As much as I would like to have some measure of sympathy for the guy, I have to agree; he brought all this on himself by acting like an ass, no questions.
Stressed or not, you don't speak like this to a paying customer.
Ever.
IMO, if this hadn't gotten to the internet, then the folks who hired him would have eventually caught on and canned the guy, though admittedly not as quickly and not as thorough ass-whuppin' in the process.

That said, kudos to the original 'Dave' who politely requested that folks cut him some slack (after all, all he wanted was the controllers he ordered).

P.S. The memes are still rolling in...

@IainB:
Awesome, and solidly relevant.
The Five Easy Steps are largely why I'm being let go from the company I'm at.
The business they are running is operating in a slowly dying market, and though they are quick to take up new technologies to provide relevant services to existing customers, they are panicking over a slippery bottom line, firing when training would take too much effort, and moving managers into areas where they have no expertise but management.

If I ever work up the chutzpah to start a business, that's getting printed poster size, framed and put on the wall opposite my desk.

...Customer service of old is gone were in a new generation now...

But can anyone say he's wrong there? Perhaps he should be hanged for honesty. :P

As of the end of this month, I am going to be on a SERIOUS job hunt.
Details aside, as a consequence I have talked to more than a few customer service folks, and I can tell you good old-fashioned customer service isn't dead, in fact it's in more demand than ever, especially in light of the "new generation" Mr. Christoforo speaks of.

If he wasn't president/CEO/Head Honcho, he'd have been fired after the first email with that tone.
Guaranteed.

Not hard, actually... but this guy shows how it's done.

First, be an arrogant tool with a marketing company.
Then, deliver product late and react like an asshat when a customer calls you on it.
Finally, watch your world crumble before your eyes when that customer takes to his favorite forum with the emails.

If you have the domain and it's only for email, why not host it yourself?
Spare box, home email server software (hmailserver, Axigen, Zimbra, et al.) an ISP that won't mind a bit of extra traffic (that part might get sticky, many ISP's don't like you serving...), and Voila!

Downside is, you are your own customer service at that point, much easier to pay somebody to do the housekeeping for you.
Just a thought...

Living Room / Re: Apple, I hate you (again) and the web design community too
« Last post by Edvard on December 18, 2011, 02:02 AM »
As far as I've been able to ascertain, there IS a standard which started with the HTML standardw written long ago by Tim Berners-Lee and Dan Connolly, and now maintained by the IETF and W3C.

Problem (as I see it) is two-fold (well, three...);
1 - The original HTML standard was built from the ground up to be extended and improved by the people who used and programmed for it:
...the first proposal for an HTML specification...was notable for its acknowledgement of the NCSA Mosaic browser's custom tag for embedding in-line images, reflecting the IETF's philosophy of basing standards on successful prototypes.
(emphasis mine)
2 - (or 1A) Which I'm sure inspired Microsoft to inject their own ways and means into their Internet Explorer product, hoping to force new standards, which they could sell programming tools for (see what they did thar?).
3 - Which led to other browsers and their sponsors doing the same, no-longer-useful features being abandoned as the standard evolved (but left in coding tools and websites to languish for years to come), standards being incompletely supported (safari only complying with  with 6 of the HTML5 standards, IE8 leaving out support for the <abbr> tag, among others), new elements like Javascript and Flash (and Microsoft's 'me too' Silverlight) simply making up their own rules as they went along, etc. ad nauseum...

So, yes, blame everyone:
Web designers who rely on scripts and such more than they need to.
Browser makers who don't implement complete standards, and inject new stuff as they see fit.
The architects of the standards themselves who left Pandora's box a little too open from the beginning.

:two: - flavored with a grain of salt

P.S. As far as Apple not even implementing their own stuff correctly... wow, that's quite a facepalm.

Banks... <shudder>
My default password scheme is a key-pattern mix of uppercase/lowercase numbers/special characters based on something in the name of the website I'm accessing (a Dvorak keyboard would seriously screw my world).
My bank doesn't allow special characters
IBM Developerworks only allows special characters @#$%&*   IBM!!
The government jobs website allows special characters, but only certain ones, and it doesn't say which ones.  :'(
There's no such thing as a paper job application any more, so I've had to sign up with a hundred websites, all of whom have differing password requirements (yeah, identity theft nightmare waiting to happen, but hey, I'm just a laid off schmoe begging for a spot on the payroll, what do they care?).

So, yeah, something needs to be done about the current username/password thing.
I'm all for whatever encrypted handshake thingamabob that needs to happen to make ID theft harder, but after reading everything I can stand about electronic security, I've concluded that your info is only as secure as the server it's stored on.

@ Carol:
I got my Clip used from someone who owned it for about a year and a half before I got it so it's been 3+ years since I got it and I've used it heavily.
On a full charge, it'll give me a solid 7+ hours before the battery takes a nose dive (once it gets down to 25% capacity, it drains rather quickly), and a little less (maybe 5+) if I'm listening really loud or with lots of bass.
The battery has a 400mAh and Sansa claims a fresh unit has a 14-hour capacity, although I'm sure that's a conservative estimate.

Point is, if your experience is anything like mine, (luck of the draw, perhaps?) it's unlikely you'll be needing to replace the battery unless you're looking to hold on to it for more than 5 years, at which point, I would expect battery capacity to go south no matter what it's made of.

@Cloq:
Awesome! I've had to re-solder the battery wires on my Clip twice just because it bangs around in my pocket so much, but never replaced it.
Good to know it is possible, but I was pretty paranoid every time I had to crack the case open; plastic snap brackets just aren't as robust as proper fasteners.
The post by "ncuxanam" in your second link has a link to the proper replacement, BTW.

Where to find free images for your website or blog may be a challenging task if you don't know where to look. And even if you find such images, a million questions come to mind: are the images copyrighted? May I use them on a product I want to sell? Do I need to credit the photographer? In this MasterNewMedia guide I would like to help you by sharing a) some recommendations for all independent web publishers out there and b) a list of the best free and paid image libraries available on the Internet.

Living Room / Community outsourcing... Awesome idea
« Last post by Edvard on December 08, 2011, 01:48 PM »
So I'm going to be laid off at the end of this month, and I've come to the conclusion that short-term contracting is my best bet in this economy until I can rack up a few certs.
As experienced as I am with many things, I don't have any real marketable skills or fancy pieces of paper to impress potential employers on places like ODesk or Guru.com, BUT...

Looky what I found...   :tellme:

TaskRabbit
http://www.taskrabbit.com

taskrabbit.png

Get just about anything done by safe, reliable, awesome people.
...
1. Post a Task
It’s free to post a Task! Include all the necessary info for the TaskRabbit to do the job.
2. TaskRabbits make offers
The background-checked TaskRabbit who makes the lowest bid will automatically be assigned and run your task.
3. Pay when Task is done
Pay the TaskRabbit conveniently online; no cash needed.
Fees run around 15%, and folks can get paid via check in the mail, or PayPal.
If you are a good TaskRabbit, you can gain reputation and do pretty well.
The top guy on there is making ~$5000 USD a month  :o
Too bad they're not in the Seattle area yet...   :(

DoMyStuff
http://www.domystuff.com

domystuff.gif

Too Much Stuff to Do? Not Enough Time? Let Other People Do Your Stuff!
...
The tasks you post can range from the mundane, such as mowing the lawn or picking up dry cleaning, to the extraordinary, such as arranging dinner with a celebrity or chartering a private jet. Don't limit yourself. Post anything you need done, and get back to living your life!

1. Post your day-to-day chores, errands, and other tasks that clutter your life
2. Choose the bidding duration for your task
3. Limit bidders based on location, rating, and more
4. Assistants bid to do your task
5. Review bids for your task and choose an assistant
6. Communicate with your assistant
7. Leave feedback for your assistant
Very similar with a feedback system and reputation building, and they have a private message board for communication between employers and bidders.
Says they charge a "small fee" to get contact information for the prospective employer.

Zaarly
http://www.zaarly.com

zaarly2.png

Zaarly is changing how the economy works. That's all... just a little global economic disruption.

Zaarly enables people to ask for anything from people nearby.
A simple idea; but when it takes root in a community, the impact is profound.
Buyers decide what they want and the price they want to pay and someone from the community makes it happen, creating a job and keeping money local.
Zaarly helps anyone invest directly into their local economy.
Zaarly seems more informal and kinda like an open market; stuff you want to buy or sell are mixed in with job offers.
They've got a mobile app, and you can sign up through Facebook.
They only charge a fee if you do a credit card transaction (10%) and they use PoundPay for all their transactions, though the Help says you can get paid via direct deposit or PayPal, or even cash from the buyer.

Neat ideas, I hope these catch on.
I like the idea of community-level economy building like this, and just like they say in the spam ads, I can set my own hours and work from home (more or less...).

Anyone interested in a program that would mark documents/files as templates then easily allow you to create new documents from these templates? It's more a interface gimmick than anything, but I noticed I never use the context menu > new menu and I also never reuse documents (always start from scratch) but it would be much more productive if I could base files off other files and have a nice list of templates to choose from.

Example:
New "Timesheet"
New "todo list"
New "meeting report"

etc.

Not sure how to do it in Windows 7, but up to XP, you could put files in c:\Windows\Shellnew folder (or anywhere else, for that matter...) and tweak the registry to point to it and label it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140333 (old info, I know, but it was valid up to XP).

In my experience, the stock Sansa firmware makes it's own internal database, and that's your only choice.
Malformed ID3 tags? Sorry, buddy, can't play 'em...
Everytime I added new music, it would detect it and update.

With RockBox, you have the choice of navigating by folder, playlist, or internal database that you have the choice of updating or not.

As far as updating while attached to your computer, I have no idea; never saw that.

This entire subject is just boggling.
The claims, the misinterpretations, the justifications, it's all too much, and I can't stand it.
Right or wrong, the EFSA could have issued a much clearer ruling that didn't patently invite ridicule.
Could they not see the ramifications?

Maybe folks should read the thing for themselves:

Actually, maybe the EU ought to just ban the stuff altogether:

Matrox has always made some pretty amazing multi-monitor stuff, from basic dual screen, to 3-screen surround gaming from one video card (box actually), to 4 and 6 screen Response Center systems and Control Workstations, to wall-of-monitors immersification.

Graphics performance consistently fell behind nVidia and ATI (that may have changed), but then again, who didn't?
... And why would you care when you have more display space than you can gawk at without moving your head?  :-*
