Living Room / Re: [NSFW - Parody] Sony Releases New Piece Of Technology
« Last post by Darwin on February 17, 2009, 01:19 PM »
Sorry, ehtyar - hadn't meant to single you out! I agree about the proudction and acting being top notch - in my case, if it wasn't for the swearing, I would have possibly have thought it was real! NB in North America, particularly "between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui and Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles", there is VERY little swearing allowed at all, which makes the video obvious as a spoof.

The swearing was sometimes unnecessary, but it certainly didn't ruin the entire video.

Ehtyar.

The swearing was monotonous and, much worse, highly unoriginal. I want cussing to shock, alarm, titiliate and offend me. This video's swearing offended me because it was so pedestrian and lacking in subtlety  >:(

Thanks for the links, 40hz. I was particularly interested by the discussion/history of OpenOffice. Good read, and it makes you think... (ouch!).

General Software Discussion / Re: best free rename utility for 2009 - which is it?
« Last post by Darwin on February 17, 2009, 10:59 AM »
After just reading in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1146 that Bulk Rename Utility isn't updated anymore (just when I found some bugs, duh!), I want to ask you guys which utility you recommend.

It should be free, I don't need RegEx and I like it when I can use a program intuitively.

And it would be great if the author still updates it.

He does... see this thread on his users forum: http://www.bulkrenam...ic.php?f=5&t=524!

EDIT: I should have read abterix’ reply first  :-[

Just to point to the thread on the BRU boards announcing that BRU is no longer being retired and that development will continue:

http://www.bulkrenam...ic.php?f=5&t=524

Also, here is a thread about the ViceVersa ad I mentioned above:

http://www.bulkrenam...ic.php?f=5&t=564

The next release should allow users to get rid of it...

Note that the new owner of Bulk Rename Utility is TGRMN.

OK - I couldnt' get it to post, either and no longer have Jim's direct e-mail address to hand. brotherS, why not post your suggestion/request in the BRU users forum - Jim was active there as recently as yesterday:

That link should take you to the suggestions board.

AFAIK, it’s back in business but has been sold to TGRMN Software. There waS some kerfluffle about this transtition last fall because there is a sliver of advertising for Vice Versa Pro at the bottom of the GUI. I just installed this version on my Vista 64 machine and it's OK. I did make a couple of donations when this was freeware, though, and wish that there were some way to turn it off (though it's really not that bad).

Anyway, the point is that it IS worth contacting the developer - I'll send it in along, if you like?

Good idea! From some guy who rarely posts.  :-[

But, see, you could if you wanted to, as this was your 10th post  ;D

(5) I was in love with my very cute cousin from when I was 9 to 11 years old.[/url]).

Me too! Not your cousin, of course, mine... and I was about 20 at the time. She was my second cousin, whom I had not met until I visited the UK for the first time... I didn't DO anything about, in case anyone is wondering/cares  :o

Reading through others posts:

1. I too love computers but could not code my way out of a paper bag.
2. My wife is a Christian while I am an atheist. However, we get along just fine.
3. app - does doing donuts in a mall parking lot at 4 am in a blizzard count? My friend and I walked home because he bent his car around a light pole)...
4. I am a Canadian but have lived in the UK, Korea, and the US

5. I am dirunal

A Welsh poet, eh?

1. I, too, suffer from cluster headaches, migraines, and sinus headaches.
2. I collect wristwatches, pocketwatches, and fountain pens (haven't done either in years, mind you).
3. I was a huge, HUGE, Beatlemaniac as a teenager -> John Lennon was shot when I was 11 and I was instantly transmorphed from a geeky, out of step, classical and jazz loving adolescent into a geeky and out of step Beatles fan in the dying days of Punk rock...
4. I'm an omnviore.
5. I am dirunal.

When did you purchase v.9, Tide? I find that if I wait for about five to six months, upgrades go on sale, as noted in the original posting in this thread...

My only beef with TCC is that it gets an upgrade every fall/early winter and that at $100 full price, the 50% off upgrade is still quite steep. They do have a maintenance plan, but it's about $40 on top of the upgrade price and is only available at the time of purchase (I believe free upgrades are for 30 or 90 days from purchase, the maintenance agreement extends that to a year). Of course, I really have nothing to complain about. I use almost none of TCC's advanced features and v.9 works GREAT on my machine...

DC discount is a great idea

Yea, its a Compaq NC6000 Business Laptop... I'll eBay it and see what comes up. Might get lucky. The warranty ran out so if I have to take it down to the local repair shop its all out of (my dad's) pocket... trying to avoid that.

Shouldn’t be necessary - I’ve had mine completely disassembled and put it back together myself with no ill effect. Try to find a downloadable (pdf) copy of the service manual (DON'T pay someone for it - Compaq/HP provide them free of charge, you just have  to FIND it - I suggest checking out the notebook review forums. Someone there can probably send you a pdf version.

Just to note - hordit is going full pay-per-service in 90 days. They're looking at making the current free account $45 a year or $5 a month (25% discount if you pay a year in advance). I received a nice (and apologetic) e-mail to this effect this afternoon, explaining the reasoning behind the decision (economic downturn).

Just thought I'd update the thread. I expect we'll see more of this from other companies and service providers in the (not too distant) future.

PS welcome to DC, rowanhanna  I started writing the above to say that and got hopelessly sidetracked... We love to have developers/company reps participating here, so hope to see more of you  :)

I did in fact pass on the offer - thanks to being mesmerized by cranialscopical! I use DOpus, PaperPort Pro, and X1 Pro and am simply not sure that I need another indexer/tagger/file manager/way to keep track of stuff. I did run the trial for Benubird and it was impressive enough that I was tempted to spend some time with it to figure it out... However, I also realised that I was in danger of spending money I shouldn't be spending at the moment and uninstalled it  :o I’m still interested in people's experiences, though...

I received an acknowledgement of my last beta bug report yesterday (though I had sent it about a week ago). The developer IS working on this - hopefully we'll see a stable release soon. I'm currently not running it and am using Vista's built in hide icons feature. As noted earlier, after about 6 hours, I can get by without it without being inconvenienced... however, I don't want to work like this forever!

I have the same issue as Carol - over 5000 posts and haven't seen anyone's (mine included) signature in a week or so...  :o

Just to note - Scooter Software, who develop Beyond Compare, has a cross-promotion on at the moment with Wisco, who develop SynchPST. I mention this more because Scooter Software is endorsing SynchPST:

We've had many users request Beyond Compare add support to synchronize individual messages between copies of Microsoft Outlook. We have no plans to add this feature to Beyond Compare, instead we recommend using SynchPST.

I've tried SynchPST in the past and couldn't get it to work out of the box (though note that in checking this story out I did read the FAQ carefully and probably missed a step or two  :-[).

Anyway, just thought I'd update people with this. I find it significant given Beyond Compare's reputation. I no longer have any use for this type of application - only running one Outlook install and back it up a number of ways, including MailStore Home - but maybe this will be of interest to others...
