Does this also affect all browsers based on Chromium?

^ @Curt, why the snarkiness :tellme:
I'm not going to 'defend' the software -- and dont think anyone else needs to either -- suffice to say it's damn good. And this *is* a software forum - why shouldn't a software author post about their software :-/

There is also lockhunter.

this the one I use (on Windows 7)
dont need it often but has worked well for me

I can't find something online!
How can I change file type icon in Win8.1
I searched for the above on duckduckgo
=>
first three results are from superuser,
at least two of them appear to answer your question

this not quite clear to me here:
It boils downs to any "app" which tries to display a "html" from the web is vulnerable to been hijacked. And the author has nothing to do with it.

Generally a program uses "object" in the code which uses some dll to show, say IE window in the program itself. Since the main browser Edge, Firefox extra is not called but a scale down version of an old library, so the vulnerability increases.

1) if the App is using the IE engine to show a web or html page, what has Firefox to do with it?

2) what you're saying -- sounds like any PIM's that use IE engine are (currently) risky?

Saw an injured one close up once, but they usually on inaccessibe cliffs (mind you AFAIK they live in burrows, like rabbits).

Love the first image here especially:

I had a quick look, and found this, here:

Microsoft ... chose to use the Windows Defender name for 3 distinct products ...

Windows Defender (downloadable for XP, included on Vista and Windows 7, antispyware only, includes some useful system utilities, too, not present in MSE or Windows Defender/8-RT)

Windows Defender Offline (uses the same technology as MSE, but runs from a bootable disc created by the downloaded "wizard")

Windows Defender (included in Windows 8 and Windows RT [and Windows 10] that is a full antivirus and antispyware program)

MSE on two Windows 7 machines here is using the same 'engine' as the Windows 8/10 Defender, i.e. the version number posted by deozaan.

Doesn't seem to have worked that way in this computer. Win Defender was Off and is updated beyond that version(1.1.113804).

where it didnt update (cyberdiva) was (as MSE) on Windows 7 computer.
May be different on 10?

odd they dont give any credit to the original

one of the comments says:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, adult [female]. No fledglings in April. Migrating, probably tired and hungry. Possibly dazed from colliding with a building?

the original uploader says it flew off in the end

Many thanks, Deozaan. I've now checked. The version number is way out of date, but apparently I succeeded in turning WD off when I installed Kaspersky and did not succeed in turning it back on when it kept nagging at me to do so. So Windows Defender is turned off. I'm assuming that means that it hasn't been scanning anything and won't be doing so, and thus it will not be vulnerable to the malware threat in question. If I'm wrong, I hope someone will let me know.

if you have another AV installed, it will disable Defender.
(Could you run W.Defender, and update manually to be on the safe side? -- not sure would Kapersky complain though)
1338
How are we supposed to tell whether Microsoft has fixed the vulnerability on individual computers?

The linked article says:

To check whether your Windows PC has been updated, head to "Windows Defender settings" and note the Engine version number. 1.1.13704.0 or higher means you've been patched.
thanks Deozaan,
on the older MSE, click the little drop-down arrow beside help, then 'about' gives the relevant info:
Engine Version: 1.1.13704.0

Apart from the sainthood of mouser :) it is interesting to see how looking at things more objectively can be constructive:

That was an interesting comment for the poster to make.. It's almost as if the world of free advertising-sponsored apps have made people think that they are generating revenue for us just by using our apps.  Let me clarify for folks that no one makes any money from DonationCoder software based on the number of users, installs, etc.  There is no adware, no bundled 3rd party toolbars, etc. that generate revenue for us.  Not only that but we pay a pretty hefty fee each month (over $300/month) to run the servers hosting the downloads, etc.  We're not complaining -- the donations from users still covers our costs -- but yeah, do realize that we aren't making any money just based on downloads/installs/users..

not much to say here that hasn't been said before [thinking along the lines of the state of the free/paid software world and all in-between], beyond that I'm thankful that donationcoder continues to work the way it does, and that at least the basic bills are getting paid -- and yes, that *is* a hefty fee

On a serious note though:
I often wonder about the people who mention commercial use, but according to their member status, have not donated.
I know what it's like to be self-employed, and yet have little or no work (just coming out of one of those phases): so I wouldnt presume that everyone *can* donate. Yet, at times it seems like making a donation is just not taken into the equation as a possibility, at times it look like it's not even considered.

study sounds good
summary of my life above (!)
enjoying the better weather, playing boule (petanque) more seriously -- in a league, interesting to do something where one has to learn to empty the mind, focus, and be grounded to play well: very zen really (at which I'm still not doing very well FWIW, but not stressing, it's the most basic league)

this the one I used for the job: again old, but might still do the job:

here are two more tools that will be useful in this task.

http://jpgtime.learsy.com/
that Learsy one is a thing of beauty

# no install
# simple to use -
  • select files (all if you want) / click Set time from EXIF - it show the Exif time in the "New Time" column
  • compare
  • select those you want to change
  • click Apply changes

then go off and donate to the author (donationware )

Curt, [edit] see also next post [/edit] this old but might be of help -- I have used another app and posted about it here but could not find it :-(

revisiting this (correcting created date of photos) -
this about correcting the date in the Exif info if that incorrect.

From the current newsletter (Nov.6th 2009) from Imaging Resource. I added a link for the recommended app in the quote:-
camera manufacturers record it in the Exif header of their image files in several places. The DateTimeOriginal, CreateDate and ModifyDate tags all record it, for example. The trick is to reset all three on a new image.

ExifTool can do that with one simple command. There's a Windows version and a Mac version. The simplest way to use the utility is from the command line (Terminal on the Mac).
[...]
   exiftool -AllDates-=1 *
Full article: http://www.imaging-r...v11/20091106.htm#adv

I do have a GUI (portable) for that:
the only info in the about box is:

ExifToolGUI v3.42 by Bogdan Hrastnik
Freeware interface for Exiftool

Here's something that would help: Can someone make a png image that has a Description/Comment field that *DOES* show up in these other programs?  With such a sample png I should be able to figure out the difference.

well, using Photoshop CS2, I can add the info to what appears to be the same field (Description >Description) as in the jpegs, but cannot find the added info using Xnview (which did find the info from the jpegs).
EDIT//
FWIW the info I added to the PNG, using Photoshop -- supposedly in the same field as the jpeg -- can only be read by Photoshop. I do wonder if there is a limitation on PNGs, that they are treated differently than other image files (jpegs at any rate). Hopefully you find something helpful in dluby's file.
//EDIT

But the jpeg info was difficult enough to find as it was.
So,
I'm starting to wonder:
could it be added to a more universally accessible field?
(I, and I imagine others, move screenshots around to different project folders so not always using SC to read/view.)

Any file manager users out there that add info to their files for access via the file manager?
And/or file managers that can read info -- but from where?
I know XYplorer implemented something re adding comments to files -- or was it for tagging of sorts?

I remember (I think) there being a bit of a fuss a while back about descript.ion files being used by one manager -- looking, I think they not a good idea (non-standardised, separate file with info for all files in the folder)

Will do some research myself if I get a chance over the next few days.

Screenshot Captor / Re: AltTab away from SC is dysfunctional
« Last post by tomos on May 17, 2017, 07:16 AM »
Turns out that this was related to an always-on-top window (that I didnt notice cause almost moved off screen).

The always-on-top window (here was 'Everything' search window) always shows first in the AltTab 'dialogue' - then comes the window with focus.

Most software will AltTab as normal -- focus is already on third window when AltTab pressed, but with some other software (so far: SC & PhotoSupreme/IDimager), the Everything always-on-top window is read as having focus, and AltTab pressed once moves focus to the second in line i.e. the app itself, (then you need an extra Tab press to 'get away' from the always-on-top window to the third window).

Make sense?
Unimportant, but interesting, (says Tom procrastinating :p)

^ that is relevant,
but I think that what f0dder and Stoic Joker say is more practically relevant to the situation. XP gotta go (unless machine is offline and not connected a network). Otherwise you are taking a risk: if that risk involves other people, then the decision (be it passive or active) to keep XP will probably be the cause of trouble for you and them -- by the sounds of it, even if MS tries to support it.
