General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager

Just to note: DonL is busy working on XYPlorer 8, which will feature, amongst other things dual pane  :-*

It's getting chilly here in Hell... ;D

Should be downright frosty in the coming weeks. Watch for it...  :o

Wow! Is that the price of DocPro these days?! I bought it at $29 years ago and it's autoupgraded for free ever since, so I'd not noticed the price creeping up.

PDF Professional is good, and is frequently on sale now. It's also available in stores, usually cheaper than online, if that helps.

BTW Ovis is a German company, so you might find boxed versions in stores as well...

I hope to see more of you

Sorry, silly attempt at humor -- nothing to see here, please move along  :P

;D That is actually pretty funny - sadly, I'm several cups of coffee away from sentience, so didn't get it at first  :-[

Hi Tom - I was using an Ovis application called PDF-DocPro. which works "OK", but since moving to Vista I have bothered installing it. Instead, I rely on Nuance's PDF Converter Professional 5, which has a powerful "Optimize" feature that compresess pdfs for me...

Check out his yearbook quote: "The probability distribution of me being awake at any given hour is uniform"  ;D

A belated welcome to all recent posters as well (Ordstrin, AussieRodney, Debian, and Kamel) - great to have you all here and I hope to see more of you    8)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: List of disc catalogers
« Last post by Darwin on March 05, 2009, 07:36 AM »
Yeah, your experience is similar to mine, Jim - I back up everything to external HDs now: OS and software instals to disc images and documents and software installers to folders. However, I *did* backup everything to CD-R for about 10 years, so have about 300 discs lying around. I was never able to cram all the contents onto the disc label with a Sharpie, so bought WhereIsIt? to catalogue what I had and where.

Yeah, sorry - I wasn't clear: I did actually mean data cds and dvds. That is, the contenst of them  :)

oh to be the contestest of the DVD's (with apologies to all :D

I'll excuse this post by saying - look at the next one...

I meant to do that... that's obviously why I put a smiley face at the end of it. No other explanation worth looking at, is there? Well, IS there? No. I thought not. Moving along...

The main value of WhereIsIt?, in my opinion, is that it saves a list of all of the contents of you media in one searchable location. So, you don't have to have the CD/DVD in a drive to review its contents - indeed, you can have 200 CD's and DVD's indexed and available fron one file. It's always worked flawlessly for me in this capacity.

No need to apologise for reviving this (or any other) thread  :) I'm now using Dopus 9 exclusively because I am in austerity mode on my Vista 64 machine (ie I want to keep it as light as possible - don't want to gum it up with redundant software installations) and I love it.

WRT your question, though, what are you looking for in a file manager? There are many choices (the poll is far from comprehensive)...!

That would be appreciated too of course, but it won't add to the fundraiser thermometer, only "new" money coming into the site does that.

Ah... I was going to ask about that! I want to see that thermometer increase, so will inject some fresh cash into the site  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Anal Program Monitor/Firewall
« Last post by Darwin on March 01, 2009, 04:09 PM »
I have a licence for Sunbelt Firewall but gave up on it... because it drove me demented at the outset (as Chris notes)! Perhaps I should give it a chance? However, like f0dder, I've never had any trouble using the Windows provided firewall in either flavour (ie XP or Vista). Knock. On. Wood. Ouch!

Hi spectateswamp - welcome to DC

We love having developers drop in and participate on the DC boards. However, to be fair to everyone that posts/lurks here, you really should make clear your relationship to the applications that you are recommending. The above is only your second post, and it is the second that mentions a program that (it appears that) you develop without clearly indicating without indicating  :-[ how you are related to the program.

Sadly, it was also the only DTS app that did a (somewhat) decent job of letting me search the FF cache. Everything else failed spectacularly. I un/installed it thrice yesterday before I quit in frustration. Now that I've had a night's sleep I've convinced myself to give it one last try and see if I can work around its idio(t)syncrasies, somebody shoot me!

1268
I know that a lot of people swear by Google

Literally!

It has one of the clunkiest, most fcuked up interface I've seen on any app... right from the unconventional installer, to the settings pages that open in a browser, to a mandatory widgets module being installed, to the main executable trying to call home _after_ I had uninstalled it, the whole GDS experience was really bizarre and infuriating!

 ;D

Thanks for taking command of this for us, Chris

Pity about the upgrades... but generous nonetheless!

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!
« Last post by Darwin on February 27, 2009, 11:02 AM »
Got an email today from Collectorz saying how much they love to hear from their customers and inviting me to fill in a survey.

What a lot of BS - I have no intention of massaging their egos and I know any negative comments will simply get ignored.

Ha, ha - got the same e-mail this morning and had the same thought as I consigned it to electronic hell... I dropped in here to post about it, but Carol had beaten me to it  ;D

6,530,000 hits on google.ca...

Don't you just love people that post to rub it in?

 ;D

Try clearing your cache and restarting your browser, no?

Your only brother's only brother sounds like a real character - whatever happened to him? Is he on the straight and narrow now?

Yeah, Darwin
As a pro, he was inclined to run his activities like a business. More to the point, he had an uncanny knack for avoiding trouble. Word is, he gave it all up about 20 years ago with only minor psychic scars.
 ;)

:)

BTW I had a pretty big crush on Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) myself when I was about 8 or 9. Didn't quite "get", at the time, that the shows I was watching were already 10 years old or so at the time  ;D
1273
How about Fundraiser USB drivers?

Not a bad idea - but should definitely be done as prizes! As stated above, I think that whatever ideas we come up with/agree to should have a truly minimal impact on DC's accounts!

I suspect that this is only for residents of the US though... I did read the EULA and there is no mention of it, however, when you try to set up shipping there are no non-US options (APO boxes are for members of the US military and their families overseas, so you have to have access to a military base, embassy or consulate).
