General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 7 — first impressions
« Last post by Innuendo on November 30, 2009, 03:32 PM »
Convenient, but a bad idea anyway. It was covered in another thread.

Agreed, but I don't use that Norton program nor am I one of those people who think UAC is bad. First thing I do after installing Windows 7 is go to the Control Panel & crank UAC up to max.

Now *there* is a setting that has the wrong default value.

Why should there be a prompt to run a spyware scanner? How is it useful?

All Windows knows is that something (your spyware scanner) is trying to get direct access to your hard drive & registry. Windows does know that lots of malicious programs try to do the same thing. Windows, unfortunately, cannot differentiate between good programs and bad programs. It's near impossible to do.

However, Norton was working on a UAC white-list app that would allow one to okay a UAC prompt once & then have the system remember that app as being okay & never prompting again. I haven't heard anything about that program lately, though.

I did that of course, and Media Player was still launching. I've had to select individual file extensions and remap them one by one. Like I said, this could be unintended.

Lots of programs had this problem when Vista first came out, but the problem went away once the programs were updated to change the file associations the right way. Are you using the latest version of VLC? You may need to upgrade.

Ack! Peek my head in here & it looks like Tomos has already posted for me. ;)

In my opinion, a tagging program should make one's life easier by being able to reach out over the internet & grab metadata from services such as Discogs, Amazon, FreeDB, MusicBrainz, MusicIP, and others. The 'problem' with these services is that they aren't all-knowing. A lot of times you will search their databases & find that your preferred service does not have the album you are looking for.

The good tagging programs will allow you to use data from 3, 4, or more services. Unfortunately, a lot of tagging programs will only contact Amazon or FreeDB for info.

At one time I was going to post a crash course like tomos was requesting, but abandoned the effort when I realized that it was going to be longer than this thread already is.

Whoever still says UAC is a good idea... I just cannot see what you see. Roughly half the shareware apps I use raise the UAC warning on launch - a huge annoyance.

Then you need to upgrade roughly half of the shareware apps you use. Properly written apps should not bring forth a UAC prompt unless they are a system utility (spyware scanner, defragger, etc.). I have UAC set on high and rarely see UAC prompts.

But that's nothing. You can't even rename a desktop icon without an "As administrator" confirmation, even though the logged-in user *is* an administrator.

I don't experience that on my machine, but maybe it's because I have the desktop pointing to my D: drive.

And while I'm at it, what happened to the system tray? Everything is hidden by default there. It may look nicer that way, but is less useful, because tray icons often indicate program state, and it's also harmful, because it makes it easier for vendors to cram your system with autostart applications that run in the tray, and now most users won't even see them, ever.

You have the power to customize which system tray icons are shown all the time and which ones are hidden all the time. It's a great feature.

All the stupid, ugly, useless, non-standard applications that install with hardware drivers, all the "start Java faster", "Adobe cr*p updater" little pieces of trash you want to disable as soon as you can, will now run unobstructed on most computers.

It's been my experience that with most computer users it doesn't matter if the little pieces of trash are hidden or not. They run obstructed whether they are visible or not.

Ive managed to open the Device Manager a couple of times, but I still can't remember where it is. And am I the only one enraged by the Control Panel design?

Do what I do and configure the Control Panel to show as a menu rather than a link on the start menu & all the confusion will melt away.

In "Default programs", all the file associations grabbed by Windows Media Player are grayed out and can't be changed (to the VLC player, say). The workaround seems to be to manually change association for each individual file extension, which is somewhat arduous. I hope this is a bug.

If you use the file association method inside VLC you'll accomplish your task a lot easier.

I like the clickable breadcrumbs in Explorer windows (it took MS how many years to "invent" those?), but where is the "Up" button? No "Up" button, so now the most common navigational operation requires at least two careful clicks, instead of just one - unless there's some other way I haven't noticed.

Hit Backspace.

Then in your case I'd go for the ATI solution. Matrox is a very eccentric company & has very eccentric drivers.

At least with an ATI solution you are going to get access to the Catalyst drivers which release an WHQL set of drivers every month.

I am not sure about export laws for shipping to other countries so I can't ship anywhere except the US.

There aren't any export laws against shipping this anywhere. However, where you live is going to determine who can make use of your game. Being a video game it's subject to the whole NTSC/PAL thing. If you are in the U.S. then only someone who owns an NTSC XBox is going to be able to use it.

Innuendo, I haven't tried d'peg! in probably 3-4 years--you had to pick one that I don't actually have in my collection. :P

Someone's got to push your obsession to ever greater heights & extremes! ;)

Me, too. Agent is a one of a kind program & there'll probably never be anything written like it ever again due to the change in how the internet works.

Living Room / Re: looking for an old science-fiction movie

In that respect it's pretty much ahead of almost all the recent movies which leave you scratching your head and going, "Wait, now just where did those guys come from and what the hell have they got to do with this?"

That's what made it a cult classic. It was a movie with a thought-out plot. There are a couple plot holes, but nothing compared to a lot of today's movies.

I could have, (as you say Innuendo) downloaded it from loads of other sites....

It's because of this behavior anymore that when it comes to certain software products from certain companies looking on the company web site for a download is last place I'll look.

EDIT: Fixed atrocious quoting.

Lifeforce was a trippy movie on so many levels. Don't try to work out the intricate plot-line of the vampire' origins as there's so much detail it'll make your head hurt.

It's a cult classic, though, every fan of vampire movies should see it at least once.

If I want some music, I will have to get it from my ISP, (for "free", as part of my contract), as drm encoded 192 kbps wma files.

That's pretty cool you can get music for 'free' like that. For someone like you a program like this makes perfect sense, but you are the first person I have ever heard of that has an ISP deal like that so I imagine such a thing is uncommon.

As for radio streams, a lot of them are 90 kbps streams so I can see listening to them to discover new music I really can't see keeping the recordings around long term...maybe just long enough to replace it with a better copy.

Although I suspect in the case of April they are a bit careful because to them it does not look like fraud, just an "honest" mistake around exchange rates - and a "proper" company on the other side.

You mean Carol and not April, yes?

And everyone knows it's impossible for a person to buy a new computer or a new operating system, whether it be online or at a brick & mortar store, when they have both hands occupied trying to remove the large stick from their butt. :)

I haven't seen this one discussed in the thread yet & I used to use it a long time ago. I was wondering your opinion, sajman, on d'peg! (yeah, the exclamation point is part of the name)? Doesn't seem to have been updated in quite a while, but what I remember of it the program wasn't bad & had quite a few features.

You can get it at http://somewareonthe.net or http://www.gotdupes.com .

Yeah, every company's privacy policy is worded like that. It's standard boilerplate anymore.

As for my privacy, when I'm plugging in personal data for a trial software download for some weird reason it always comes out as being Elvis Aaron Presley's personal information. :)

And if it is one of those 'clever' sites that only emails you a download link you can usually circumvent the whole ordeal altogether and get the trial software off of BetaNews or Softpedia or FileHippo.

Well, most older laptop graphics chipsets blow chunks no matter what OS you are running them under.

And....if your new graphics card didn't perform a lot better than a 2 year old model I would have been very surprised. :)

Despite an annoying UI, this is a pretty good utility.

I was thinking the same thing. Looks like a UI from 1997.

If you need SigmaTel Drivers for Win7 try this link http://www.windows7u...SigmaTelDrivers.html

Never heard of www.windows7update.com so thought I'd check it out. The page referenced gives a link to Microsoft's web site. I was using Firefox so I got an error message that I needed to be using IE8.

Fair enough...so I tried through IE8 & that link just leads to the Microsoft Update Catalog & returns 1,000 search results which none on the first page were what the OP needs.

I think 40hz has the right answer.

Developer's Corner / Re: Apple's App Store Mistake
« Last post by Innuendo on November 25, 2009, 09:15 AM »
I see the point in this, but it's not like having a non-closed platform makes it less stable on the hardware it's designed for - just slap on a "no warranty/support if used on 3rd party hardware", and the hackers would be happy.

A noble thought, but will never happen while Steve Jobs is at the helm of Apple. If his closed platform were to become open then he'd lose some of the control he'd have over his Apple world & his Apple vision.

I think everyone who knows anything at all about Steve Jobs knows that he's not going to give up one iota of control over anything.

so, where is the script for updating my scripts?  :tellme:

- without such a script feature, I cannot be too impressed with Greasemonkey itself.

Each script author is responsible for including code in their script for auto-updating. I have a couple scripts I run that auto-update themselves, but most do not.

My threads about the editor were removed and I was banned without warning in their fake web forum that no one uses anyway.  I've never been banned from any forum and I didn't even really do anything wrong, just criticize like I always do.  Anyway, it's still a great program, whatever.

Then use the usenet method to post to their 'mailing list.'

Hmmm, the licensing terms are very restrictive, so be sure to backup the game and do not install it too much :D

Restricted to 10 activations between 2 computers. Yeah...if I hadn't gotten it free I'd be demanding a refund.

It's still a very good game for those with warped senses of humor.

I wish they would get out of their little mailing-list world and open up to hearing the comments of their other users.

Mailing list world? Sure, accessing their support is accessible through a mailing list, but it's far from the only way. You can also access the same channel through the web & through usenet. No other company has so many ways to tap into their support channel.
1325
I guess that's because Usenet has become fringe, unfortunately.

Usenet has never been popular, but I wouldn't call that unfortunate at all. Keeps the riff-raff out.  ;D
