FYI, mag.nolia does pretty much like del.icio.us but it also copies a local version of each page you bookmark so if it dissapears, you can still see it in there.

Is there any software here that can synch with mag.nolia / del.icio.us? They kind of negate the need for this kind of soft, but in many browsers (all but firefox with del.icio.us bar) it sucks to bookmark pages in these services (you need to visit a "post" page, yet one more client/server communication!).

I forgot to mention that after losing kmixer.dll, video played with no sound, but KMplayer solved it in one option.... then, remebering that Jriver MC plays video and has ASIO, I installed it and tested it with ASIO4ALL and my audigy. It didn't apply the ASIO settings for video (bummer) and the ASIO implementation sucked (clipping even at maximum sample size!, stuttering!). So I uninstalled it immediately.

I'm looking at the above paragraph. I bet most human beings would consider it random, nonsense words :). This is getting too geeky. I'm out.

One of the things I did to improve quality was to bypass the OS's control entirely (no kmixer.dll at all). It does help, but I have lost the ability to play any sounds with any non-asio device (see http://www.un4seen.c.../forum/?topic=6998.0).

Foobar eats CPU and memory like there is no tomorrow (100mb + 100mb VM??), resampling adds +10%, etc... but for now I'm letting it hog resources...

BTW, are these numbers normal (for a library of 35000 tracks?)?
1254
well, right now I'm in foobar heaven. It took me 2-3 days of struggling, but I'm impressed. bye MM, xmplay for now...

One question.
Is there any way to switch workbooks, now that ctrl + tab has been overriden?
You can always go to view > switch windows (xl 2007) for a list, but that is pretty inconvenient.

Maybe an extra shortcut such as ctrl shift tab would be a good addition? Is there any other native xl shortcut?

Same here. No VS debugging here.
It is a zombie process that not even windows process explorer can kill.
What did you do to kill it?

General Software Discussion / XMplay 3.4 released
« Last post by urlwolf on April 03, 2007, 02:40 PM »
Yay!
Here is the changelog:
new stuff includes output plugins, library directory monitoring, fullscreen visualisations, nested archive support, increased EQ bands, embedded CUE sheet support, CDDB info caching and a bunch of other stuff.

Here's the full "History" list...

* Output plugin system
* Optional resampling and downmixing
* Library directory monitoring
* Fullscreen visualisations
* Recursive/nested archive support
* EQ increased to 9 bands
* Actual filetype (not just extension) shown in playlist/library
* Per-extension saved settings replaced by per-filetype
* Ignoring of unwanted filetypes when adding new files
* DSP locking (prevent overriding by saved settings)
* Playlists in the library
* Library mass-tagging
* "Age" record added to library
* Waiting for track endings to decay
* Support for embedded CUE sheets
* Choice of CDDB info when there are duplicates
* CDDB info caching
* Info window text magnification
* Bubble text size configuration
* Sorting of search results by filename
* M3U playlist saving
* Scanning for playlists in HTML pages
* Drag'n'dropping between playlist and library
* MOD channel muting via middle-click in pattern display
* MOD auto-loop options
* Year tag extraction from MODs
* MOD signature shown in "General" info
* Auto-amp automatically disabled when replaygain is active
* Extended output buffer size range
* Balance shortcuts
* MOD interpolation/ramping/surround shortcuts
* Random played tracking always retained (option removed)
* Skinning improvements (see skinning kit)

With the introduction of output plugin support come new DirectSound and ASIO output plugins.

To better support nested archives, the archive plugin system has been updated, and so updated 7Z / LHA / PP / RAR / WAD / XPK / ZIP archive plugins are also available now (the rest will probably be updated later). Old archive plugins will still work too, but not as well.

The FLAC and MIDI input plugins have also been updated. The FLAC plugin has been updated to the FLAC 1.1.4 core, and also now supports embedded CUE sheets. The MIDI plugin contains a lot of improvements, notably reverb and chorus effects, resonant low-pass filters, and support for portamento and a bunch of XG/GS sysex/NRPN.

All the plugin systems have been updated, but while old input and archive plugins are still supported, old DSP plugins are not. For those using the Scrobbler (last.fm) plugin, an update should be available later today/tomorrow.

The only thing X1 won't do as far as I can tell is index removable drives - my USB drive doesn't even show up in the drives list to be indexed and network folders are disabled in the free client - though they tell you to contact them if you want that functionality - not sure if that is available for free or if you have to buy a different client. It used to be included as standard.
-Carol Haynes link=topic=7925.msg56361#msg56361
That's a problem for me. I use a laptop, with most storage as exteral. I tried using a shortcut, no dice. Removable drives should be indexed.

I quite like the fact that X1 does highlighting. What's the use of knowing that a word appears in a doc that is maybe 10000 words!?

Can WDS do that? If it can, it is not very obvious in the options.
1261
I'm not a business person, I don't have the apptitude for it, but my real fear about these things, which is completely absent in paul's article, is the role that having well-positioned contacts/friends plays, and the importance of being chummy with heavily networked people.

You should try "never eat Alone", by Keith Ferrazzi. Maybe it's not that diffiicult to do that kind of networking, and you could benefit a lot from very little effort in that direction.

Mind you, not that I do it, but... I agree with Ferrazzi in the value of contacts.

And another question regarding how those sync tools work: let's say I want to sync drive A to drive B. When I start the process, will those files, that are still on drive B but already deleted on A will be deleted on B *before* additional files from A will be copied to B?

SFFS does that. I think it's called mirror mode.

AmazonS3 is a service that offers paid-for storage. You pay only the space you use.
I have a dreamhost account and don't need it, but it may be interesting for some.

Perry, for some reason, when I moved yout addin to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns, my 'other' favorite addin stopped working.

It's ASAP utilities:

Do you have any idea why?

I used to be a Jriver MC user.
What put me off (and made me find better software for my needs: mediaMonkey) was the fact that they delete people's posts in their forum, and even mock some requests. It is a very closed environment, and the Jriver people (the founder particularly) treats other people disrespectfully. I dare you to find a post on anything negattive about MC :). That is morally repugnant. Compare this to the environment (and forum) for Mediamonkey: user scripts created daily, people sharing, amicable questions and answers.

Plus, Jriver charges you every major upgrade and make you beta test for them. It is true that it is probably the best integrated media center (it handles pics, movies, and music), but for each of these tasks there are better (and free) alternatives. After paying upgrades for 2-3 years and being witness of some behavior I wouldn't tolerate in their forum, I left for better pastures, and never looked back.

I have both syncBack SE and backup4All. For a while I had a license for  Genie Backup Manager (which I returned). I have tested Cobian an others (it's not trivial to test this kind of software).

My recommendation is Super Flexible File Synchronizer (SFFS). We talked about it here. You can check some ideas for a perfect backup tool here.

I find SFFS the fastest, most reliable, and ... well most flexible. The developer answers mail within minutes, and actually implement features suggested!

I wouldn't discard getting a DC discount, since there are a few of us already interested...

In fact, mostly any program that has tabs implements this kind of 'alt tab' behavior. Excel does have tabs, although they cannot be relocated.

I wonder why M$ didn't think of this before... weird. My browser works that way, my editor works that way... why do we have to do contorsions to get this basic functionality in excel?
1267
Thanks, I'll make it permanent!
So I reckon you prefer the browser history paradigm, right?
I still like the "win alt tab" better.
Is this easy to implement?

Testing now your very handy FollowReference...

Here is an Ahk hack that does exactly what I want. As you see it's not trivial.

http://www.autohotke....php?p=113849#113849

Credit goes to wOxxOm, its coder.
1269
Hmm, testing now, it seems that it goes back in history, but that is not exaclty mimicking the typical alt + tab behavior in windows.

example. We have tabs A-C, and we click A, B, C. We are in C now, doing some work. I want to go back to B, so I hit ctrl tab. check some data, then I want to go back to C, and hit ctrl tab (as in windows alt tab). The current code takes me to A, not to C.

I think the history array should be updated after I hit ctrl tab (or as it is right now,  CTRL+ALT+TAB). That way, the "last visited" tab will be the expected one.

I think there is a name for this kind of list in CS, not sure I remember the name (fifo?). STL in C++ has a template that implements exactly this....

1270
You are right  :D
 CTRL+ALT+TAB is a contorsion for me.
I'll try to change it on the code.
Then, how do I make this change "permanent" (i.e., opening with excel everytime)?
1272
Their mail support is inconsistent at best.
When I bought this tool, it took them about a week to send the license (I posted about it here).

Later, I asked for a feature (global shortcut), and never got an answer.
You may have better luck, or things may have changed.

I think you can tell it when to index.
I don't see much disk activity since I installed it, I must have been able to swtich off indexing (don't remember how).
1274
Hi Perry,

Yes, I'm  using Navigate.xls, but not getting the "back to recently viewed worksheets" functionality. I get exactly the same functionality as when I do ctrl + page up/down. Is this what I should be getting?

Maybe there is some addin installed that is messing up with yours, even when turned off?

Thanks

General Software Discussion / Graham does it again: Why not to start a startup
« Last post by urlwolf on April 02, 2007, 04:31 AM »
http://paulgraham.com/notnot.html

As always, some amazing bits here:
To almost everyone except criminals, it seems an axiom that if you need money, you should get a job. Actually this tradition is not much more than a hundred years old. Before that, the default way to make a living was by farming. It's a bad plan to treat something only a hundred years old as an axiom. By historical standards, that's something that's changing pretty rapidly.

We may be seeing another such change right now. I've read a lot of economic history, and I understand the startup world pretty well, and it now seems to me fairly likely that we're seeing the beginning of a change like the one from farming to manufacturing.

(...)

That's ultimately what drives us to work on Y Combinator. We want to make money, if only so we don't have to stop doing it, but that's not the main goal. There have only been a handful of these great economic shifts in human history. It would be an amazing hack to make one happen faster.

This hacker mentality is really impressive. Hackers can take the role of contemporary 'greek tragedy heros' if one thinks of them that way. They make things out of thin air, like magicians and gods. And they are even morally outstanding, since they do it not for money but for some internal motivation of improving their lives and those of the people around them.
