If you really want to go portable, don't use an email client at all. Use a webmail client. Most ISPs today have one or more installed. And you can always use your a Gmail or Yahoo mail client to get to your "regular" email.

My 80GB drive in my laptop has been completely filled up. I have also been wanting to create separate environments for programming, game playing, etc. Additionally I have been watching the threads on FirstDefence ISR and the discount and thinking about giving it a try.

So this morning I purchased a new 250GB drive for my laptop, swaped out the 80GB drive, put the 80GB drive in an external enclosure, installed a fresh copy of WinXP Pro w/ SP2 on the new drive and immediately installed the trial version of FirstDefense-ISR and made a Primary and Secondary snapshot using the Getting Started wizard.

Now I ponder the possibilities and look to the DC community to help me decide how to proceed. I few random thoughts I have at this point.:
  • How well does FD-ISR get along with Acronis True Image (Home v. 9) and how best to set them up to work together properly?
  • I also like to use VMWare virtual machines for various reasons. How well does FD-ISR work with virtual machines.
  • Does FD-ISR play well with disk defragmenters and disk repartitioners?[\li]
I am now off to read the user manual for FD-ISR.

Let me follow on by asking what books, articles, etc. should I read to educate myself on this area? And I'm not asking for websites that cover the topic so that I can follow the latest news and trends, but something I can read in its entirety and learn the subject matter.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think all the Armadillo cracks are because the developers just used the product out of the box and just used the plain wrapper. I plan on getting a custom build of the software, not using the defaults, and using more than a simple wrapper - for example protected sections of code, random key checks, etc.

:o If I am completely naive and setting myself up for failure, please tell me now instead of telling me, "I told you so." later.

Well, I haven't looked at what they have to offer other than a brief glance at their websites, but I doubt I can afford any of them as none of them put prices on their websites. Sure, $10,000 is a small price to pay when your software sells for $100,000 per unit, but when I sell 100 copies total at $10, I can't afford anything that is too expensive to have prices posted on a website. The three are http://www.defendion.com, http://www.vilabs.com and http://www.byteshield.net.

I am just starting to look at what it can do, but it is interesting enough that I am sure some of the folks around here (hello Veign) would be interested in checking it out as well.

My summary is open source web application framework similar to Drupal, Joomla, etc. but wiki-centric and focusing on consuming web services.

Just to throw my two cents in. I don't care what people put in their signature. If you don't want to read them, turn them off. A signature is just that - it tells you something about the person.

Living Room / Help Me Find My Memory Leak
« Last post by tinjaw on September 26, 2007, 10:46 AM »
I want to find the memory leak that plagues my laptop. Explorer.exe will grow to nearly 1GB. I am almost positive it is a shell extension, but I don't know how to determine which one it is except to selectively turn them on and off. Using Sysinternals/Microsoft Autoruns I can see which shell extensions are loaded and I can selectively turn them on and off.

However, I know there are several gurus around here than love the low level stuff and would like to solicit their advice on how I should go about going all CSI on this thing.

How do I find out what is leaking? Is there some trick I can use via OllyDbg? Show me the way to enlightenment.

Just a quick post to remind you folks that you can help out yourselves by helping to promote DonationCoder. When you order a product or service that you learned about through DonationCoder, mention that when you place your order. Often there is a field to note this on the order form, or if not, use the comments or "special instructions" memo field to mention DonationCoder. Or if you make a donation to some cause, website, or open source software you learned about in these forums add a comment about how you read about it on the DonationCoder forums. (Often an option when you are paying via PayPal.) If no such opportunity presents itself when ordering, send a short polite email to them after your order is complete.

Why?

Because the more people hear about DonationCoder, and the publicity and orders it mobilizes, the more "they" will come to DonationCoder and offer discounts, extras, or freebies. Then they will look at the forums and see an opportunity to speak directly with informed members about their products and services. And yes, some will try to use marketing speak and sell vaporware, but that is where the members of these forums excel! We will quickly sort the wheat from the chaff and the cream will rise to the top (and Tinjaw will use more clichés!).

So remember to tell them, "I learned about you via DonationCoder.com".

General Software Discussion / Looking For Online HTML Page Creator
« Last post by tinjaw on September 25, 2007, 01:16 PM »
I find myself today looking for something that must exist. I need to create a very simple HTML page on a computer where I cannot install software. Yes, I can use MS Word and get a bunch of extra crap in the file, or Notepad and code it by hand. I also know of things like XStandard and Xinha, but those (in their raw state) don't allow me to create a page, and save it off to my local disk as index.html so I can hang it on a webserver. I basically am looking for something like and online version of NVU.

Thanks for the input folks. I spent half a day researching this area and learned quite a lot. I have decided to go with Armadillo/Software Protect for the following reasons:
  • Widely used so it is easy to get help from fellow developers.
  • The major online registration services like RegNow and Plimus have "native" support for it. (For example, Digital River owns both Armadillo and RegNow.)
  • People have used it with games built using Garage Games' Torque Game Builder.
  • The cost of purchase for Armadillo includes a custom build to make it less susceptible to generic cracks/keygens.
  • Reasonable cost ($300)

We all see what we want to see, so I saw that article as reinforcing my belief that it has more to do with the skills/experience of the programmers and the collective intelligence of the trade, in the form of best practices and things like patterns, that any particular language, tool, framework, or the size of one's trade shows. Look at architecture. No, not source code, physical buildings. There are many great wonders throughout the world. All built by different tools, frameworks, and languages, and it didn't much matter what size the builders civilization was. Many people have forgotten what PhDs are all about. It is the study of a field to a point where one contributes to it instead of using it. At that level the fundamentals come full circle. As a beginner you rely on the fundamentals to keep you on track. As you progress you try out this specialty and that specialty. You experiment with exceptions over rules. Then, as you master a trade, you return to fundamentals. You worry about clean lines or beautiful code, language or tools be damned.

urlwolf,

I say this in all honesty. I have talked to you before about doing a serious game project together. Let's do one that gets you the data you need. Sure, you won't be able to use it for your current project, but if there is a need for this type of data out there, lets generate it. PM me. Let's do this.

OK, let me ask this question to start things rolling. Forgetting about the expensive products that are only realistic for the big guys, what are the top selling solutions for the independent developer? For example, I am going to head off to RegNow and see what they sell. I assume some in-house tool.

I'll try to clarify a bit what I am looking for, but it is a little difficult to do because part of what I am doing is researching what I need in the first place. I completely understand the whole issue of copy protection not working, blah, blah, blah, but if I am going to do licensing deals with companies that require I use copy protection to protect their IP, I need a solution.

In this particular case, I am building a game using Garage Games' Torque Game Builder, but that won't always be the case. I am looking for a single solution that I can use across the board for all the software I sell. I want to do mainly two things. 1) The standard license key required protection for installation and execution of the software and 2) protection of generic media assets like BMPs, PNGs, etc. that are used by the game and not stored in the EXE itself.

This is all new to me, so I can't be more specific because I don't know what is available for this type of thing. I am also looking for pointers to information that will educate me on this whole area.

And today I plan on searching through the Garage Game forums to see what is mentioned there. I'll probably also search through the IndieGamer and GameDev forums as well.

unfortunately Carol us in europe have to pay 25$ postage for that .. (& no download option)

I'm just thinking out loud, but how cheap is it to mail to Kansas City, MO, here in the USA? You could order it, ship it to my house, I could rip it to an ISO and upload the ISO to my FTP server for you. I, of course, would be your offsite backup copy that you are allowed to legally have. I already own version 9 and am thinking about upgrading to 11. I wonder if this would be worth doing?
