router/modem/configuration for using a VPN.  I know Renegade has mentioned Privacy.io (and others).  I'm trying it and it's very easy to use, which is nice...I find VPN an intimidating thing.  My issue now is trying to make sure I get the fastest speeds possible.  I don't mind a bandwidth speed hit, but not a lot.  Currently with the Open VPN options, my speed goes from about 1 MBps to less than 200 KBps using the Open VPN option.  That sucks.  I'm pretty sure it's a configuration or hardware thing, but I have no idea how to analyze it, so I need help.

I'm willing to get a new router, doesn't have to be cheap.  I'm willing to install things like DD-WRT if it helps also.  I just want to have some discussions about it with the folks here, thanks.

« Last post by superboyac on December 16, 2012, 10:13 PM »
^Doesn't surprise me too much.  My GF was a devote paper advocate until she bought a Nook more for the web browser than anything else.

I think she's since bought and read more books in the last six months than she has in the last two years. She loves the thing.

Our pile of old magazines and newspapers has also diminished drastically since she now gets most periodicals she regularly reads through it as well.

Whoda thunk?

Did she get the epaper one?  interesting...i talked my mom out of a nook recently because I didn't think the web browsing would be enjoyable for her on epaper.  But if it is, then I'm going to re-recommend it.

Living Room / Why does Google keep changing the bar menu order/visibility??
« Last post by superboyac on December 16, 2012, 08:03 PM »
Before everyone starts explaining HOW to fix this (which I'm interested in also), the main question is WHY google is doing this.  Google seemingly changes what appears in the black bar every few days.  It's very annoying.  The main ones I use are web, news, shopping...probably in that order.  Now, the news keeps going away.  Why?  doesn't make sense.  Then I click on the "more" drop down, and there's only like 4 things there, and I have several inches of screen below it.  Instead of listing a whole bunch in there, they make me clikc "even more".  I mean, this is not only intentional, but a little suspicious.  If someone says this is for simplicity or something, i won't buy it.

I know the basic fix: log in with your account and customize it.  But I don't want to log in, because I don't like googling while logged in.  All the companies are ramping up their BS tactics.  2013 is going to be a very annoying year politically.  Guns & internet will be the issues all year long.  And I don't think the companies are going to lose, unfortunately.

More interesting news:
http://www.csoonline...ks-peaked-at-60-gbps

Seems to be that the US is preparing (or in the middle) of a digital information war with China/Iran.  All this shutting down and restrictions here in the US and the UK seems to be a reaction to that.    Ugh.
