Living Room / Re: Forum Signature Spam: Let's discuss how to handle..
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on September 13, 2007, 09:33 AM »
i think we will have to block users from SETTING their signature until after a few posts, then hopefully this will scare them off early.

So do you think that in the majority of cases that the spammer will be identified before they get to add their signature??

That would obviously be a nearly perfect result.

I think the 80/20 rule comes into to play here as well: as long as the majority are contained...

as for the irfanview you can see the above post of their forum

Ah well, like it was adequately explained in the other forum, IrfanView relies on the file extension and .ini or .log or .anythingelse is not the same as .txt (though they all may be text files)

I'm sure irfanview can load text files too because I've used it myself. But you might have to download the plugin pack

I'm pretty sure it isn't a plug-in (I can't see it in the list anyway), I think it's part of the main programme.

One of the alternative Windows Explorers that has a Quick View Window should display the text as your scroll through the files in the file view. I haven't got time to get a full list, but AC Browser for example...

The xplorer2 Review probably has lots of people's favourites too.

It's a good point: since when did Pete become an expletive? I love this explanation!
-Perry Mowbray (August 25, 2007, 07:04 AM)

I hope that explanation was a joke. It tells the exact date and time that phrase was first said but then it says there is no written record of it ever happening?  :-\

I'd assumed it was  :)

;D I tried not to use "Pete" but it fit... I always thought "Pete" was St. Peter, but I like the itinerant farmer explanation (though it doesn't actually identify who Pete is or why his name is being invoked).

St Peter makes sense to me (when being sensible): the farmer just made such wonderful non-sense!!

Anyway, I've often made a similar argument, Perry. Why bother being cutesy pie when everyone knows what you mean by a------ or "fudge and banana peels"? I mean, don't get me wrong, I find this quite useful now as my 5 year old is reading and my 3 year old is a linguistic sponge. Don't really need this kind of language coming out of their mouths at this age (that can wait for school to start for the 5 year old next week!). But this kind of language is so commonly used in the media, on playgrounds, and sadly in households now that it seems an affectation to avoid using it while substituting a word or a phrase that makes it obvious what our intent is in the first place! However, I look on it as leading by example. The words are out there and I use them  :-[ but I don't really want to teach my kids, or my friend's teenagers, that it's OK to use them in everyday language.

Exactly: just doesn't make any sense. When you leave two letters out from a four letter word you would to have to not know the word, which means you could have used the word anyway for all those who don't know the word :-\

We are generally a family of non-swearers; my middle son finished high school with the reputation of the boy who didn't swear! So let me encourage you: I think the statistics show that kids are much more likely to pick up the family values than what they bump into at school or in the community.

Ultimately, I feel it's a respect issue - most of the time, I'm able to avoid using this kind of language in mixed company and I do so because I respect that these words ARE offensive to many people and am sensitive to that.

Excellent observation! When I try to figure out why I don't swear in front of people, part of the reason is that it's out of respect.

When I took my wife on to a building site I was doing I made all the contractors mind their language in her presence (which they did), and she was very thankful [power is a wonderful thing  :)].

It's interesting that you think it's familiarity, it may well be, but the person I am most familiar with I am also the most embarrassed when I do swear in front of... funny, eh?

-cranioscopical (August 25, 2007, 07:58 AM)

Babies... But only when we're not sleeping: they have a natural reaction to parental sleep which is to either become wide awake and/or be discomforted by something or other ;)

For Pete's sake . . . I get way too much wonderul spam.

It's a good point: since when did Pete become an expletive? I love this explanation!

Funnily enough, also on that site is this interesting comment about obfuscating non-acceptable expletives by adding dashes to the words middle letters: eg: for Cpilot's benefit: p----e. Why do we do it? For four letter words, that are in such common usage, it's just as good as writing the full word (and just as offensive).

That is just fantastic!

I love the Lanux Expansion Pack  ;D  ;D  ;D Your Bio may have to wait 18 or so years until you get some time back again  ;)

Take care, take time and have lots of fun!

I haven't seen the video yet, but I'd think that the "automated" part of it would only be useful for display purposes, not actual image manipulation.

For example, displaying an image on a web page, or photo album, of a much larger photo would really benefit from this type of thing.

That is a good idea!

What about doing a site specific search? For example: CCleaner which should display all CCleaner references on DonationCoder?

Then again, I suppose you could do that through the Forum Search anyway???

I have given a great deal of thought to creating a nextgen review system, with a hierarchy of editors and using wiki-like technology.  I'd love to work on it but we are talking about a very big project and i haven't yet found a way to either fund it and i dont have the time to work on such a large project without funding.

What about working up a Proof of Concept on DC then asking DC Members who'd like to throw in? I imagine that it's not only financial but more time issues as well?

Is this what you meant once when you said "a big review site", because if it is I think you undersold your idea  ;)

A donationcoder review wiki - I like it! There would not doubt be issues, but this would a very interesting experiment
I'd imagine that it wouldn't be a full Wiki as we'd want to limit edit rights to members or certain members, but apart from very granular Forum permissions, I can't see how we could maintain a living page as the Introduction/Index to the software categories?

And that's where I think the benefit of DC doing something like this is: we have a large number of expert/well informed/opinionated  ;) members, that if we were able to produce an aggregation of their usage/opinions/mini reviews into something larger it would be a fantastic resource.

It's the living nature of something like this that appeals to me: software changes, versions change, etc, etc and not always for the better. What's the point of reading a comparative review that recommended Software X over Software Y if Software Y's development has overtaken X's?

The review is out of date. Where as, if we had an Introductory Page that listed Feature Rankings for the reviewed versions then the comparison would take care of itself. Having the ability to have multiple reviews of the one software by different people would be wonderful  :-*

Well, that's a brief outline of a methodology.

I like it!

But I wonder if a Wiki may not fit the bill better? If you start H&M can anyone else add to your Index/Introduction page?

I'd also consider grouping the features into Classes such as the standard Functionality, Usability, etc and average out to give overview ratings across software groups.

I really like this idea.

You may want to check out our very own LaunchBar Commander, which should have this functionality shortly  :)

A while ago I floated something not dissimilar to Mouser where DC members could add their rating for various aspects of a particular piece of software.

Mouser was concerned that it was too easy for unethical people to overrate their products, or products they like, and if that happened then it certainly isn't a great idea, or not a bad idea too easily ruined.

But I still like the idea of having a rating system, or as Renegade said a "Non-Testing" review. I thought that aggregating all of DC's opinions about applications would be a great addition to the site. Sort of like Wacoopa but not just usage. It'd work hand-in-hand with the other reviews too, and actually add more value to them.

Anyway Renegade, in answer to your suggestion: I agree!

LaunchBar Commander / Will LBC support openning of Bars via HotKey?
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on August 18, 2007, 08:08 AM »
I'm not sure what the HotKey ShortCut is for in the preferences, but if it was for a SubMenu would it open the SubMenu under the current cursor location?

Or could the same thing happen for a Dock?

I'm not sure if it's been discussed before, but ak's Post reminded me that I'd be keen for this functionality.  :)

Thanks for the great software!

Perry, are you able to launch an auto-upgrader for all programs ???
 :tellme:

What would we need to have? What would you need to make it happen?

Just the location of the PAD File.

The way I've done it at the moment (a bit proof of concepty), is to get details from the Author's PAD File and download the file as specified in the PAD.

I double Agree... so let's see:
1. LaunchBarCommander [Get's me into applications]
2. RoboForm [Get's me into sites]
3. Then comes the long list of productivity applications, the top being, um, ummmmm: PSPad would be involved in most aspects of what I do I'd think?
-Perry Mowbray (August 10, 2007, 02:14 AM)

Good point App: I have not had Wakoopa installed for some time, but looking back and using your non-auto start suggestion I'd have:
1. MS Visual Studio
2. PS Pad
3. MS Excel (How could I forget all the time I spend on Excel?)

Living Room / Re: Do you listen to the radio?
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on August 06, 2007, 05:58 PM »
My ISP here in Australia offers FREE Radio streaming (not everything, just a good selection), so often the radio is being streamed now (as the sound is better on the computer than through the cheap FM radio).

I really like the idea of community radio too, so when I'm not listening to Swiss Groove I'll be tuning into the neighbour's radio show  8)

Over the years though I've developed an aversion to Talk-Back, repetitive hits and opera that sounds like cats being strangled, which keeps me hopping around the dial or Internet for a few well loved programmes.
