Oh yes...I can see the logic there.....

There is no logic in this security system. It was a knee jerk reaction and a chance for some profitable corruption, on the part of the local school board (a school board member has a relative that works for the company that was paid to set this whole thing up).

But enough about this basement worthy topic. Back to the jokes!

I forgot to wrap that in a <sarcasm> tag lmao...and...if we are completely honest....that whole scenario sounds like a joke anyway...so it fits right in here haha!

When her co-workers retrieved their phones to try to call her, they found that she had been frantically trying to call and text people to come help her.

Um... Why not call someone outside of the school to come help? :-\

This is the first school in the US with a security system like this.

Calling someone outside the school would be like calling someone in another country. What could they possibly do to help you?

Because getting into that school is like trying to break into the Pentagon, and getting out is like trying to escape from a maximum security prison, if you are not a student or employee with a key card. And even then, it's tough, as you can see from this incident.

Not even a parent can get in there. The school is on constant high security lock down.

I would hate to think what it would be like if they switched it to maximum security lock down (which is supposed to be done if there is a shooter in the school, which could only be an employee or student, with the way it's all set up), where they deactivate all cards so nobody can move from room to room, and nobody gets in or out, even if they have a card.

Oh yes...I can see the logic there.......There is a shooter in a room with 50 people...so let's lock the fucking doors so the people can't escape and end up making the shooter more and more pissed off so they probably end up doing way more harm than (s)he could have otherwise done...

As some of you may know, I used to do some Tech News here at DC, but as the days went on, time got a little more constrained and real life slowly took over.  However...even though I can't promise a full time thing, what I can promise, is one for you right now!!

So...Here goes!

Windowless Planes Offer Passengers Spectacular Panoramic Views:

An international design agency has come up with an intriguing and innovative new aviation concept that has won them a prestigious award - windowless jets.

Technicon Design’s idea is not to ruin your views while cruising through the air, but to enhance them. This would be achieved by filming the exterior environment and displaying it on inside surfaces throughout the cabin. Rather than being restricted to a small window, passengers would experience a spectacular panoramic views of the world. Of course, it would also be possible to display other things on the screen besides the sky, such as movies.

While this may sound gimmicky, removing windows has the added benefit of weight reduction and would also simplify plane construction. It would also allow greater flexibility when designing the interior of the plane.

Hacking our ears: how Dolby is bringing Atmos into the home:

Since Dolby Atmos arrived on the cinema scene in 2012, the technology has set a precedent for movie sound.

Heart failure patients healthier after ear stimulation:

Heart failure patients could live healthier lives by having nerves in their ears stimulated with a portable Tens machine.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (Tens) machines are commonly used to alleviate back pain and are even used during labour. Now a team from the University of Leeds wants to adapt it to tackle health problems that are impacted by changes in the sympathetic nervous system, including heart disease and hypertension. The technique works by altering the signals that can make a heart beat too hard, by stimulating the vagus nerve.

Hackers easily seize control of nearly 100 traffic lights:

Taking over a city's intersections and making all the lights green to cause chaos is a pretty bog-standard Evil Techno Bad Guy tactic on TV and in movies, but according to a research team at the University of Michigan, doing it in real life is within the realm of anyone with a laptop and the right kind of radio. In a paper published this month, the researchers describe how they very simply and very quickly seized control of an entire system of almost 100 intersections in an unnamed Michigan city from a single ingress point.

Giant Crack Appears In Earth In Mexico:

Video footage has emerged of a kilometre-long crack thought to have been triggered by an underground stream in northwest Mexico.

The eight-metre (26ft) deep trench opened up last week and severed Highway 26 between Hermosillo and the coast.

Captured by Hermosillo Desde El Cielo, the footage was shot by a drone flying along the length of the trench, which is up to five metres (16ft) across.

Personally, every Resume/CV I send out is tailored to that industry, which means I can also make sure that I only include jobs relevant to that sector on it.

In regards to leaving gaps in work history...I actually just lie there...I have no intention of asking those companies for references so I simply extend the dates a little bit so they don't look like I was working for X months, then unemployed for X months :P

Chrome browser has a print to PDF function that I use to capture web sites.  Open Office/Libra Office has the function built in. CutePDF writer works great too for everything else.

This is for more generic PDF creation...Not entirely sure who it is aimed at in specific but I imagine it is very helpful for those who just want to hit the print button rather than hoping software X has the feature built in.

Honestly though...we all know our information is being bought, linked, sold, auctioned, taken apart, put back together, and whatever else...life is life

IMHO, acquiescence and capitulation are no way to go through life. Whether or not the above is true, we don't need to accept it. Or tolerate it either. Just sayin'  ;)

Totally agreed.  And just telling someone 'don't use it then', is not an acceptable alternative.  Market pressure is a very real thing.

We choose to do these things in the full knowledge of what the outcome is going to be...However, we DO have a choice...and that choice is yours to make.

You know the dangers of driving...but most people do it anyway, and there are options there if you choose not to...
You know the dangers of flying....but most people still do...yet again, there are other options...

Facebook isn't the be all and end all of civilization as we know it...there are other ways and means to stay in touch with that girl you once met at that bar you don't remember the name of in the town you forgot you ever visited...;)

Although I do agree that Facebook could be a little more VISIBLE about what they do (Although, it is pretty easy to find the information for those who know where to look or are willing to dig a little deeper)...however...Like I said above...Facebook isn't the problem here...Android Permissions are...

How many of you guys here have downloaded something for your phone that..say...lets you edit images you have taken, or apply filters to your photos...or have a custom launcher...or have a completely custom rom on it like Cyanogenmod?...All of those things have permission based issues that are EXACTLY the same as Facebook...Cyanogenmod obviously has some differences being a complete overhaul of Android but again..who really knows what the hell is going on there?

If you want your private information to stay private...don't share it...pretty simple really...I have only ever shared online, the information about myself that I couldn't care less who knows about me...and like I have said many times before...if people like Facebook have figured out a way to make money from that information...good for them!  I only hope that one day I figure out how the hell knowing that I enjoy a Coffee in the morning and I have a dislike for anything from The Daily Mail; is worth money!

We all use personal computers and we all take them for granted in our everyday lives. It’s easy to forget that PCs have only been around for a couple of decades, and initially were nowhere near the powerhouses we have on our desks today.

For example, did you know that the first “portable” computer weighed 25 kg (55 lb) and cost close to $20,000, that the first laser printer was big enough to fill up most of a room, or that you basically had to build the first Apple computer yourself?

This article takes a look at the time when the computer equipment we now take for granted was invented and what it looked like back then.

The first computer mouse
The first computer mouse was invented in 1963 by Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute. (He is also one of the inventors of hypertext.) The first mouse used two wheels positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other to keep track of the movement (see picture below). The ball mouse wasn’t invented until 1972, and the optical mouse was invented circa 1980 although it didn’t come to popular use until much later.

Douglas Engelbart never received any royalties for his invention and his patent had run out by the time the mouse became commonplace in the era of home PCs.

What’s the big deal? Speed. Speed and
throughput are the really big deals.
And
while promises of Gigabit speeds may
seem overstated – or maybe unnecessary
right this minute – HD streaming media
and real-time video are becoming
commonplace, meaning it won’t be long
before you need that extra oomph.

One of our Technibble forum members, PcTek9, and a handful of other Technibble members have compiled a large list of CDs for various computer repair tasks. In this list, the following types of CD are available for download: Antivirus Boot CDs, Recovery Disks, Hardware Diagnostic Boot CDs, Network Testing/Monitoring, Data Recovery Boot CDs and Special Purpose CDs.

Some of these are free to download, some are not. Be sure to read the EULA for the CD’s you download and the applications you use to make sure you are allowed to use them in the manner you plan to use them in. Many of the CDs contain a variety of different programs and some of the applications are free to use as you please, but some of them disallow commercial use. So be sure to read and abide by the EULA for whatever you use.

What’s the best PDF printer for Windows? We checked 7 of the most popular options to find out.
It’s kind of shocking that printing in Windows 8 doesn’t come with a PDF option; Mac and Linux users have had this by default for years. Windows users still need dedicated software, and it’s all of varying quality.

PDF printers let you save any file you can print as a PDF, meaning that any computer on Earth can open it without much trouble. Because these programs disguise themselves as regular printers, you can use them to create a PDF file in any program that lets you print. We’ve shown you how to print to PDF on Windows 8, but such software is by no means new: you can use it on any version of Windows.
