There was a show on network TV that was pretty much the same thing.  I can't find the link to it currently right now.

General Software Discussion / Re: "File Size" Not Increasing As It Should Be

maybe this - https://www.nirsoft....er_changes_view.html

There are a few out there that do this.  A lot depends on the methodology even with these, as I've noticed that even doing it programmatically using the Windows API, it stops working after a while.  I've narrowed down this particular issue in several cases to be that the file isn't flushed, but kept locked, so that the operation isn't evident on the drive.  Is it possible that the data hasn't been flushed to the file?

Microsoft has software to allow just that. It's called "Your Phone."

And yes, you need to link it to your phone using an app on your phone, but after that you should be able to text from your PC.

But if you don't have a phone and just want to send SMS messages to people using your PC, then I second Google Voice as an option.

I didn't post that as he didn't want to link to his phone.  But I love it since discovering it!

I wasn't seeing that as him forsaking it- just that he had it in it's endstate unless someone came to him with needed features.  So... any features for him?

Many thanks for your quick response.

Reviews of suggested software are mixed!  It requires registering from smartphone.

Ideally, registering and using from PC rather than smartphone involvement.

You can try Google Voice (google.com/voice) to see if it meets your needs.

Advocate of the devil here:  Would it then not become just a numbers game?  This post is liked by x amount of people on this forum? What does that add exactly?

The point of it would be so that you could express thanks or approval or give some form of feedback without having to create a new reply which would therefore ping everyone who has signed up to be notified of new replies. It also helps keep threads on topic instead of having a bunch of superfluous "thanks" or "nice" replies.

This would be especially handy, IMO, in threads such as the latest Steam or GOG giveaways.

As things are now, I have to choose between no reply at all (which can give the OP the idea that nobody cared about what they had to say/share) or possibly bothering a bunch of people with notifications just to say something like "thanks" or "I enjoyed that" etc. Often times I choose the former.

^Like^  :D

This is exactly my thinking behind the "upvote/like" system.  There happens to be a lot of posts on DC where there are no replies at all because the reader may feel like it's "interesting" but have nothing useful to add to the topic. Clicking "Like" will allow the writer to know they didn't just waste their time and that the content was appreciated in some way

And I wouldn't keep having to post this.  Like I'm posting now.

Living Room / Re: Game Design Kit
« Last post by wraith808 on November 27, 2018, 06:51 PM »
this book came up on Cool Tools this morning - The Art of Game Design

I actually have that one.  It's a pretty cool take on the subject, applying 'lenses' to the game to force decisions about the game and what it will be.

As an example, the first lens is "The Lens of Essential Experience", i.e. stop thinking about the game as a designer and think about the experience of the game as a player.

One of the best quotes in the book is in the beginning - a definition of Game Design as "Deciding what a game should be".  There was a companion app on iOS, but not sure if it's still available.

Though he says that he doesn't really agree with books as texts, it really does read like a textbook.

Recommended.

Thanks!  It was available, and I'm surprised at the level of detail- I'm sure it will come in handy some day!

Docker on Windows is the current one, see OP.

Thanks!  I would have missed it otherwise... great find!

I wonder if it's a new(ish) policy to just drop off the package and leave.

I get notifications on my phone from UPS, USPS, and Amazon, whenever a package is delivered. Amazon even sends me a photo of the package sitting in my hallway.

How did you get that set up?

UPS MyChoice
USPS Informed Delivery

And Amazon has their own contractors that deliver in my area. I also have Amazon Prime, and their app installed on my phone. Not sure if there is anything else that one has to do to get alerts when one of their contractors drops off a package.

Thanks!  Very useful!  I'm surprised that USPS doesn't socialize that more!

free_version.png

I'd suggest that you might want to switch this verbiage until then.  It's the part that confused me.
1294
What is the 'reduced functionality' of the free version?  That's not spelled out anywhere on the site.
1295
One minor weakness, it does not remember after a reboot.

What doesn't survive a reboot?  The pinned shortcut in your taskbar?  If so, it seems to survive for me under Windows 7.     All I did was start the app, right-click its button in the taskbar, and chose "Pin this program to taskbar."   :)

You can also go to "%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Chrome Apps" and copy the shortcut somewhere else.
1296
At one place, your site says download the free version- in the other case, it's the free demo.  Is it meant to be a demo?  Or a free version?  And what are the differences?

Applicationize might work for you.  I use it for several webapps that don't have a dedicated desktop version.  About the only thing I really miss is the ability to "close to tray" that most desktop apps have (but that's a very minor niggle).  FWIW, if you're worried about privacy implications, the project and code are on GitHub.  You can also still use the "More tools > Create Shortcut" option in Chrome but I prefer the wholly separate process and window that Applicationize creates.

Thanks for that!  I've been missing it since they took the ability out of chrome to make apps.  On that note, know that this functionality will probably be taken out at some point, and you need to give permissions in Chrome to allow unsigned apps.
