He's my favorite classic doctor.  However, 10 and 11 have become my favorites overall. :)

I am such a Tom Baker fan, that some day I will make a replica of the original scarf. Lucky for me that the only knitting stitch I know, happens to be the one needed to do it.  :)

*No, I will not be happy with just a long scarf of randomly chosen colors in randomly ordered stripes.

For comparison purposes (and I really don't intend to brag, it's not good enough for that) even the most remote village in Turkey has reasonable (4-8 Mbit) dsl connections available, with unlimited data costing 30-40 dollars a month. If you agree to a data cap of 6GB per month you get to pay no more than 15$.

Actually living in a village that contains a hub, maybe, but I doubt the same would be available to someone that lived isolated, more than 5km from the nearest village/hub.

Line Qualification for DSL

To be eligible for DSL service, your phone line must be qualified by the service provider. This is a process that the provider and their technicians complete when you first sign up for the service. A few technical limitations can prevent your residence from qualifying for DSL:

Distance limitation - DSL technology is distance sensitive. In short, it means your residence must be located within a certain distance (traditionally about 18000 ft. / 5 km) away from the local phone company hub (called a central office or public exchange). In rare cases, your neighbor around the corner may be eligible for DSL but you cannot, due to this distance limitation. This is also why people living in rural areas cannot subscribe to DSL service.*
*emphasis mine

In many rural areas of the US, where homes are quite isolated, usually your only internet options are dialup or satellite, with satellite service being quite expensive for the slower speed and low data caps you get.

Are you guys aware that I have deleted accounts because of "worshippers"?

It's not so much worship as we're egging you on. :P It's been kinda quiet around here since Renegade went on hiatus. ;)

Be careful with that! It could be dangerous. I don't want to end up chained up in the basement. Or force mouser to build an outhouse.  :P

PS App what is your oDesk handle and how much do you charge?  :)

On another topic via ChrisG and you if you made a pre-priced app, it's not that $6 will break the bank, it's about trusting the payment mechanism. I trust DC (via that other payment processor I can't recall the name of!) and I trust oDesk.

That's subject is probably better discussed elsewhere and not in the cute jokes thread.  ;)

I think viglink or skimlinks are much better ads compared to Google ads. Atleast you get relevant ads compared to Google adsense. Also the viglink and skimlinks don't have the banner ads. See if that works here.

We knew from the start that we did not want to become involved in affiliate sales and commissions. It would compromise the role of our forum as an open place to debate and discuss opinions about the best free and commercial software, and it wasn't the way we wanted to raise money.

It's more amusing, in a sad sort of way, when you have the ads turned on and see this:

Apparently Mohoro will be a way to use the Windows desktop in a software-as-a-service way, dubbed "desktop as a service."

I'll say it again: Project Wonderful

And if you really want to experiment, run both adsense (on the left) and project wonderful (on the right) in the same box at the bottom of the page, and add a link in the box that leads to a thread where members can vote on which they like better (left or right).

In 30 days, you'll know which you and the members here feel better about seeing displayed on the site. (my bets are on Project Wonderful  ;))

The ads from both networks can co-exist side by side without violating the TOS of either ad network.

(it may take a day or 2 before you start getting bids on the project wonderful ad box, so don't add a voting link till they start showing up.)

But the law already allows private companies and individuals to restrict free speech in whatever they have ownership and control over...so if someone posts a comment on your blog that you don't like, you are within your rights to delete it, and it doesn't violate anybody's Constitutional rights. Radio & TV networks, newspapers, and magazines also don't have to air it or publish it if it doesn't conform to their content policies, either. No change in the laws are needed.

If you don't like what someone or some company is airing or publishing, don't read it, don't buy it, don't watch it, don't listen to it, don't support it.

Nobody forces me to watch FOX news or listen to Rush Limbaugh, so I don't. It's as simple as that. (ain't freedom great?) No need to make laws to change the content of shows I have no intention of supporting. There are plenty of others for me to choose from...they are not the only programs on TV or radio. If enough people feel the same as I do about those programs and do as I do (not support them by reading, watching, listening), it stops being profitable to air those views, and if those people want to keep expressing them, they will have to do so at their own expense. Still, no need to change the laws to censor them.

And if the laws are changed to restrict free speech, and you think it's ok, as long as views you don't agree with are the ones being censored, there will come a day when you are the one with the unpopular views that end up censored, and then you'll understand what's so wrong about it. Or if you don't want to wait that long to understand, go take a vacation to China and visit all your favorite websites or better yet, go express your political views in the middle of Tiananmen Square.

tia_2232234b.jpg

It's really not a good thing when your government can kill you for having an opinion, neither is it a good thing when they can stop you from expressing it.

Find at the bottom where it says "Chance of Displaying Advert. (0-100)" and enter a value of 101, and save.

I hope you have done this, just to see what kinds of ads are being shown to visitors.

So far, most of the ads I have seen look just like the following:

Screenshot - 4_30_2013 , 9_10_57 PM.png

A big download button with no hint of what it is actually for, that could be easily mistaken by less savvy visitors for a download button of some DC app, if it appears in a thread discussing one, and they are unfamiliar with the site, as would be the case with a first time visitor coming here from clicking a search engine result.

But what is it really for?

It leads to a site with a bit less than a stellar reputation: http://www.mywot.com...d/downloadangels.com

Not really too much info there as to exactly why, until you visit the site in question and notice all the "uninstall" links all over the place and check the reputation of the site they all redirect you to: http://www.mywot.com...recard/mindspark.com

Ah, yes, nasty, nasty toolbars, known worldwide as adware/malware/spyware.

Might want to at the very least, add that one to your adsense blocked urls list. I'll give you the exact url on IRC (you'll need that to block it), next time I see that ad.

Starting on this, the next time my daughter kicks me off the computer.

My daughter borrowed a box full of books from a friend of hers, and it will be awhile till she gets to these, so I am borrowing them from her for a bit.  :D

I saw the movie and liked it, and heard the book was so much better, so it's one of those things I feel compelled to read.

But it gets even worse. What about intimidation and expectations of private speech when it comes to your employers? Lookee here. Scary!

I still would approach that, if ever asked by an employer, to point out that my providing them with that would not only be me violating the TOS that applies to my account, but also prove that I am untrustworthy, a security risk to his company, and would be evidence of my inability to follow rules.  :D

And I would probably also add a bit of advice, that any current employee that actually complies with his request be promptly fired for it, and any prospective employee not be hired.

Because in the US, censorship only violates your Constitutional right to free speech, if the government is doing it.  ;)

This is a great message:
http://www.greenhear...app/game-dev-tycoon/

In certain point of the game your virtual game studio goes bankrupt due to piracy.
BUT this only happens if you have an illegal copy of this game :)

Some info:
http://www.joystiq.c...-in-game-bankruptcy/
-fenixproductions (April 30, 2013, 07:11 AM)

But is it really an illegal copy if the developer was the one to deliberately "leak" the "cracked" version? Or could it be considered a legal "unofficial" freeware version, intended by the developer, for distribution through torrent trackers, purely for the purpose of gaining a whole lot of free publicity for their game?

And what about including something in their game where you lose a lot of money because another less ethical game company decided to copy your games in order to steal profits away from you? You know, like the developers of this game did when they copied GameDev Story. Oh, I guess they forgot about that, or they just didn't want it to be that amusingly ironic.  :D
