You'll be happy to hear Jody that I'm unable to crash or freeze it

I'm not exhaling just yet but this is a good sign.  Thank you for testing.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Seemingly simple media player request
« Last post by skwire on September 09, 2014, 07:43 AM »
Media Player Classic will do most of what you want:

1) Play video files in full screen on second monitor.
2) Display JPEG files.  TIFFs won't display but you convert them to JPEG beforehand, no?
3) Won't auto-advance after a JPEG -- just use hotkeys.

Just build your playlist like this:

Tom, would you mind giving this a test and see if you can trigger that freeze-whilst-resizing bug?

General Software Discussion / Re: Way to hide a desktop icon temporarily?
« Last post by skwire on September 03, 2014, 02:57 PM »
If the "icon" is indeed a shortcut it will "disappear" if the Hidden attribute is set.  As an experiment I made a shortcut to cmd.exe and checked the Hidden attribute.  It winked out when I hit the Apply Button.  :)

I actually did think of this earlier but, if you're like me, you have "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" option enabled so this method wouldn't work.

No, thanks but that's not it. That hack is all or nothing. I would like to be able to schedule any individual icon to reappear later as a visual alarm (albeit on the desktop, not 'always on top') and theoretically at completely different times each.

Desktop icons can be either actual files or shortcuts (which are actually LNK files).  So, short of moving particualr files to, say, a temp folder and back to the desktop on a schedule, which seems a bit hackish, I don't think what you want is elegantly possible.

At the bottom of this page, you'll find a download for a tiny app that toggles the desktop's icons.  That, coupled with a few entries in the built-in Windows Task Scheduler applet, should be able to accomplish what you want.  Or, were you looking for something more custom?

Living Room / Re: Game (& reviews) industry's silent scandal

Maybe I'm too old or just old-school when it comes to stuff like this but my feelings are:

  • Good grief, do folks keep nothing private anymore?
  • I would be thoroughly embarrased to have aired my own dirty laundry like this in public.  Hell, I felt embarassed after reading just a couple of paragraphs; I couldn't even finish it.
  • It's apalling to me that garbage like this is worthy of the viral explosion that results from it.  What a waste of time.

In regards to game review scores, it's just like anything else you purchase in life: Caveat emptor, baby.  Caveat emptor.  Do your homework.  As wraith808 said, wait for some user reviews.  Think about it for a while.  Ultimately, however, you're the one that pulls the trigger when buying a game so, if a game doesn't meet your expectations, accept it, forget about it, and move on.   :D  Remember, it's just a game.    ;)

Did that all sound too curmudgeonly?  Have I actually reached that stage in life?  Hahahahahaha.   :P

Disclaimer: I am 40 years old and, while not a private person at all, have never had a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or <insert social network> account.  However, I feel somewhat qualified to have an opinion on the aforementioned based on having been around the internet for a long, long time (with Usenet posts dating back to the very early 1990s).

Post New Requests Here / Re: Finding the path of a file on your computer
« Last post by skwire on September 01, 2014, 01:06 PM »
The OP appears to be more interested in verifying what the target(s) of file I/O sessions that are currently active is/are...before the relevant application is closed.

I ran the following test:

  • Started up Pathfinder.
  • Started up Word.  Entered some text.  Saved the file as test.docx.  Did not close Word at this time.
  • Right-clicked the Pathfinder icon in my tray.  Verified that test.docx appeared in the menu.  Word is still open at this time.

Now, I do agree that not all opened folders or files get added to the Recent folder.  However, it seems that most do and that might be good enough for spectrekitty.

So I'd like a utility I could run that would tell me the complete path for that file. Please don't laugh - I know it's simplistic...

A tray utility that showed RECENT files and RECENT folders when clicked would solve this and be a nice coding snack..

Give this a try:  http://skwire.dcmemb...nacks/Pathfinder.zip

Unpack the archive and run Pathfinder.exe.  The program adds an icon to your tray that you can right click and it will display a menu of the ten most recent entries (full paths) in your Windows Recent folder.  Selecting one of the menu items copies that path to the clipboard.  However, this can easily be changed to open said menu item (or give a choice of the two).  If you want to display more or fewer than ten menu items, choose Options from the menu, adjust the value in the INI file and save it, and then choose Reload from the tray menu.  I've tested this in W7/64 adn XP/32 (VM) and it seems to work okay.

Yes. It's a good start (for the first version) but this (suggested) application should not be limited (only) to the output though.

Hmmm...not sure what else you'd want out of this tool.

However, maybe columns should be opt-in. End-users should select which columns to be displayed.

Column order and widths are saved so, if you don't want to see a column, you would simply set it to zero-width.  Here's a teaser screenshot so far:

There are more advanced kinds of electronics construction kits for older kids who might want more of a challenge, like this one, which uses wires: http://www.amazon.co...Center/dp/B0035XSZDI

I had one of these as a kid.  Loved it.

columns would be nice.

For sure.  I foresee something very similar to my PDFInfoGUI tool.

Interesting tool that does the job and it could be used in the "process". I'm guessing a GUI could be made based on this tool.

Yep, quite easily.  I assume you would like all bits of information listed in columns?  Example output from the CLI tool:

Anuran actually is like "magically useful" for me.

I haven't worked on it in quite some time, so that's good to hear.  It's definitely a unique application.
1272
So I suppose this is the solution for the time being -- or is anyone aware of a tool that combines the features of Anuran ("nag me for descriptive text regularly") and a Titlebar tracker ("record the time spent in your projects' files") into ONE application?

This is most certainly possible.  However, if I were to do it, I'd rewrite it from scratch as I wouldn't want to modify Anuran too much from its current functionality.  It was written for a DC member based upon a very specific set of requirements.

At its core, something like this is not too hard to write.  The problem with apps like these is the amount of options and reporting that is to be expected of them.  That's where the headaches come into play.

Skwire Empire / Re: Release: sWeather (tray-based weather app)
« Last post by skwire on August 25, 2014, 10:33 AM »
ghacks today (8/24) has a review of 9 desktop weather apps and Martin gives sWeather the top recommendation.

Thanks for the heads up, Mike.  =]

Weather app's can get really elaborate (and often beautiful), but many of us are interested in something lightweight, clean, efficient, and free of ads, and sWeather just rocks for that.
Congratulations, skwire

Thanks, mouser.  sWeather is a favourite of mine (are we allowed to have our own apps as favs?   :P) and it's rather humbling to see it get that kind of recognition.
