Was it just me or has the server been inaccessible for a few hours?

I noticed yesterday connecting was hit and miss.  This morning it was no go until around 10:00 AM EST.

Speaking of Puppy, anyone know hot to get audio?  When I press "configure sound levels" all it get is a window frame with one check box with no label.  Play test sound gives me nothing.

It doesn't. Everything else - Mint, etc - works fine as is on my system, both as LiveCD and installed. Like I said I am sure there is a way but I want to see how default works when trying things.

I am impressed with the quick load.  I put it on a Kensington USB 3.0 plastic stick.  It only writes at 10 MB/s but probably reads fairly quickly.  I didn't have to wait around for the desktop to materialize like I do for Mint.  On a desktop it would probably be ok but on this Lappie Mint is kind of sluggish from a stick.

Edit:  Plus I couldn't figure out without spending a lot of time, how to get the WiFi to go.  Running Mint in a VM on Windows I am already connected but booting Mint from the stick I would have to fumble around and figure it out.  The Puppy popped up stuff it thought would work and some of them did.  :)

Have used Puppy Linux 6.0.2 in recent times and in 2015 not recognizing/displaying foreign characters (like window titles inside Firefox) is silly, doesn't matter if it supposed to be minimal. I know it can be fixed but when I test or use Linux or other new stuff I am talking about default behaviour. Mint, Fedora (not Gnome desktop though!) are the best two options, minimal or not.

The settings utility that comes up on first boot shows UTF-8 as default.  If this fixes what you refer to or not I don't know.

Turns out the latest release of Puppy Linux will offer to save state info on shutdown.  No CD needed.  Just run UnetBootin in Windows to install the puppy iso to USB stick.

Edit:  Also I found the WiFi connection utility Frisbee to be the easiest way to connect to the college's WiFi network.  Once it showed connected I just tried to browse until it routed me to the "login" page where I could enter an email address.  I tried other Linux distros from USB and the WiFi just hung on me.  Just for general info.  :)

I'm a bit skeptical.  The "parallel parking technique" used in Shaolin Soccer wouldn't result in something that tight.  You would have to drop it in via crane or have wheels that turned to make a right angle with the curb.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RollbackRX Pro 10.4 25% discount
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 13, 2015, 07:05 AM »
Looks like this discount is still in effect.  The TipRadar page date has been updated to Nov. 10.

Just to update on usage, I have had no problems using this with Macrium Reflect Server provided that when I want to do a new incremental backup with Macrium I first uninstall Rollback.  Usually I do scans for malware and tracking cookies.  Then I delete temp files using CCleaner.  Also I may delete my browser caches and defrag the HD.

Once I update my Macrium backup to the current state of the system I install Rollback again.  Typically this takes me about 45 minutes total. (Edit: Come to think of it MBAM threat scan takes about 1/2 hour by itself.  So say 75 minutes or thereabouts.)

Another thing I found out from the Rollback forums, it also watches the MBR.  If any changes are detected it undoes them.  Note that if  you have a GPT HD there is still an MBR wrapper around it.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: GOTD XYPlorer Pro 15.90 [free]
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 12, 2015, 02:48 PM »
I am starting to like this program.  I found an .ini file tweak "StartPathNewTab=1" which, when XYPlorer is set to replace Explorer as default file manager, will open folders launched by FolderCache via right click, in new tabs instead of overwriting the currently active tab.

Using FolderCache buttons like Side by Side still open Explorer.exe since it is run explicitly.  But the ones opened via right click in the FolderCache list or using the Open button should open using whatever is set as the default file manager.  XYPlorer loads pretty fast.  So even if it is not already open the delay is tolerable.

This way I can still use FolderCache but start to get away from doing everything in Explorer.

I am not sure if this is exactly the issue of product key clean install.  Perhaps it is relevant:

@sword not to hijack the thread but is there a quick and dirty way to put Puppy on a USB or do I have to boot it and run the install to USB?

Edit:
I have tried Mint and Debian booting off a USB stick on my Laptop but something small and fast running in ram has a lot of appeal.

I have found another Sci Fi author with a series of novels that I enjoy.

The Joe Haldeman novels I have read:

Forever War
Accidental Time Machine
Camouflage

I just finished Camouflage.  I will go to the library later today for yet another Haldeman novel.

Hmm, I remember reading a blog someplace where the person seriously advocated building the security into the system before the system has been made to work.  He noted that programmers leave out security measures because they are trying to get the code to work.  Then after the function is enabled they graft the security on later.  He suggested building in the security from line one of code.  Of course how to accomplish this new way of program design is never specified.

The blogger is even more inane than those people who posit that "everything should be free."  :)

Edit:  Sorry it was some time ago when I encountered the blog.  I have no clue where I could dig up the citation.

Big Momma Thornton - Hound Dog

She also wrote Ball and Chain of Janis Joplin fame.  I saw her live in Boston back in the day.  She played the drum kit, blues harp, and sang(but not all at once.)  Quite a show.

Not so much a fan of 'Mayall et. al.', but like a lot of what I've heard from Cream:

I like the MayAll blues guitar stuff.  But his harmonica work is better.  Of course for all time guitar nobody tops Hendrix in my book.  Aside from the fuzz box and wah wah pedal stuff he had this poly-rhythmic thing going where he would accompany himself on the solos, live.  I don't think necessarily a lead guitar solo has to be fast or wild.  A lot of my friends were not impressed with the Traffic Low Spark guitar work.  But I liked it.  It was like the individual bent notes were funky even though not played in a bunch.

B.B. King was another style.  Even though what he played was not technically difficult, he had such a feeling to it that it captured your attention.  Made the guitar talk as they say.  But Eric Clapton is definitely not boiled spinach either.  :)
