4wd: Syncrify!

I can't believe you totally mentioned this here and I glossed over it.  Syncrify is exactly what I wanted!  I'm testing it out right now, very impressive.  Apologies!

I'm sure alternatives will eventually take off.  Recently I've been playing around with Smith Micro's Anime Studio and Motion Artist.

These are great.  ;D
There's one ( I forget the name) that does a really nifty trick:  you are clicking the next-next screens, then there is one screen that doesn't appear immediately and you're next-clicking momentum or rhythm has already been established, so you autmoatically click next without even seeing the screen appear.  SO that slight flicker makes you accept an ask.com installation.  I thought it was an anomaly but then it happened on different computers.  very clever.

Galway Girl performance is lovely.  Perfect party music, i love those sing alongs.  reminds me of a time I met a bunch of french people on a cruise...they invited me in and sang traditional french tunes all night (plus drinking of course!).

Living Room / Re: Recommend? USB 3.0 + eSATA hub for desktop tower

Looks like I may have to get another sata controller for the mobo, since I'm out of sata slots.  SOmething like this:
http://www.amazon.co...;keywords=esata+pcie

Still, why can't any product out there go for more that 4 of these high-speed plugs?  All motherboards I've seen have 4 sata slots plus 2 more of a "special" variety (so 6 max, usually).  Then, all the addons with pcie have up to 4 max.  This one (above) has 2, but you can use either one internally or externally.  But why can't they make one with 2 internal AND 2 external?  Seems like the technology for esata or USB 3.0 can't go past 4.

They have usb 2.0 hubs that can have 10, even 28 I've seen.  Maybe there just isn't much demand.

Living Room / Recommend? USB 3.0 + eSATA hub for desktop tower
« Last post by superboyac on April 27, 2013, 08:56 PM »
OK, here's what I need:
Some kind of hub to attach mount to my desktop so I can have USB 3.0 and eSATA connections.  Right now, I have neither, although the tower has two unused usb 3.0 slots, but the motherboard has no place for it (doesn't support it).  I have two PCI-E slots available.  I've looked around, I've found a couple of PCI-E things that have two of each connection on it.  I don't know why this seems to be the limit (4 total) but it is everywhere I look.

I also have a bunch of unused 5.25" bays, so I'd like to mount a hub in one of them that has few of each connector on it.  I'm not having much luck finding it, but as far as that goes, how would it connect to the motherboard?  I'm guessing the 5.25 hub would connect through a normal usb 3.0 or sata cable to some pci-e device, but I'm not sure.

Any recommendations?

Here's an interesting one...I like how the bay plugs into the motherboard directly with some funky pci-e cable!

This is the one I've been waiting for!  See this post:
https://www.donation....msg296807#msg296807

I've always been interested in a way to access your files from everywhere, like dropbox, but without the cloud and without the size limitations.  So this is a very interesting development.  The main issue with private file access like this is that most residential upload speeds are so slow that downloading anything other than simple word documents would be a pain.  And you don't have all the seeders of a torrent to share the bandwidth and make it faster, so that seems to be the main obstacle for me.  That's where the benefit of a cloud comes in.  But with the cloud, there's the privacy issue and normally the size limitations.

Is one cup of good, black coffee in the morning all that harmful?

Supposedly, that's almost ideal from what I've heard.

Well, it's late afternoon here and I'm now sitting quietly sipping a fresh cup of my favorite afternoon blend: Gevalia's exquisite Cafe Sperl while reluctantly thinking that I really do need to cut down on my coffee consumption in general - and my caffeine intake specifically.
 (see attachment in previous post)
'Problem' is I don't do drugs. And I don't even drink that often. Plus, I no longer smoke (clean for 13 years this year!) ...so right now a good cup of coffee is about the only indulgence I still permit myself.

I'm afraid if I curtail coffee too much I'll risk losing my main rationalization for living. ;D

(Note: Switching to a decaf blend isn't the simple answer either. I've tried many, and there's a noticeable difference in flavor. And unfortunately, on blindfold tests (I told you I tried! I really did!) I've ended up favoring the caffeinated blends almost single every time.)
Is one cup of good, black coffee in the morning all that harmful?  That's my current schedule, and I like it a lot.  I love drinking coffee in the morning before doing anything.  I used to drink 30+ ounces a day, but that was bad (coffee headaches).

The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard "had his own quite peculiar way of having coffee," according to the biographer Joakim Garff. "Delightedly he seized hold of the bag containing the sugar and poured sugar into the coffee cup until it was piled up above the rim. Next came the incredibly strong, black coffee, which slowly dissolved the white pyramid." Then he gulped the whole thing down in one go.
:o
Perhaps this explains Kierkegaard's dramatic death.  Holy cow, Soren!

I pretty much do what 40hz described also.  A while back, I went through some version control investigations (probably have some threads here about it) but found nothing to work well enough for my tastes.  So now it's pretty manual, and routine as 40 says.  I do use Syncovery pretty heavily for the backup-synchronization.
1262
Thanks, great advance so far.
I was planning to use FL studio, or presonus studio one.
I will use VSTs only, no external audio recording.
I'd like to have the best midi sequencer and piano roll I can find.

My main concern is that performance inside the virtual machine may not be that great. For a start, 3D accel would not work, or not work well, so all the compiz/unity stuff is out. I'm thinking 12.04 with unity 2D.

How's win 8 under a vm? looks like is has less graphic stuff on the window decorations, may perform well...
this is what i do also so far, just vst's.  you don't want to consider reaper?  are you already experienced with FL or presonus?  i've been playing around with reaper's midi tools.  they say cubase has the best midi features, so i wanted to compare.  i found reaper very good with midi, i have no real complaints i can think of.  if there are specific midi things you are interested in, let me know, and i'll tell you how good/bad reaper is at it.

lol...i'm reading 40hz's post, and now i'm getting nervous.  my reaper rig is on my main desktop pc, and i use it pretty seriously.  haven't had any problems so far, but you never know.  i do install a lot of software and tinker a lot.  it is still in hobby version though, i guess.  in the future, i'll probably eventually make a portable daw that will be standalone though.  so i can take it with me to record individual grand piano, hammond organ, guitar, etc. tracks.  still thinking about that one.  either i get a new place and establish a studio permanently there, or use a funky portable daw rig.

urlwolf, what are you trying to do with VM?  i don't recommend DAW and VM together.
1263
I've been dealing with DAWs for several years in my typical hack/non-traditional style.  it's true, for serious use, you don't really want to update anything once you have a rig that is working.  But I think this is becoming less and less true, but still, better to be on the safe side.  I think it is more true for the high end tools and software than for the hobbyist, which is where i seem to have evolved to.  for example, if you have a windows or mac machine, and are running cubase, pro tools, logic, etc.  i would be very cautious about updating and stuff, because those things are VERY sensitive setups.  i had a cubase setup that i eventually updated and the tracks and everything just won't play anymore.  i can probably fix it, but it would be a headache.

now, i've moved to reaper on windows 7, which is a setup i have fallen in love with big time.  reaper is practically free ($60 for home use, and will work unregistered forever so basically free).  reaper is a tiny installation (8 mb) which is mind blowing when you consider the sizes of the professional software, which i have no desire to use again.  it is kept up to date, and very flexible with it's file management and importing/exporting stuff.  this is a big deal because the other companies are not, and that is often what makes changing things so hard in the future.  anyway, i'm a huge fan of reaper, it's something very special.  and i'm still a beginner.  it's been rock solid and has been able to do anything i have come up with.

i like windows 7 for daw, haven't tried win 8, probably won't for a while.  windows 7 has been no problem so far.  one thing i recommend for daw...SSD.  especially if you work with samples, but even if you don't.  SSD's are perfect for music production, has made the biggest difference of anything else i've noticed.

i see that you are concerned with time-machine like saving of files.  I don't really relate, but i understand.  Most of these daw software have pretty good undo/redo capabilities, so that's good.  but if you save a file and overwrite it and want to go back from the one a week ago...i guess that's difficult.  i want to say don't worry too much about that, but don't want to dismiss it outright.  here's the thing...i don't think it would work all that well anyway, trying to go back and recover stuff like that.  you can use something like autover to monitor the folder and keep backup versions of the file everytime you save it again.  i do that for word docs, but not for music.  i find it's just better to do it manually.  for example, if i have a good track recorded, but i want to experiment with a new setting or something that i'm nervous about, i'll do a "save as" and start with a different file, just for insurance.  trying to automate that pschology/behavior will probably not work as well as your thinking.  you just know when you are making a big change and you should be aware of it.

i know it's a bit of a rambling, but in conclusions:
win7 64 bit, SSD, reaper, lots of RAM, avoid external drives (especially usb), get a good soundcard (M-audio at least).  this is my advice.

This is not really a music video per se, but it's so cool I had to post.

Tony Monaco, hammond organ player extraordinaire, gives the most concise explanation I've ever seen of all the awesome things about this legendary instrument.  With a performance!  Tony is also the most willing and prominent educator for this instrument out there, as far as I know.

Yesterday, I emailed him and told him my goal was to play the hammond organ as if I were mimicking a big band (count basie, to be specific).  He put this video up less than a day later.  I had initially told him I was interested in his drawbar settings, since I've known he goes through the trouble of rewiring everything to his liking.  I was blown away by this.  He makes tons of references to big band stuff, even basie's guys.  What a generous man.

There's some truth to that. There was a story of a GE lightbulb that had burned for something like 20 years. It became a minor attraction in the town it was in. When it finally failed, it was returned to GE, who desperately wanted to know why.

The analysis determined that too much tungsten (about 4X) had been applied to the filament inside the bulb due to a random glitch in the manufacturing process. This extra tungsten significantly extended the service life of the bulb.

GE's official conclusion: The bulb burned that long because it was..."defective."
 (see attachment in previous post)
Seems that being defective has little to do with function and everything to do with form. Since the bulb was "out of spec" it was therefor "defective" QED as far as the manufacturing engineers were concerned.

Wow, how revealing.

If you're planning on using WebDrive to do file synchronization with a remote server, I can no longer recommend it.

For reasons completely unfathomable to me, last week WebDrive decided that it would redownload EVERY file EVERY time it connects, rendering it completely unusable as a file synchronization tool.  Your mileage may very but the app went from essential to useless for me overnight.
That's crazy!  I wonder if it is due to copyright or legal issues.

I think a lot of this IP protectionism is indicative of a loss of confidence on the part of many. The only people that try (in my experience) to wring every last nickel out of everything they come up with are the people who fear their creativity is a finite resource. That they only have so much originality in them - and once it's gone, it's gone.

I've had more of my own original work (ideas, words, music) than I can shake a stick at "appropriated" by others over the years. Does it ever bother me? Maybe a little every so often. (Mostly when I'm feeling very tired or am unusually short on sleep.) But so what? I'm a clever chap who doesn't mind working. Nor do I ever plan on retiring. I'll just write new stuff. I'm never one to be at a loss for ideas - or come up short on creativity.

So pilfer away AFAIC. There's plenty more where that came from. 8)
Good point. That's how I feel about it also.  I also feel that a lot of creative people, either due to ignorance or intentional lying, are not aware of how they copy others for their own creativity.  It's a messy argument, and definitely not legally sound in any way, but in my mind it's impossible to create something new that is not built upon the generations of creativity that came before it.  There may be a new twist or a new element, but to argue that you came up with the whole thing is impossible for me to accept.  All my favorite people, those that are called "the geniuses" by most, whenever I study them, I find clear cut examples of who they learned their craft from.  If someone asked me about ANYTHING I've done, i can tell you almost exactly where each element is inspired from.

So i just got this thing, and it's incredible.  $30, mind you.
http://www.amazon.co...Remote/dp/B006OW1J1M (see attachment in previous post)
Let me tell you what this thing can do:
--full air mouse, meaning you wave your hand around in the air and move the mouse.  Super smooth, plug and play.  Why am I making a big deal?  The only other ones that we are aware of from the big companies are Logitech and Gyration, and they cost over $100.  This is an incredible deal.
--It has a full keyboard.  amazing.
--turn it over, on the other side, it has a simple setup for a TV replacement remote, it can learn IR commands.
--the usb receiver is hidden inside.  lovely.
--exact size of an iphone.
--rechargeable with a regular, non-proprietary usb cable.
--replaceable battery
--works on windows, and android!

This is amazing to me.  Maybe I'm over-sensitive to things like this, but it reveals a few things to me.  How stupid and ignorant most of my country (US) is to the technology available, especially regarding what things should cost, how easy they should be to use, how simple doesn't necessarily mean better, and better doesn't necessarily mean more complicated, how strong the marketing of the more popular brands are, etc etc.  Also, how held back the US technology experience is because of legal/political issues, and how little people realize this.  If I hear one more person show amazement by whatever new feature the iphone can do, i will throw up.
OK...just noticed some buggy behavior with this device.  the orientation can reverse it seems randomly and there is a fn-esc combo key that is supposed to fix it and it hasn't really worked for me.  also at times, the mouse will be going spazzy all over the place (uncontrollable).  So I would NOT at this point recommend it as a replacement for the reliable logitech and gyration, but merely a backup or cheap alternative.

I own a $$ Gyration set. It is pretty amazing even if I primarily bought it for the to-die-for keyboard.

If this puppy works even half as good as that it's worth double the asking price imho.

Thanks for sharing!
It totally works at least half as good.  The gyration stuff is better built and probably more ergonomically comfortable.  Their stuff is great.  Logitech's MX Air mouse is also fantastic.  And yes, it probably is a product of some sort of slave labor (I even looked up the company's info online, and you can see the conveyer belt booths and factory environment  >:().

The featureset is remarkable.  Keyboard and air-mouse in one device is the only one of it's kind I know of.

How does that work with Android? Does it use Bluetooth?
I believe it does somehow.  Crazy eh?  I really don't know at this point, haven't been able to test that out, but others have and say it works.  I have another media player device coming ($60) that's an Android device and I'll try it out on that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Listary 4 released - tons of new features
« Last post by superboyac on March 08, 2013, 10:38 AM »
I welcome the new version!  Thanks.

Just fyi for folks, I use Listary along with Direct Folders.  Listary is the main tool, for all the features it supports.  The overlapping features in DF I turn off.  The ones I leave on are:
--the info panel (useful for navigation and floats above the window)
--resizing the window, and default sort (detail mode) (Listary doesn't do this)

one thing neither program does is allow the user to set the column widths in detail mode.  I always find the default column width of the first column (the filename) to be too narrow.  I always want it to be wider.  Can't find a way to do this.  A feature request, if I may!
