Living Room / Re: 150 Widescreen HD Wallpaper images
« Last post by Innuendo on December 11, 2009, 11:02 AM »
Yeah, I've downloaded a cubic butt-load of HD wallpaper packs over the last couple months, but I'd be very reluctant to share them here for the reason April just touched on.

Note: FWIW, WH13 is a "one-trick pony" show concept if there ever was one. But the cast is attractive and likable. And the interaction and dialog is witty, so it's enjoyable even if it's not very original or challenging.

It *is* a one-trick pony. Everything about the show screams 'hokey' and 'lame'. However, once you sit down and start watching it the cast really makes the show work. And I have to give them kudos on their season finale. The last few minutes of that episode were just...."Whoa...".

Living Room / Re: Motherboard Advice Needed
« Last post by Innuendo on December 10, 2009, 10:11 AM »
You need to take a look at Gigabyte motherboards. They are one of the few motherboard manufacturers that use Japanese solid-state capacitors. They have a varied line-up so I have no worries that you won't be able to find the perfect motherboard with the perfect match of features for you.

As soon as I enable the CDROM in device manager, the 1 second ticking starts right up again.

Have you tried swapping out the CD-ROM drive? Maybe it is border-line defective? Also, something less drastic to try is to make sure it's running the latest firmware.

I used to use MPC...then I moved to MPC-HC. These days I use KMPlayer (the last version before Pandora.TV bought them out).

I'm not sure what the obsession is with speed, though. I'll gladly give up a second or so in launch time for the sheer humongous amount of tweaking/tuning options KMPlayer gives me.

General Software Discussion / Re: Minefield(Firefox) 3.7Pre seems to work
« Last post by Innuendo on December 09, 2009, 11:09 PM »
Weird.  Minefield 3.6Pre most of my add ons worked through nearly all the builds.  Now it's the opposite.  Only one build out of dozens will work and I have to stick with that one.  Even a beta release gives no clue.  It's strictly trial and error.

Now that is weird...because I have 44 extensions installed. Only DragIt has given me trouble thus far. I haven't had time to test them all yet, though.

Looking at the program schedule, it appears that ECW Smash-Ups is going to be a regular feature every Tuesday @ 10:00pm going forward.

Going forward? Where ya been? ECW has been in that time slot for the last two years. Sad, but true. :(

But for military-themed space opera, I'd still have to give the nod to Space: Above and Beyond.

That show was ahead of its time. It'd do a lot better today than it did at the time. That was another show Fox sabotaged by screwing around with its time slot.

It's taking time out! And we are going to be charged 35% more each year for the next 3 years....  >:(

Oh? Are they telling you it is only going to be three years? I bet as they get close to the end of year 3 something will happen and the deadline will either be extended or they'll just make that the permanent price. :(

Living Room / Re: How's *that* for a false positive? And is it? (Avira AV)
« Last post by Innuendo on December 09, 2009, 05:32 PM »
Avira has always been bad about false positives. It's always been good about detecting the bad stuff, but I have never in good conscience been able to recommend it due to the false positives.

To me it sounds more like somebody's trying to register a trade name and 'sci-fi' is already in the public domain. ;D

That and they no longer show really good sci-fi. They've gone to 'sci-fi lite'...ergo, SyFy. ;)

(Though Battlestar Galactica is one of the best TV shows you will *ever* watch...even if you hated the original version or even if you hate science fiction.)

What have you noticed since beta 2?  I'm just curious.

Like I said, the taskbar preview is now working 100% now in Windows 7. No more endless progress 'circles'. With the add-on compatibility reporter everything seems to work except DragIt. I'll have to come up with a temporary solution till DragIt is updated.

No!

I had a feeling that would be the reaction over here. Sorry I'm the bearer of bad news. :(

Living Room / Apple acquires music service Lala
« Last post by Innuendo on December 08, 2009, 12:38 PM »
I know a few people here use Lala.com for their music needs & I thought this might need to be posted. Evidently Apple has purchased music service Lala in order to "take iTunes to the next level." I don't know about the rest of you, but that sounds ominous for Lala remaining a stand-alone service.

Well, Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 is out & they have come a long way since beta 2. I had to stop using 3.6 a short while after my last post as GreaseMonkey wasn't compatible & I missed it too much. Happily, a new version of GreaseMonkey was released a bit ago & it is now 3.6-compatible.

Even the little taskbar thumbnails seem to be behaving so far. I'll update here if things should go to heck in a hand basket.

"In Firefox there is the possibility to drop an extension as a raw component directly into the core folders of Firefox. This means that the component is loaded invisibly for the user. The user has no facility to disable or uninstall it from within the browser, let alone knowing that it is there in the first place.

Yeah, like the Outertech Dude said...theirs doesn't install invisibly. This is more to combat the extensions like that Microsoft .NET Assistant extension that just appeared in everyone's list of installed extensions one day with no clue as to how it got there.

+1 for FireFly! In fact, it's been a while since I watched that show, and now I have it in High Definition. Woo!

That show got screwed over so badly by the network that I didn't even know it existed until well after it was cancelled and SciFi (now SyFy) was showing it. That was a very well-written show that didn't get a fair chance to succeed.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Innuendo on December 06, 2009, 09:22 PM »
So did I. Turbo Navigator was my first non-Explorer file manager, and I used it until I discovered the wonders of Windows Commander (as Total Commander was known back then).

Ha! Same here! I discovered Total Commander's plugins and there was just no going back to Explorer or Turbo Navigator.

I can't remember if it was Windows 7, but I once had a problem where I installed Linkman and the Firefox extension didn't get installed along with the program. I think the way I fixed it was by having to create a new profile in Firefox.

Crazy 'think outside the box' guess, but in IE's File menu there's a "Work Offline" item. That's not checked, is it?

I think I will never understand that not so many people seem to care about. My colleges just accepted scenario that their goods may disappear someday.

fenix, while your English is normally outstanding, I think the word you were looking for was colleagues. :)

But to address your post, I cannot imagine anybody stealing a 'used' mug from someone they hardly know. Yuck!

Ouch...good thing most Aussie women have the good sense not to hang around here :P

Well, to be fair...the most famous of all Aussie women, Elle MacPherson & Nicole Kidman, looking nothing like Paul Hogan or crocodiles. :)

Turbo Navigator is an old favourite, still good for a place in the thumb drive. unfortunately the author has stopped updating/developing the program. recently i found a site that has the program available for download.

Oh, that's a fine program. I used it a lot back when it was still being developed. It was a very sad day when it was abandoned.

Mum and I find Australian Series and Movies excellent! Real people...

How can you keep all the characters straight when they all talk & look like Crocodile Dundee?

And that's just the women! :: ducking and running ::

That's because 90% of people outside the UK don't have a sense of humour ;)

Yes...yes...that must be it.  ;)
