Living Room / Re: What are your best working hours?
« Last post by Eóin on July 27, 2006, 05:50 PM »
When I worked in the local cinema my best programming hours where 10pm to 3am. These days though I get very tired about midnight so only program from about 6pm until then.

I don't want to bring things off topic but I've a question related to distributing runtimes along with a program:- Will you always get the advantage of processes being able to share DLLs or those it only work if the DLLs are placed in the System directory?

I ask because I noticed recently on my PC that I’ve an awful lot of programs with contain say msvcr71.dll or equally popular ones within their own directories. Does windows spot that all these copies are identical and shares the memory or is each one loaded seperatly?

Accidental assignment/Accidental Booleans

I think that's one of those everyone did at some point!
I had one of those errors recently. It took the addition of a serious lot of logging code to track down where the error was originating, needless to say when I discovered it was a simple typo I was fit to scream :-[ .

I liked this one, it seemed to lose the plot a bit during the middle but the final lines brought it right back on track  .

Clearly a fake from looking at the pictures. If you read to Q&A's the finder claims its covered in real fish scales which of course makes no sense given that it swims like a mammal. Also the lack of an anus means it msut be as full of s**t (sorry for my language) as its seller :D .

Living Room / Re: finally! - rubik's cube solver
« Last post by Eóin on July 08, 2006, 02:47 PM »
I used to be unable to refocus, but invented a technique where I crossed my eyesight - worked instantaneously, but meant I saw images inverted (where normal people see things popping out, I saw holes).

I was exactly the same when I first learned to see them, in fact most people I know started seeing them this way. In my opinion this is an easier and more natural way which begs the question why don't they invert the images instead of relying on people to learn the harder technique.

The different between the techniques is the spot on which the eyes focus. In the cross eyed technique you look at a spot closer to you and than image, to achieve the other technique you point your eyes to a point behind the image. This is hard initially but one trick is to focus on an object approx 1-2 feet from your face, then while continuing to to keep your eyes fixed on that point you move the image in question between you and the object. Then move it back ad forth all the while keeping your eyes fixed on the original object, at some point you'll see the 3d image. Tricky, but as I said once you get used to it it becomes really easy.

Do you think it is related to my inability to see these "magic eye" 3D pictures?

Seeing those images is just a question of being able to refocus your eyes to either behind the image or in front of it depending on the specific image. Once you get it once you'll wonder how you ever had any difficulty :) .

(By the way I'm pretty sure it is illegal to connect via a wireless network without the owners knowledge and permission.)
-Carol Haynes (June 27, 2006, 11:35 AM)

That's a fair point, but there are also open networks out there, such as in hotel lobbies, which you can connect to. I don't think my folks are looking for unprotected networks to abuse :) .

netstumbler

Thanks, looking into it now.

General Software Discussion / Small utility for finding Wireless Networks?
« Last post by Eóin on June 27, 2006, 11:26 AM »
Hi all, I'm just wondering are there any nice utilities for discovering wireless networks available or are you limited to the software which comes with the adapter?

I'm asking as my folks are off to USA for a holiday and want to keep in touch with home via Skype. My Dad was just wondering is there a nice app which makes finding available networks quick and simple?

Kind regards,
Eoin.

Living Room / Re: new Futurama series! finally!
« Last post by Eóin on June 23, 2006, 05:16 PM »
I own all the Futurama boxed sets so far and have watched them numerous times with and without directors commentary. I've loved every episode and can't wait for the new ones.

As for Simpsons, well I tend to make a distinction between old Simpsons and newer episodes. Early Simpsons are excellent cartoons and my fondness towards them is similar to the views expressed by others here. However later episodes are abismal affairs indeed. Its hard to nail down when the quality began to drop but I would put the U2 / Garbage Man episode as one of the turning points where things went sour.

Perhaps it was cleaned before sinking it, it looked pretty stripped from the images maybe they removed most (all) of the pollutants.

Just an idea.

A lot of my mp3's are 320 kbps and 256 kbps...

This has nothing to do with vibestreamer, but if your a bit  of an audiophile maybe you should look int Musepack. It supposed to be the best at higher bitrates.
