DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: WinKey Enhancement Project (WEP)
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 01, 2008, 08:37 AM »
Interesting read, f0dder! (omg.. and i lost this guy's conference at my univ this semester.. really dumb  :stars:)
I still think it's selfish though, and the default win+key shortcuts aren't useful anyway (except for win+l, which i've remaped to win+space :D).

1) WEP isn't the best abbreviation to use, since googling tends to bring up topics about this WEP.
True, i thought exactly the same.

2) <Win>+singlekey shortcuts are actually reserved for the operating system, so remapping them can clash with future windows versions.
I think it is a bit selfish of windows to reserve a modifier for himself and only use it for 3 or 4 shortcuts :P
I use the winkey for lots of stuff :)

justice: this same discussion made me go get more info on that site too.
Apparently, everything is saved online, you need to have an evernote account (which can be free and you get 40mb of bandwidth, or premium and you get 500mb). I'm not sure if it's replicated locally or not.
Still, yes, there's a desktop and mobile version, but they still need web. Unfortunately, there isn't much detail on the website, i think a better description would help.

If someone was able to try it and make us a mini-review, that'd be great :)

Dr.Windows / Re: how to make errors in dr.windows?
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 01, 2008, 06:16 AM »
The problem is that if you're saving in notepad, it always saves it as .txt.
What you have to do it save as .txt, and then change the extension of the file itself in windows explorer.

Interesting ideas! I really like the idea of winesc.

May i make a small request? Could you make the ahk source available? :)

I'll have another look & start a different thread about it maybe
[thanks for checking!]
:) Yeah, that probably is a good idea. I'm curious as well.
If you have some more links for me to checkout, send them through pm!

But nearly everyday I am frustrated about something that doesn't work properly, works half the time, or stops working altogether. When are we going to see solutions that plague current systems?
I'd say... Maybe one day, but not soon. In 1992, Mark Weiser, the guy that first came up with Ubiquitous Computing presented his view of what would be a perfect world where computers would become a tool for work, rather than the work themselves. This was 16 years ago, and right now we're not that much closer to his vision. I think the problem is that computers, software, platforms, cellphones, fridges, toasters, etc are always evolving, new stuff comes up, and integrating everything into a common platform really isn't easy (nor desirable by most money-makers ;) ).

So I was wondering about every day annoyances that could be fixed that would make the computing world a better place.

* On my windows xp system my USB mouse stops being recognised once every few weeks. You'd expect there shouldn't be any problems with supported hardware after 30 years of using a mouse?
* it's impossible to track documents and previous versions when you're collaborating with others using inbuilt tools provided by any OS. You'd think it was important to see a 'communication history' of what you are working on.
* Windows updates nags even on Vista, and it there's no official mechanic to keep software up to date.
* general interface clutter, there's so many distracting options, there's way to many options to make the most of any tool.
* With xbox 360 when you play a game with one click updates get applied and the game is restarted. Why does it take 9 clicks to install a software update (next next next untick untick finish launch etc
I think that's the right attitude, be conscious about these problems, and trying to contribute to a better computing experience ourselves.
Regarding your questions..
* are you sure there isn't something wrong with your mouse or your usb ports? My previous mouse started doing that before dying, and a friend of mine's laptop also started doing that before the usb ports failed.
* google docs! :)
* They've sort of solved it in vista, you can say to the thing "nag me again in 4 hours", which i consider a big step forward over the "yes, please interrupt my work every 10minutes for the next 12 hours"
* i blame that on users which request idiotic features which MUST be implemented or the world will end (arguably, that could also be the developer's fault for accepting them, but they already do so much that it wouldn't be fair to blame them)
* No discussion there. Now that you talk about it.. I think i'll try to remove some steps on GridMove's install :)

ps: Ok, now i can get back to studying for my Mobile Computing exam this week :)

@Mike15: At DC, if you're associated with a company, you should clearly state it when you're linking to a site.
(i say this because the 2 sites you've linked to in your short posts were both to sites owned by the same company)

Well.. The original requester and the person who replied didn't return after their first post and the question was perfectly adjusted to the answer.
Still, the text isn't anywhere else on the web. So... I'm thinking.. Is it really spam? Still, it's kinda dumb to spam a free product on DC, a decent post about it would get it much more attention...

I'd vote: no reply from either of them to this post on the following days = remove the thread.
(really sorry if this isn't spam, but we've got to be on the lookout  :-[)

[edit] Or maybe i'm just paranoid :) [/edit]

then we can return to the issue of a more interactive completer for aliases with arguments, i had a few more ideas about it i will talk about later.
YAY!!! \o/ \o/

I think paint.net would do.. You only have to use the "lasso select", and then select "image -> crop to selection". From what i know, this is a pretty standard feature in image editors..
1317
Ok, it's simple to debug. It autocompletes all the names that don't have a regular expression. Or.. Not. It also works with define, even though that one also has a regular expression. I'm clueless  :-\

Actually, it's stranger than that, lanux. It's working for "tm", but not working for "maps" nor "email".

Living Room / Re: Picking the right mouse for gaming - suggestions?
« Last post by jgpaiva on June 28, 2008, 03:41 PM »
To me, it seems you have a problem of convenience here, wireless mouse vs. short battery life.
I wouldn't say that (or at least, not only that). The horror stories i mentioned, weren't about battery life, but about the wireless mouses not being reliable. I've seen a logitech mx1000 (which is a VERY expensive mouse) moving by itself across the screen without noone touching it. And it was on a mousepad!
Personally, i love my mx310.. It's been reliably working for 5 years now, and even though i want to buy a G3 (because it's lighter and i'm quite bored of this one), it just won't break! :P

Glad to know it worked out ;)

Everyone in our Call of Duty 4 clan uses WIRED mice, as do probably most other players. I once made the mistake of getting a fancy logitech wireless laser mouse, could really notice the difference when you needed pin-point cursor accuracy for shooting etc...

I've had my current Logitech MX510 wired mouse for at least 3-4 years now, still going strong, can't beat it.

Also a quality mouse surface makes a BIG difference to how well the laser/optics work in whatever mouse you choose.
I highly recommend a fUnc mouse mat - a review here: http://www.hexus.net...nt/item.php?item=108
Even though i'm not a fan of mx510, i highly support the idea of using a mousepad and specifically the func. At the time of buying one, i bought a cheaper one and ended up regreting it everytime i use one of my friends' funcs.

Hi kranor!
I'm really not that surprised that you can't make that grid, it isn't that easy and my poor english doesn't help ;)
Ok, from what i understand, the first one is correct, right?
I think the grid i posted below should do it. I also attached it to the post so it's easier to import.
I really appreciate it that you tried it yourself, looks like you made a real effort
Sorry for making this such a complex problem, but i really couldn't figure out a better way to make grids. (specially since the gridmaking utility really sucked :( )

I had to revert to opera 9.50, problems with images not loading in pages just made it unnusable :(
[edit] Nevermind, i'm an idiot. I somehow selected the "only show cached images" option. Can you believe i've had this problem for 3 days and that didn't occuor me? [/edit]

PS: opera 9.51 RC2 is out!!

[edit2] no, apparently i'm not the stupid one. for some reason, after upgrading, opera reverts to that stupid "show only cached images" option!!    [/edit2]
