General Software Discussion / Re: Text outliner/organiser/editor
« Last post by Armando on April 03, 2008, 08:04 PM »
Why do I not want to use Word? Well, it is just too slow and big and cumbersome for something that is fundamentally simple. I don't need all the formatting and collaborating etc etc functions for this task. I've given up actually typing in Word for the same reason. It's like going out to play tennis in an overcoat and waterproof. That's the first reason.

OK, I didn’t know you didn’t want to use word… But, regarding slowness etc., I wonder what are your computer specs like because on my computers (even on my other more than 6 years old laptop) MS Word 2003 is never really slow... and I have some pretty damn big documents going well over 600 pages, with tables, pictures, etc. Of all the word processors available Word 2003 (NOT 2007) is the one that handles huge documents the most gracefully. It’s not perfect, but I found others to be slower. And regarding formatting etc., I don’t care too much if Word has all kinds of options I rarely use; they’re just there and I generally don’t use them, and if I do happen to need them, I’m usually quite happy they’re there -- eg : one feature that I use A LOT in my own papers is the “comments” feature. I can’t imagine that a writer could live without some ways of inserting notes in his/her writing (and I see that this is one of the features you’re looking for).

(BTW PageFour is a great software. But the feature set wasn’t enough for me to justify buying it.  There are also software that are better at Outlining IMO.)

I think the basic problem is that Word confounds the use of headings with the idea of outlining.
You’re right, but only 3/4 right in a way ;) since you can easily have “headings” that  won’t be shown in the outline/map — the “only” problem is that I don’t think that you’d be able to have "outline headings" that would be invisible in the actual document.

Ideally, I'd be able to add little yellow stickies too that would stick to the bit of the document I put them on. And tagging (and the ability to select and cut and paste by tag would be good - something I've not yet managed in OneNote) + the usual highlighting and comments options. But just the fast simple bit would do.

Yes. Like I said In MS Word, for other organizing purpose I use notes (comments) abundantly.  And I there’s one thing that I love about the way comment are managed in words and NOT in other word Processors : you can have them in the “reviewing pane” at the bottom of the window (and not in bubbles in the margin…. yuk)

I don't find the document map especially helpful because you can't do anything with it except look and navigate around the document.
Yes. But, as you know, you just need to switch between Outline view and Print view when you need to move stuff around. It’s not exactly as smooth as in an outliner (I’m always afraid that bits of texts won’t follow the sections moves…) but it works pretty well.

I do use OO - and maybe I ought to try how well it does outlining, but somehow I doubt if it will be better.

IMO OO.org’s outlining is not bad at all. It’s just not as good as Word’s…

The reason I want to see the bodytext alone while I am working is that is what the final copy will look like. I will just be confused by having headings appear inside paragraphs. And really this is a task I want to be able to focus my concentration on without distractions on the screen.
That’s a good point. I confess that I’ve just “learned” to live with the “should be invisible” headings in my texts! But it would certainly be more convenient to be able to make them disappear when they’re not necessary. SQLnotes would probably allow to hide or see the actual “item titles”(or even hide some levels) and just see the what’s in the body or the HtmlPane in the html export. I just haven’t tried… yet. (But I’ll keep discussion about SQLnotes features etc. for the SQLnotes thread… ;) )

I'm not convinced that OneNote will be better for this than Word. Possibly just different advantages and disadvantages.

I’ve tried using OneNote and I still wonder what “everybody” loves so much about it.  True : its interface is very pleasing, it works well with tablet PCs, it can be used for many other things other than just writing documents, etc.
I’ve really tried using and liking it, but I dislike the way it stores the data, and I find it way more complicated to use than Word for big document structures — all these sections, section groups, pages, etc. wow : flat view, anybody ? where’s that feature? How do you get that “unified view” of all the data in a notebook? I also find it much less powerful than other solutions for storing, structuring and filtering all kinds of data. A lot of people that I respect tremendously here in DC swear by it though… so it must be VERY good for certain people. I probably didn’t try to use it for the right stuff.

Ultra Recall will allow for the first - Show Combined Text for Multiple Selections - but may not meet your second criteria.
When I tested Ultra Recall a while ago, I was interested in that feature too (Show Combined Text for Multiple Selections) and it was a big deception. Not too sexy formatting wise, and I hated the whole process of importing my documents in Ultra recall.  Also, exporting the unified view, if I recall correctly (ahem) was also not an easy task. I think I never succeeded! Other Ultra Recall longtime users could probably say more though…
I think Ultra Recall was one of the last thing I tried before coming back to Word… (and Outlook for my task, calendar, etc.!)

Too bad Ecco Pro died ten years ago. It was the greatest note and outliner app ever. Why no one ever coded something similar I'll never know.

I personally prefer SQLNotes by far. And, following Pierre’s (PPLandry) post , I’ll end by saying that SQLNotes will probably be what I’ll be using for the kind of task you’re describing — it could potentially do everything that Word does, but with much better Outlining, great tagging, and the possibility to indefinitely reorganize, clone, split, etc. information. I’m just waiting for the coming MS word integration and the 3 features Pierre just presented ! :))  (Pierre… ; Here’s the request you're looking for ;) ) Of course, only after trying to use SQLnotes to structure long documents in real life situations will I be able to say for sure whether it’s my preferred solution… (I already use SQLnotes for very different tasks… But for a long document, I’d currently miss the “unified view feature” — yes it’d probably be possible to export as html, but… I sometimes need that view as I work and play with the structure.

(PS … And there’s one thing that I find hard to find in any Outliner but that’s sooooo convenient when I write in Word : zoom Out/zoom in.)

My idea was a two pane outliner/text editor with a hierarchical outline tree on the left and a text pane on the right. With the ability to see all the text from selected nodes together - either in the text pane or another. And the ability to re-order the tree using drag and drop. I was sure that there would be many programs that could do this - and maybe there are, but I haven't found them.
[...]
Word (at least in its 2007 incarnation and with my limited knowledge of it) appears not to have the ability to select body text alone (would probably have to select all headings and delete them to see the text alone and then undo a bit to go back to status quo). I must admit that I am beginning to question the value of a word processor for a lot of everyday work. And I've never found them very effective for this type of task however much you use versions and subdocuments.

I find that MS Word (2003 in my case) has a pretty powerful outliner, and it allows you (through the "Document map" view ) to almost have a real 2 pane outliner, IMO much more flexible and manageable than OneNote for huge and complex document structures ... I use Word for many many things. For anything textual, it's really pretty good... ;) Now, I think that you're right that it doesn't allow you to see only the body text without the headings. But is that really necessary ? You could always remove all headings before print -- not ideal, that's for sure, but feasible without tooooo much hassle. You're also right that SQLNotes will probably allow that kind of stuff quite soon since the plan is to add the option to use MS Word as the HTML editor and also add the possibility of seeing the html text directly in the grid itself (there was a nice screen cast about that feature but can't find it anymore). However, it can't be done now, so....

I've been trying a lot of different options myself and always came back to Word (the other big ones like Open Office.org or TextMaker would probably do the job too, but I prefer MS Word's outliner... who knows though, maybe one of the other offers the option of hiding all headings? BTW : have you seen this thread ?). I've created many templates for my different needs, and, really, it works pretty well. You could also try the "chapter by chapter" addon (didn't really work out for me though).

Like mouser, tamasd, kartal,  wraith808, mrainey and maybe others, all my mail is downloaded locally. I like having control of my files, and I don't find gmail's search tools more sophisticated than X1 or any other desktop search software for that matter. BTW, it's not because one downloads all emails locally that he/she necessarily spends hours sorting and classifying them.

I never REinstall either -- or very rarely... I think the only times I REinstalled windows were during NT 4.0/98 times. I might have reinstalled windows 2000 a couple times too... But that's a long time ago. I guess I'm careful and have good backup habits...

The philosopher Nelson Goodman had some ideas that are relevant to the audiophile/wine specialist/Orville Redenbacher popcorn (and to some extent... Spinrite  :P). Here's an excerpt from "Goodman's Aesthetics" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) :

With regard to two visually indiscernible paintings, an original and a copy, Goodman addresses the question whether there is any aesthetic difference between the two pictures (1976, 99-102). Notice that, if there is a difference, it must not depend on what one can visually discern at the present time, for ex hypothesis, there is no such visual difference that can currently be detected. Goodman's answer is that there is an aesthetic difference between the two paintings even now, when we are unable to tell one painting from the other, for an awareness that one is the original and the other a copy informs us that a difference may be perceived, and indeed modifies our present perception of the two paintings: now, for instance, we look for differences between the two paintings, we train our eyes and minds to discriminate differences that are currently indiscernible (1976, 103-105). Goodman's takes his claims to be general and as granting the conclusion that “the aesthetic properties of a picture include not only those found by looking at it but also those the determine how it is to be looked at” (1976, 111-112). Hence, even with pictures that are not “perfect” copies of other pictures, indeed with any picture, knowing how it should be classified—including its classification by authorship, as a Rembrandt, a Vermeer, or a Van Meegeren—makes a difference to how the picture may be perceived. For perceiving is, after all, determined by the labels that one projects over what is presented in front of one's eyes. It must be noticed, then, that this claim is all within a theory of perception and, while claiming that non-perceptible features are relevant to perception, hence are relevant to aesthetic experience, it does not claim that non-perceptible features as such are relevant to aesthetic experience.

 Context is everything... Or almost.

By percentage of usage:
Evernote-style single-grid filter -- 85%
Quick Search (for searching entire database) -- 10%
Search grid -- 5%

For me it would be more :

Evernote-style single-grid filter -- 40%

Quick Search (for searching entire database) -- And actually uses the search grid too to display choices -->  50%

"Search grid" (I guess that you meant the "find" feature?) -- 5%

I actually do a lot of "full database" search : when I search I often don't even want to bother opening the right grid first, so quick search is the best option. Just a matter of habit I guess. (And, thinking about it : EverNote's search is a full database search too)

Searching inside the grid is convenient when I want to instantly find specific text strings inside the current grid. In this case Switching to Quick search feels a tad awkward, and typing
TextFields ALIKE "%whatever%"
works but is not exactly quick. Still : Quick search works very fast, and I'm usually able to find stuff very rapidly.

when it comes to real filtering power though... Evernotes searching features are rudimentary in comparison!

The Quick Search feature in SN is much more useful than the Search grid, but I also have the same issues that you stated in your suggestions (especially the thing about unique item display).  Here's how I see myself using the search features in SN, assuming the Evernote-style grid box gets implemented:

Did you try the newest build? More reliable than ever, and the quick search window has been tweaked : there's now a "non detailed" view that's (IMO) much easier to "read". Other features are to be expected soon!  :)

Search is maybe the most important feature on a clipboard manager with hundreds of clips saved.

I agree.

Mouser : I've always wondered if it could be possible to link farr to CHS. I use both hamradio's KlipKeeper and CHS, but end up using KK a bit more because it's so easy to find clips with farr -- but I'm thorned : CHS so much powerful...

There are many posts/threads on Acronis true image on DC. I personally Use Acronis, but an older version, and never had a problem with  it. The consensus is usually that newer versions are always buggy and that it takes a little while before they're ironed out.

I don't have a burner to make backup cd's. What choises do i have?

Then, I hope you either have 1- a big hard drive or 2- an external one. Otherwise that doesn't leave you with many options.  RollBack Rx or FirstDefense-ISR Workstation like cranioscopical suggested, maybe? But you'll still be limited by the amount of available space on your hard drive.

« Last post by Armando on March 27, 2008, 07:18 PM »
And... so? what happened?  :)

To be able to boot into Linux, you need to first make sure that your Flash Drive will boot in general... Did you try this test?

If that doesn't work there's likely a problem with one of these : 1- your USB device as such (corrupt boot sector or master boot record, incompatible device...), 2- your BIOS settings (did you try to turn off quick boot in the BIOS?), 3- The process of making your device bootable (through makeboot.bat ), etc.

[...] fsutil reported the file system as dirty. I have then tried booting into Linux and NTFS-3g would not mount the drive but instead told me to start Windows and scan the disk for errors. You can force it to mount anyway, but you will never accidentally do so...thankfully :)

Same experience here.

And I trust ntfs3g for "file sharing" with windows -- never had one problem, and never heard of file loss with it recently. Performance numbers might not look impressive, but in day to day usage, it's really not bad at all. Really.

(BTW : I thought ntfs-3g supported journaling... or at least partially...Just can't find where I read that... hummmm...)

Really, it's nothing. I played with jgpaiva's script (that he made for a farr plugin) and added a few little things from Blue Onion Software's FreeSnap... If you look at the script, you'll probably also find that's not hard to modify to your liking.

Living Room / Re: So how long IS too long for a thread.
« Last post by Armando on March 25, 2008, 08:16 PM »
I must say that I don't usually like threads that are tooooo long. The reason is quite simple  : it takes me too much time and energy to read and extirpate the good/needed buried stuff. Ahem : the notetaking and SQLNotes threads are quite a long read, and they're probably not always that... interresting... but there are some occasional gems in there. I'm quite happy I didn't stumble on them when they were already... 35 pages long !  :o

I've come late to some very long threads and sometimes, when the subject interests me enough, have read the whole thread. Usually going backwards in time first and occasionally going through again forwards to make sure I have fully followed it.

I'm sure many of us do that... I certainly do that pretty often, ahah.

in all seriousness, do you think if we added the "ignore thread" option to the forum, so people could mark threads as those that shouldnt show up in "unread topics" list, it might help this situation?

hummm... Could be useful. When I'm not interested in a thread, I often never look at it again. But, a the same time, it does happen that a thread I was not interested in suddenly catches my attention because a specific member posts something in it, or just because the threa gets more and more participation (and so I'm thinking "hummm... I wonder why this thread is getting so much attention...").

So... I'd probably end up not using that option very often... in fear of missing a precious bit of info or even a good laugh!  ;D

I've always been amazed how people focus on cameras as ways of taking pictures rather than as tremendously versatile and portable data capture devices.

At some point I tried "scanning" parts of very wide books like that (they wouldn't fit in my scanner). Quite a hard endeavor... I guess I just didn't have the right equipment -- if I had, it would've been damn quick!

I tend to digitalize everything...  :-[

@superboyac : I've seen on one of your screenshots that you seemed to have transfered your EverNotes notes... Is that really it? And if yes, how did you achieve that?

Then I realised that the easiest and most comprehensive approach would actually be to photograph the fronts and backs of the bottles and just load the photos into Evernote. No need to write, no need to type, no need to worry about fields etc.

Nice idea.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but it's a great idea:

If you really want to steal Evernote users away, put a docked search box (find as you type of course) on the toolbar.  I know there is already all of the other filters up there, but this box will search every item in just the grid that is currently displayed and filter accordingly.  That's basically how Evernote works anyway.  If you consider Evernote to be one grid, then the evernote search box just searches every single character of that grid and filters the grid accordingly.
The filter bar is great and everything, but sometimes (most of the time in my case) you just want to quickly find that one word you're looking for.  You don't want to think about which field its in or anything like that.  That's what makes Evernote so great--you just type the word you're looking for and that entire list filters down to a few items.

Yep, I've asked for this a couple times... ALmost exaclty the same thing.

Quick Search (ctrl+q) is already pretty good, but I suggested a couple ways of "improving" it there :

and
http://www.sqlnotes....e/posts/Default.aspx

I also put something in mantis : http://mantis.sqlnot....net/view.php?id=146
