Nice.  just downloaded in on my pcs.  will try on laptop later on.

If you are into speed dials and find a better one for it than FastDial please let me know.  I may put it on again if I don't have to set everything up manually.

I tried it, but I'm quite used to using mouse-gestures, and I can't get that working yet, so I'm no convert yet.
It does look great though, that part works alright :Thmbsup:

I did like the way text looked.  But I got thrown by the thumbnail tabs.  I guess I could turn them off and install a SpeedDial instead.  In fact I started to set up FastDial.  But I am sick of doing it.  If just pasting the settings would install the dials it would be ok.  But I am sick of navigating and adding.  I have too many browsers floating around and I have SlimJet already set up.  If I saw this first I think I would keep it though.  It has a different look without being too weird.  :)

Haven't seen many laptops that can beat the macbook screens, but dunno why you'd buy an external monitor from Apple, really.

I dunno unless the Apple just fell off the tree.  :)
It's hard to tell what it's hooked up to without crawling around.  There doesn't seem to be a PC under the table as there is on other setups but maybe they are mini-servers and it is wired in or they are just smart terminals.  It says Windows 7 Enterprise on the login screen is all I know.

Control-Alt-Del to log in.  No yelling at Cortana will get you on.  :)

General Software Discussion / Sleipnir Browser for Laptop lovers?
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 29, 2015, 01:19 PM »
 I noticed Sleipnir Browser today.  What caught my eye was stuff on the home page about the rendering producing easy to read text.  Since blurry text in browsers is a constant issue with my Toshiba Laptop I tried out the portable version.

I did change the fonts to the ones I use in Firefox.  I must say it does look as though I can read smaller fonts in this browser.  The text seems a tad less blurry.

I thought I would post since I see many Laptop users searching for a way to avoid the blurs.

The browser is a chrome variant.

Most of these seem to me primarily consumer-oriented features. Not much there to convince a business user (in fact they're likely to wind them up with the forced download and reminders).

I notice in my college's library and computer court all the PCs are running Windows 7 Enterprise.  Although many have Apple flat screen monitors.  I guess the Apple flat screen is tough to beat?  A friend has a Mac Laptop and the screen is paper thin, very lightweight, and high quality.  But I digress.  I agree.  I don't know why any business would go past Windows 7 unless they want the touch screen point of sale system(e.g. they are a restaurant.)

Why not just turn them around? They don't appear to be physically/ergonomically directional, and the strict left right relationship is only really critical if you're taking a hearing test..

True.  The fad of making the music seem to circle around your head is long gone afaik.  Besides, it would just circle in the opposite direction I would think.  The plugin thing is more of a hassle with desktop computer speakers.

These are my headphones:

http://www.akg.com/pro/p/k240mkii

The overear fabric is a velvet cover for them. Very comfy.

They look cool.  (The headphones I mean.) Trouble is you can't hear what they sound like unless you already have them.  Like watching an ad for Flat Screen Super HDTV(or whatever they call that 4k res stuff) on your SD set.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / RollbackRX Pro 10.4 50% off Black Fri Cyb Mon
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 27, 2015, 08:11 AM »
I just purchased RollbackRX Pro at a 25% discount using this link:
https://horizondatas...m/281/purl-wdtrpromo

I am in Florida and no sales tax was charged.  $51.75

Important Note:  RollbackRX does not support Trim.  If you are looking for a snapshot utility for an SSD try another product.  I have a spinner and I doubt I will update to an SSD any time soon.  So for me it is worth the $51.75.

Note that there is no version number shown on the promo download but I checked with the Rollback RX Pro forum and was told it is a license for v. 10.x and will activate the latest v. 10.4.  What I did was download the 30 day trial, made sure it installed ok and did a snapshot restore as test.  All as expected.  The demo activated with the provided license key(requires reboot as Rollback does the activation stuff beneath Windows to outsmart cracks.) I have been using the Home free version for a couple of weeks so I am confident I have figured out how to use the utility(after reading the forums for it.)

Speaking of the free version, it may be downloaded here:
http://www.horizonda...roductId=40#Features

Home works fine on my Laptop but it is limited to 7 snapshots.  With the baseline made during installation that leaves only 6 to play with.

Note that before deciding if you want to use this software you should know that the recommended method of imaging your system with programs like Macrium Reflect is to save your system image before installing Rollback.  If you make an image with Rollback installed, then re3store it, the link in the MBR will try to call non-existent Rollback code.  IOW, your system will not boot.  Also defrag messes up the snapshots.  If you wish to defrag with Rollback installed it is recommended to consolidate the baseline snapshot as soon as the defrag completes.

Windows System Restore does not work on my Laptop.  So for me it is good to have RollbackRX as a replacement.  Having played around with the Home version for a couple of weeks I have found that I can uninstall Rollback, defrag my system, make a Macrium incremental backup to establish a new Macrium image baseline, then install Rollback again, in about an hour.  To just defrag my system requires consolidating the baseline after defrag which takes a few minutes and a reboot.

The alternative image backup is to use their Drive Cloner RX product.  This will back up the snapshots with Rollback installed, but only  if you do a full backup image.

If you decide to try RollbackRX please read through their forums first.  From what I read just winging it and defragging your HD without then consolidating the Rollback baseline snapshot is a quirk way to end up with a scrambled system that may not boot or may require restoring your backup image or, lacking that you may get stuck doing a repair install or at least an MBR fix.

I think it can be a valuable utility for spinners especially if System Restore is not reliable on your system.

Edit:  You can read the product page to comapre Home vs Pro but the major enhancement in Pro is a Custom Install option to support multi-boot or just partitioned drives.  Home will snapshot drive C: .During Custom Installation you are presented with a check list of partitions you wish to include in the snapshots.

Edit2:  I could not find any indication how long the 25% discount will be in effect.  All I can say is it worked today.  :)

Edit3:  The forums for this software may be found here:
http://community.hor...zondatasys.com/forum

Edit4:  One last bit of info.  I made cursory test of the bootup menu.  I hit the Home key when  prompted on boot and made a snapshot, and on another boot, I restored a snapshot.  It all seems to have gone well.  It is a relief to have a restore capability without having to plug in my USB stick.  :)

Fabric is more expensive and harder to clean. So it seems logical it's for cost/practical/functional reasons. But now I'm intrigued about fabric earphone covers...

Hehe.

- Oshyan

Just what I need.  $18 ear pad covers for my $5 Koss headphones.  heh  The weird thing is the Koss earbuds I got for $4 sound much better.  The Koss headphones have a flat sound that distorts if I enable "full sound" on my MP3 player.  The Koss earbuds handle it with no side effects.

The headphones are good for online streaming.  Like listening to the Patriots football game yesterday.  Full stereo is not important and it is more convenient to pull them off and hang them around the neck than trying to avoid tangling the buds.

I find it very odd that fabric over-ear headphones are so hard to find. They are far more comfortable. Like you say -- even with A/C.

I don't think I've ever seen the fabric kind.  One would think another feature could be a fastener so that you could remove the fabric covers and wash them.  Ears do get nasty pretty quickly.  Especially if the ear wax is from somebody else.  (How do you spell eeeeuuuooooo?)

Woody Leonhard has been chronicling the development of a tool to stop Windows 10 "upgrades" in his InfoWorld blog.

I haven't tried it -- I don't trust Windows Update, so it has always been turned off on all my systems, but I would trust Woody's recommendation.

I see the potential for a "vending machine makers vs slug minters" viscous circle.  We will have turn off tool/countermeasure cycles.  Every Tueday there will be a new countermeasure.  Every Friday the turn off tool will be, shall we say, Updated?   Heh heh heh

Plastic (or leather) gets hot and sweaty.

I had a nice pair of Sony headphones that spent years in the pouch in the drawer for that reason.  I only broke them out when I wanted to blast my stereo in the early AM.  Even with the A/C on my ears got itchy.

I have mixed feelings.  I can understand the frustration of the developer.  The only software I ever tried to sell I saw cracks of it on the web as soon as two people had a cooy with the product key(if you classify a crack as someone just publishing the key or including it with the download. It was kind of an experiment.  Not a thorough attempt at copy protection.)  But wouldn't it be awful if the developer got a reputation as a lousy programmer if people thought these were genuine bugs?

OTOH when software has been completely abandoned for years and there is no way to buy a legitimate key, is it a public service to patch it and upload?  At least in US copyright law I think there is some stipulation that the copyright holder must take some measure to protect the copyright.  Not responding to many inquiries over time and not protesting the patch could well be considered abandoning the rights.

Shades of gray and line drawing is rarely easy I guess.  :)

Does that make sense?

I get it.  Thanks for the details.  I don't have a smart phone so a streaming deal like that does not work as well for me.  I still use my trusty rusty Philips MP3 Player.  I don't like to keep earbuds in for very long.  Perhaps that's why I haven't worn the player out yet.  :D

17 hours and change left on
Lazesoft Recovery Suite Pro 4.1

at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

I don't have a guinea pig machine to test the software with.  But I did make a bootable USB stick with the software.  I targeted Windows 8.0 x64 when making the stick.  It successfully booted and displayed the recovery suite without having to set my BIOS to CSM mode.  It used WinPE 8 to make the stick.  The only quirk I noticed was it did not get the screen res right.  It looked like it used a 4:3 resolution instead of the 16:9 of the Laptop.  But it came up and responded when I hit the Reboot Button in the suite.

If you do not have a recovery boot disc/usb it may be worth getting as it claims boot failure recovery, unformat and password blanking features.  So if a family member gives you an old Laptop or desktop PC but they can't remember their password you should be able to use it with this.

Apparently it also has the option to create a Linux based boot cd/stick.

If anyone has an expendable PC perhaps they will give it a test drive?   :)

The entire USB stick prep with WinPE download took about 15 minutes.
So far only Macrium Reflect and this program have been able to create a boot stick that did not require me to enable CSM mode.  That it does that correctly is a good sign.

@IainB  Jacket I enjoyed thoroughly.  I watched it a few times.  That was the film that made me aware of Adrien Brody.  Just on looks he doesn't create much of an impression.  But he has skills.

A simpler approach may be
Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. ClipSave := ClipboardAll
  2. ; do whatever then
  3. Clipboard := ClipSave

Images are shown in the forum at over 100% size when using [ Invalid Attachment ]. This leads to slightly unfocused images.

Tangentially, will it ever be possible to just paste an image into the editor applet thingy?  It is just so much easier on sites that have this capability.  Control c here then Control v there and it's done.

But that was the "What if?".
What if:
  • You were going to kill your own girlfriend;
  • You could only go back in time;
  • You couldn't fix it for yourself (too many impossible anomalies);
  • But you maybe could fix it for yourself in another, separate time-stream?

The hero was smart enough to seek the advice of other thinkers/scientists and, despite his efforts to the contrary, he realised that it was an impossible objective to fix it for himself. So he changed the objective and worked within the constraints of inter-dimensional time-travel.
I thought that was pretty nifty SF.

To me someone who went to all that effort, like never sleeping in how many hours while ducking under the floorboard again and again to go back in time 12 hours at a time, would at least have tried one or two things rather than just accepting the limitation of time travel direction.  For example, he never even tries lying under the floor face down to see if that moves him in the opposite direction.

Also what happens to all these twins he has flying around?  Do they create a softball team of clones?  Like Joe Shmoe playing all 9 positions and managing versus the high school girl's softball team?  :)

Google Play Music subscription (unlimited streaming music)

A bit tangential but does this service allow you to download and un-drm the content?  It is not always convenient to be connect to listen to a tune.  One thing that gets old early is paying for the same tunes multiple times just because it is on a different medium(or the same medium but processed with a few more bits that the last time it was processed and rerecorded.)

Watched this excellent free movie online on YouTube, a couple of nights back: "41" (2012)
- Full Movie - 1080p - Time Travel Film PG13

I finally got to it.  Like Primer it figured out a way to avoid spending on special effects.  But Primer was more fun for techies.  You had to watch it a few times to pick up the conversation and the references to the physics involved etc..

In this flick the hole to the past is just there.

Spoiler
Not to give the plot away, I was a bit disappointed that the resolution turned out to be that one copy of the protagonist was satisfied to sacrifice his own life experience to make sure another copy of himself found happiness.  It seems a bit unlikely as who just volunteers to live a crummy life just so his twin brother can have it made in the shade?  But Time Travel stuff is always interesting.

...And ^they call piracy theft. Ha!

My father always said "the best defense is a good offense."  There ain't much more offensive on the net than the DMCA.  :)  I think it inevitable that each internet access, be it only an ack, nack, or ping, will mean KaChing to the providers.  Different interactions will be charged at different rates.  A handshake to connect will be cheaper than an RPC etc..  But once it is all in the cloud you will pay for every packet.  Even worse you won't be able to scream bloody murder if you are behind on your breathable air payments.  Every thought you think every drop you drink they'll be chargin' you!!
