Living Room / Smart Tech people do some really stupid things
« Last post by wraith808 on November 04, 2018, 01:05 PM »
I saw this article today on Medium:

How I used a simple Google query to mine passwords from dozens of public Trello boards
https://medium.freec...rmation-8e5ccfef2724

excerpt:
A few days ago on 25th April, while researching, I found that a lot of individuals and companies are putting their sensitive information on their public Trello boards. Information like unfixed bugs and security vulnerabilities, the credentials of their social media accounts, email accounts, server and admin dashboards — you name it, is available on their public Trello Boards which are being indexed by all the search engines and anyone can easily find them.

With a simple google query, you can find this same info.  And this was a few days ago, and it still exists today.

Code: Text [Select]
  1. inurl:https://trello.com AND intext:@gmail.com AND intext:password

in a simple google query turns up username and passwords for some company gmail accounts.

I was flabbergasted when I saw that they still exist!  There were other queries in there too for all sorts of simple information- stored in publicly accessible Trello boards.  The even worse thing about this, is that this article was written on May 9.

We know about the stupid things that people do.  Using password for their password or abcdef or 12345.  But this kind of stuff... I would still think that people at tech companies would take this into account.

I guess I was wrong.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Drag Drop renamer
« Last post by wraith808 on November 03, 2018, 11:01 AM »
A major question is this: Can you use an existing external commandline tool to do the renaming? So that the job of this app is mainly to queue up and invoke commandline calls to the renamer?
With each tile just specifying a different commandline to run?

If we go this route, I can create the command line tool to take the commands for renaming, if desired.

So *that* explains it.  I was having problems connecting to the site for a while, and didn't know what had caused it.

From my experience, it was only in the first iterations of most serious CCGs where rares gave you an insurmountable advantage.  There are still rares, but they are rare for different reasons rather than mechanical reasons.  Money grabs tend to do them as pay2wins, but others not as much.

Yeah... I get that now.  Hopefully, this is better for you.  There are some idiosyncracies to it also though, so be forewarned.  That's the reason I use something else instead, no matter how cool it is.

I think most of the downsides are described on that page, though it's missing that if something saves its place in a certain way (haven't been able to narrow it down), then when you try to open it on the alternate screen, it will instead open on the original screen.

Technically, yes...but was vague to the point that it felt like my Mrs was telling me I'd done SOMETHING wrong...but not WHAT I'd done.

That's one of the reasons that I hate using external dependencies.  It can be a bugger to tunnel down to find out where the dependency is missing.

UPDATE ON PREVIOUS ISSUE (BY TOMAS)

Issue has been resolved - turned out Chromium wanted some DLLs I didn't bundle, and wouldn't cause an issue for anybody who happened to have them (other stuff may have installed them for people) - I will be bundling those DLLs with AudioMarker from now on so we won't run into this again!

Virtual desktops seem not to provide new 'canvases' on which to work and organize your projects.  Virtual desktops appear to be mostly for separating open windows and running programs.

Unless I missed something.

If anyone knows of a program that provides new clear desktops or folders, on which one can carefully place icons, etc., and re-establish as desired, please let me know.

As said before, strikes me as absurd that such doesn't already exist.

This does exactly what you want.  And it's free.

A preview aint a view?  ;D

No.  It's just a preview of the cover of it.
1335
Best approach for now regarding the objective of providing more 'desktop-like' working space in which to carefully arrange icons, etc., is to create additional desktops.

Windows directly allows this.  Google for instructions to change desktop folder.

In order to change desktops one has to log-off and back on.  New desktop will then be in effect.

After one finishes working on new desktop, one can use the same procedure to go back to original desktop.

DesktopOK works with whatever the current desktop is.  So just save icon positioning within each as wanted.

Skwire, another one done.

You don't even have to do that.  If you're going to go to that extreme, see Lintalist's answer above.  Virtual desktops would do it for you without having to log off.

OK, I just downloaded AM onto another laptop, extracted it into its own folder (as you would do) and ran AudioMarker.exe - absolutely 0 problems, ran straight away.  I can only honestly think the fact tomos has updated .NET and it's not showing properly on his system could be the possible cause.

Does that other laptop have visual studio installed?

wraith808, Windows 10 Pro.  There is still that feature, to arrange and place your icons as desired, within each folder.

But, as said, as spotty as hell.  Pathetic.  Hit and miss.  Sometimes saved, mostly forgotten.

That's why a third-party solution is called for.  Microsoft engineers have other things requesting their attention.

By the way, icon arrangements appear to be held at the following registry location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\

But not at all easy to understand.  Coded.  Take a peek.

Theoretically one might be able to 'Export' that branch of the registry tree in order to save folder icon positions.  Then 'Import' back in to re-establish.

Trouble is, nearly EVERYTHING in the entire system regarding icon positionings is included there.  Each and every folder.  On all hard disks.  Plus extra stuff for good measure.

How are you doing it?  I don't see that option.

explorer.png

UPDATE: Ok, so I see that it has been gone since Windows 7.  There is a way to enable it with a registry file.  That's probably the reason that it's buggy - it's not meant to be used.

XYplorer's built-in file viewer displays pdf files properly and does not lock the file being viewed, so you can rename it while viewing it.

That's not a true view though if you're talking about what I think you're talking about.  It's just a preview. (Unless I'm totally missing out on a feature)
1341
wraith808, Windows does indeed allow one to move icons around and place 'em in a folder.  And is supposed to remember such.  As long as the context menu... View, Auto-arrange... is unchecked.

What version of Windows are you using?  I remember that being a feature at one point, but in Windows 10, it doesn't work in that way.  They are tiled in all of the icon view orientations.  Maybe it's a difference of OS?

Confirmed New Feature:

[ Invalid Attachment ]

I don't get this feature.  What are you showing?
1343
Aren't you actually looking for multiple desktops? (where you can then used DesktopOK etc)

If you're using Windows 10 it should be built in - how to here https://www.howtogee...ktops-in-windows-10/

For other Windows you could try:

https://www.dexpot.de/index.php?lang=en
https://virtuawin.sourceforge.io/
and no doubt others.

( If you are into AutoHotkey there are various scripts for managing/creating multiple virtual desktops as well )

If that's what he's looking for I seriously misread the question...

I just saved a Notepad file and a WinRAR zip while it was open without any issues. Apparently, this is app related more than anything else. Some of MS's Office suite products have this restriction as well.

Some applications take the whole file into memory, thus releasing the handle on the file.  I didn't think Notepad was one of those, but checking, apparently it is.  If you'll notice, however- if you save the file loaded into notepad at that point, it creates an additional file with that name.

For my test, I created a file test.txt and opened it in notepad.  It had one line in it.  I then renamed it test1.txt.  I updated the file open in notepad, then saved it.  The newly created test.txt had my updates.  The text1.txt did not- it had the original text.

So you mean that when a folder is opened with icon chosen as display type, you want to freeze the positions of those icons?  Have you tried Stardock Fences?  I know it displays custom folders on your desktop and they retain the positions of the icons.  I don't know if you're going to close and open them individually if it will work for your purposes.

https://www.stardock...com/products/fences/

As far as the request itself, the problem is that Icon mode in Explorer (rather than the desktop) is only pseudo icon mode, i.e. it doesn't support drag and drop positioning like the desktop; it's always ordered in some fashion.

UPDATE: Looking at my installation of Fences, it uses the tile method of showing icons also, i.e. it will only allow you to sort the order, not the position.  Example follows:

Fences_Example.png

Notice that in that image, they're in an arbitrary order that I dragged and dropped them into.  Not sure if that's what you want.

so what is IrfanView doing when (on my command) it renames an open picture file?
 :-\

Its closing the file that it has a lock on, renaming it, and re-opening it.  Or its streaming the whole thing into memory, closing the lock, and then reopening it.  It's not impossible, as I say.  It's just based more on the fact that he wants it to rename a file that something else has a lock on.  I can create a quick test app that would prevent anything from renaming that image file- even irfanview.  :-\

SumatraPDF allows for this and also has a "Rename" option within its own file menu or by pressing F2.  If you choose this option and rename a file, SumatraPDF will rename it and then re-open the PDF with the new filename.  In fact, if you open a PDF file in SumatraPDF and then rename it outside of SumatraPDF, it detects this and its internal "Rename" menu entry becomes greyed out.  At that point, you have to use the "Save As..." option.  FWIW, I use the rename feature all the time for the same reasons as the original poster.

Yup.  And as I said, that's on the PDF reader :)  Thanks for pointing that one out!  I'd forgotten that SumatraPDF did this exact thing!

N.A.N.Y. 2019 / Re: NANY 2019 - Android App - Point Motivator
« Last post by wraith808 on October 28, 2018, 09:30 AM »
So, after playing around with it... I still think that there is a place for both together.  Each day, you get points and accumulate a streak.  Your point totals for each day is compared with your prior point total.  When the streak is broken, your points for the entire streak are tallied for a point total for that streak.  So in the end, you get more gamification by the fact that your streaks and point totals for the streaks and days are compared.

Also, I think that adding the ability to set certain goals and rewards for those goals would be a useful addition.

I download many training documents in PDF format in Windows. Unfortunately, many of the file names are generic or truncated so the corresponding file is hard to identify by those titles.

Can someone please code an app that renames files (primarily PDFs) while that PDF file is open for the Windows operating system?

Thanks in advance.

The problem is the fact that the PDF application has a handle on the file while it is open.  In that case, nothing can rename it without the file being closed first.  You'd have to have a PDF application that streamed it all into a temporary file or memory and then released the file in order to make that work.  And in that case, Windows would allow it to be renamed without a special program to do so.
