Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Dim the taskbar
« Last post by brotherS on February 26, 2006, 03:15 AM »
Doesn't work here :(

It reloads the taskbar and I see the slider window (can also move the slider), but nothing changes.

I wonder if it would be useful or even practical to combine the typical heirarchical system with the labeling system somehow?  Or have both options available in the same program?  Does anyone think that's even possible, without causing mass confusion, or a breakdown of the organizational system?
Possible? I think so...
Useful? Not sure... but then it's never easy to come up with something that's new *and* working perfectly at the same time :)

brotherS: so sorrry for the type-o.  I enjoy your postings a lot.  I would hate to think I havve offended you :)

WinXp only
:(
Please support Windows 2000 too, when it comes to transparency and stuff both OS are quite similar.

https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2553.0 made me think about this related idea. I saw this being an option of bigger (and not free) programs. This Coding Snack should just have an enable/disable option and some way to set a value (enter field/slider?) for the transparency.

For those of you who can't imagine what it would look like:

General Software Discussion / Re: General brainstorming for Note-taking software
« Last post by brotherS on February 25, 2006, 12:54 PM »
The whole mind mapping/note taking started me thinking about what I really want out of this type of software.
I think I want topic association vs. categories.  The difference is subtle.

To me categories are centered around database thinking and the need to make binary (true/false) relationships between an item and a category.  While I understand this need, my brain tends to assocate items with a topic (category) on a graduated scale.  I'm not sure how you develop an interface that let's you do that easily.
When I read this quoted text I immediately had to think about Google Mail! Anyone else?
Not sure if you are a user yet - they dropped the "put everything in its own folder" principle (that had been around for more than a decade) to come up with labels. You could just put several labels on an email, I like it a lot!

Btw, my nick is still brotherS :D

Wow, AWESOME find! I immediately installed and tested it, and while it's not perfect (but hey, it's freeware!) I was able to create my first digital mind map without reading any instructions!

I really don't like mind maps on paper, there it's way harder to fit in something later ;)

If anyone here never heard of mind mapping before, check the video on http://www.mindjet.c...r_pro6/quicktour.php (several languages available) or read about it on http://en.wikipedia....rg/wiki/Mind_Mapping

If you're intrigued, read the New York Times review at the bottom of the page for more info about these remarkable pictures.
Nice article! Too bad the images on the site aren't high-res, you can't really see much of the details :(

Reminds me of an interview I heard, many years ago, of a man who had sheds full of journals, floor to ceiling.  He started recording his daily activities and got ever more detailed.  Soon he was reporting on the number of steps he took to get to the refrigerator, the number of peas on his plate, the lint on his shirt, etc.  He actually didn't have time to "do" anything because he was so busy recording every detail of what was happening and these activities interfered.  Funnily enough, he seemed quite happy with his life.
Hmm, that reminds me of one (rich) guy who just archives his complete living room every x years, including all the furniture and electronic stuff (including PC). He just buys everything new and starts from there - don't know if he copies the data, but whether or not that's a strange and cool idea too - and leaves much more time for living...

:D

Haha!  ;D

Looks a bit fake to me (I *hope* it's fake!), the best part is when he says "I don't need help!" :D

:huh:

That's an evil spike if I ever saw one!

I just fulfilled my own request I came up with an hour earlier ;D

Since I don't reboot my almost perfectly healthy Windows 2000 too often and also don't want to run an app 24/7 just to sync my system time I came up with this script, which uses http://www.arachnoid.com/abouttime/ to do the job at night - AboutTime starts, syncs, and quits after a few seconds.

I love AutoHotkey doing stuff for me while I sleep! :D

As always, feel free to comment and improve it!

I guess this works until those spam bots are trained to ignore pages that mention "spam" and thousands of emails on them ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: NeoMem organiser update
« Last post by brotherS on February 23, 2006, 05:05 AM »
Btw, I don't use organizer software to store simple text information. I just save each document in a special folder that also has a few subfolders.

Reason why: this way I can use Locate (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1385.0) to find what I'm searching for, and if that doesn't work (happens rarely) I can use the Google Desktop Search for a quick full text search.

Thanks, both of you!

I'm now using AutoHotkey to do the complete job. This script defrags the file and shows the result in your standard editor:

:*b0:.defrag::
InputBox, Defragpath, Defrag, enter full path of the file to defrag, ,420, 118
RunWait, %comspec% /c Contig -q "%Defragpath%" > summary.txt, C:\Programme\Contig Defrag\
Run, C:\Programme\Contig Defrag\summary.txt
return

Finished Programs / DONE: AutoHotkeyUpdateChecker
« Last post by brotherS on February 21, 2006, 12:40 PM »
Hi,

I was told about a really great idea - a tiny script to automatically check for new versions of AutoHotkey!

From http://s89775182.onl...um/viewtopic.php?t=8 :
;---2005-10-16 garry, check AutoHotKey for new version -------------
F1=%A_ScriptDir%\AHKURL.TXT
A=%A_AHKVERSION%
URLDownloadToFile,http://www.autohotkey.com,%F1%
I=0
Loop
{
        I+=1
        FileReadLine, line, %F1%, %i%
        if ErrorLevel <> 0
        exitApp
   IfInString,line,The latest version is
        {
   stringmid,BA,LINE,25,18
        GOTO A2
        }
}
A2:
FileDelete,%F1%
B1=%BA%
I=0
loop,parse,B1,`
{
   Transform,B2,ASC,%A_LOOPFIELD%
   I+=1
   if B2<46
   GOTO A3
   if B2>57
   GOTO A3
}
A3:
stringmid,B,B1,1,I-1
if A<>%B%
{
msgbox,(Changed) Your existing version is=%A%, Actual version is=%B%
run,http://www.autohotkey.com/download
ExitApp
}
else
{
msgbox,(Equal) Your existing version is=%A%, Actual version is=%B%
MsgBox, 4, , Start AHK Forum?
IfMsgBox,No
return
Else
Run,http://www.autohotkey.com/forum
ExitApp
}
I'm sure someone in here could even optimize that? To maybe let it auto-check at a given interval, add some other stuff, ...?

General Software Discussion / Re: Clipboard manager
« Last post by brotherS on February 21, 2006, 06:22 AM »
Cross-quote:
My favorite Clipboard Manager ArsClip (just a 860 KB exe) offers an extra hotkey for pasting as plain text.

Example configuration:
CTRL + V = Paste (normal)
WIN + V = Paste as plain text

Some other features:
  • Multiple permanent items groups
  • Picture, RichText, File Copy, Unicode, HTML support
  • Keypress emulation
  • Form Mode for pasting multiple fields
  • Highly configurable

I'm using ClipX too, but I'm not 100% satisfied anymore, sometimes it does act up on my PC :( I wonder how ArsClip compares to ClipX (and maybe others)?

Maybe there's even anyone up to a "2006 clipboard managers" (mini-)review? :)
1323
Thanks, sounds easy :)

Edit: I killed and restarted Explorer.exe, but I seem to reboot Windows to activate that change to "send it" :(
1324
Hmm, "send to" pops up a list of lots of folders and files here, I thought my suggestion would be a cleaner solution. I don't mind having one more item in there, but if you have an easy "send to" solution, I'm willing to test that too.

Thanks :)

Hi!

Could anyone please code something so I could use http://www.sysintern...tilities/Contig.html by simply right-clicking a file and choosing "Defrag with Contig" from the context menu?

Right-now I'm using the Power Defragmenter GUI for Contig but would like a faster approach to defrag single files.
