Living Room / Cell phones: The next frontier in ad business?
« Last post by Lashiec on January 01, 2008, 08:17 PM »
A new study by the consulting firm Deloitte draws a conclusion that scares the hell out of me: people is willing to watch ads in exchange for free content. OK, up to this point nothing new, right? The problem is that we're talking of the mobile phone space, and the long discussed idea of Google to deliver targeted ads. Ars Technica further develops the analysis on this possibility to a fearful scenario, which could be developed if people is willing to give out any right to privacy for free <insert your favourite thing here>. Add to that the open nature of a mobile phone, specially when coupled with certain carriers, and we have a wonderful future

Living Room / The first true vaccine for your PC
« Last post by Lashiec on January 01, 2008, 07:53 PM »
LG launched a few days ago the closest thing to a real vaccine it could be developed for a PC... a pen drive filled with antimalware software ;D. You can find more about it in press release, but nothing interesting apart from how the antimalware software works (duh). And a shot of the thingie in this blog.

I'd like to know what software is running, and if those paltry performance figures shown at the LG site are true, because if the price (undisclosed at the moment) is too high, it may not be worth it, compared with premium models from Kingston or SanDisk.

All are M4A, encoded with various versions of iTunes + Quicktime (iTunes v4.6.0.15 with QuickTime 6.5.1, iTunes v4.9.0.17 with QuickTime 6.5.2). I did not encode them myself (if I did, I'd use Vorbis :P), they were pre-encoded ;D

Actually, Appeal, the developing group behind Outcast filed for bankruptcy during Outcast 2 development... BUT most of the guys working there founded another group which is now working in a game that looks quite interesting, though it does not have much of a relation with Outcast.

You have Realms of the Haunting? :o, that game used to be one of the most wanted in collectors' lists, and it was not selling cheap in eBay.

MDK games are great, but Beyond Good & Evil at least has a logical plot ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Any web service for file storing?
« Last post by Lashiec on January 01, 2008, 01:50 PM »
Update! Without looking for it, I found the ultimate solution, and as best things in life, it is not handled by a big company, but by a single guy, Matt Falcon, who was generous enough to set up a server at his home and share his connection with people all over the world just to let you upload and share worthless things with the rest of the Internet ;D

The site is Hostfile.org, and apart from a sensible set of rules to use the service, it lets you do everything and it's the closest thing to having your personal webspace without exactly having it. By the way, the guy is accepting donations, mostly to cover up hosting expenses, as he is no longer managing the service at home.

Yes, they're plain .FLAC files, no weird file extensions.

General Software Discussion / foobar2000 0.9.5
« Last post by Lashiec on January 01, 2008, 01:34 PM »
One thing I absolutely love about New Year's Day (apart from insane partying and sleeping 'til night :P), is that every year a new version of a software application gets released, and a version that absolutely knocks the socks off. And they never failed to disappoint me.

2008 does it again, with the release of the final version of foobar2000 0.9.5, which has been mentioned briefly by other fellow members. I'm absolutely blown away by this update, because it literally puts foobar in another level, bridging the gap that existed between it and the competition, while retaining the customization possibilities for which foobar is so loved. What are those impressive features that makes foobar so attractive to a user like me you may be wondering? Exactly one, a new default user interface, check it out:

default_user_interface.png

Peter Pawloski (foobar2000 main developer) managed to design a flexible and attractive frontend, heavily inspired by the 3rd party plugin ColumnsUI, not as powerful, that's for sure, but much more easy to handle for the mainstream user, thanks to the addition for a wizard that lets you choose from a predefined set of appearances, without messing with 'Tagz' (foobar's scripting language) but still giving you enough choice to find something it accommodates your tastes. The addition of other elements of customization, very easy to use for anyone, further lets you customize the chosen look, again without messing with code. The new customization system used by the interface also lets you add new UI Elements (akin to ColumnsUI panels), which already spawned interesting possibilities, like Facets.

The list of improvements around the program is really big, feels almost like a major new version. Check out the changelog, the release notes, further explaining what's new in 0.95, with screenshots, and a screenshot gallery.

I use Notepad++ too on Windows, but I would be lost without TextMate on OS X and I'd pay for it on Windows if it was available...

Well, E Text Editor supports TextMate bundles, and the developers of both apps are in contact to further develop this feature. It's the closest thing in my opinion.

Guys, for screenshots of Multi-Edit use Google ;)

Heh, incidentally I was reading this article yesterday, only that New Year celebrations prevented me for finishing it :P

I own both Outcast and Beyond Good and Evil, and although I've completed neither, they are both outstandingly good games.

Outcast... *drools*. It's a pity it's so darn hard to get these days, and Infogrames is not helping at all (no reissues, etc.). Beyond Good & Evil is pretty easy to find brand new in shops, specially in Spain, and for little money.

Aha, I saw the MSVC DLLs loaded in Process Explorer, but I wanted to be sure. No registry entries = peace of mind.

Well, I think I found a couple of bugs. I have a bunch of MP3s using the APEv2 tagging, and they're showed as non tagged. FLAC files are not even recognized.

What formats does this support? I downloaded it yesterday and I see it reads MP3 (no ID3v2.4, unfortunately) and Vorbis, but seems it does not like MP4 and FLAC. Also, does it write something to the registry? Is it written in VB? (shakes before the vision of CLSID entries)

Let's see...

  • Find and Run Robot
  • foobar2000
  • Miranda IM
  • Opera
  • xplorer²

Probably... I think 5 apps more could fit in there.

"Python is Old programming language and is outdated"This is the quote or words i heard from some of the recruiters/Employers of top IT companies in india's second biggest IT city Pune.

Uh, but wasn't Python the rage as lately? At least the Linux guys are always talking about it...

Doesn't Borland (or whatever they're calling themselves these days) have a pretty nice Java IDE as well?

JBuilder, written in Java of course, just like any other Java IDE (except for a little one we use at the university, but I can't recall its name)

General Software Discussion / Re: A Firefox Lover's Guide to Opera
« Last post by Lashiec on December 30, 2007, 06:24 PM »
tomos: Opera adblocking. It's not as powerful as Adblock Plus, but it seems to be improved in 9.5 (don't know if they finally added the possibility of using regular expressions for the filtering rules), and not as convenient but it's integrated in the browser, so Opera Software can't make it as easier (Google may get angry).

And courtesy of nontroppo wiki: Flashblock. This is as good as Firefox's extension.

I think there is some way to achieve what you want with tabs, but really, it's a matter of the situation, more than preference. Sometimes it comes in handy (for example, when you close the 20th tab, and you go back to the 1st one, which was the one you was reading), and sometimes you curse it. With Firefox it's the same, but reversed.

Living Room / Flash Game: Room Escape
« Last post by Lashiec on December 30, 2007, 01:32 PM »
Remember that Flash game in which you have to escape from a living room solving puzzles? Well, now I'll introduce a Japanese take on the idea, with three different rooms you have to escape from. Be sure to read the instructions, and to select the English version of the room you want to play in (I'm going through the Guest House now). It does have a save feature by the way, so don't be afraid to lose all progress (provided your browser is configured to maintain cookies between sessions).

The rest of the site in entirely in Japanese, so there's not much too look at (unless you know the language, of course). In the "Favorite" section, though, there are a few links to other Flash games, including the neat Samorost and its sequel.

Living Room / How to achieve good customer service
« Last post by Lashiec on December 29, 2007, 02:36 PM »
A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across this article (don't know where) by everyone's favourite blogger, Joel Spolsky. Despite continuous self-references (let's be fair, blogging is all about narcissism half of the time), it's a pretty good article outlining seven steps to build a good customer service within your business, applicable to every field you may operate into, including software development, of course. It shows that, a little break to consider things before you react, may help you building a good relationship with your troubled consumers, with all the benefits this poses.

What about "my network places" then? That doesn't work for me in xplorer^2 :/

Ah, I don't have a network set up at home, nor I'm connected to any other network, apart from the Internet, so I don't have much use for it :)

Living Room / Re: Laptop hard drive... 5400 or 7200 ?
« Last post by Lashiec on December 29, 2007, 01:52 PM »
Well, you have the benchmarks, which are able to tell you which is faster. Samsung access times are "slower" (as if someone could notice 3ms of difference...), of course, in computer time that's a lot, but the Samsung has overall faster speed in transfer, both in reading and writing.

On the other hand, the Seagate excels in server benchmarks, which means it handles better than the Samsung multiple reading/writing requests at the same time, this is influenced by seek times. Of course, the Seagate consumes more energy, which is normal being a bigger diskdrive and (I suppose) having more platters than the Samsung, that means more mass to move for the drive motor.

I think you have to weight pros and cons, the Seagate is bigger, has better access times, and handles server workloads better, but consumes more energy, which is something to consider with laptops, and costs more. The Samsung have better transfer speed, consumes some less juice and is cheaper, but is smaller, and access times are worse along server performance. It's your call, but each one is the perfect nemesis of the other ;D

Hmmm, I wonder what is doing that window called xplorer² in my taskbar ;)

The only thing for what I launch a explorer window these days is for the Control Panel, just because it's not arranged in alphabetical order in xplorer :)

Reality: Even if Windows XP is a stable operating system, the peace of mind will cost you a mere 8-10 MB, released as soon as you exit any explorer window.

I'll try typing that secret phase in Notepad, never bothered to do so 'til now ;D

EDIT: Ow, a "piece of mind" is running cheap these days ;D
