General Software Discussion / Re: Rambooster. Junk?
« Last post by cmpm on March 28, 2009, 04:53 AM »
I'd like to run programs/apps without having to restart them for any reason. I shouldn't have to. XP's management does not work for every situation or computer.

But you have to restart firefox sometimes, with or without cleanmem or any other help.
Cleaning temp files periodically as well as clearing the cache helps with mem and cpu.

I don't know what all fodder is saying about the controls he speaks of. Nor do I understand how all this really works.

I have found that I can keep running my pentium 3 600mhz 3 sticks of 256 (max for this comp) with multiple programs in the background as well as Firefox in the tray longer and running smoother with CleanMem.
Plus opening other programs at the same time.

But mainly I have it cause I have minimize to tray and minimize to tray enhancer for Firefox which are valuable to me. Which before CleanMem, Firefox would run up to 150000 to 200000 in a short period of an hour or more with use and not drop down. With CleanMem it hovers around 50000 to 80000. With going up as used more-opening multiple tabs or watching videos, though not as drastic as before. And CleanMem knocks it back down. Without harm to my system. Less restarting Firefox, a lot less, though it still needs done at times.

It's the only memory program I would recommend at this time, if asked. And I've tried a few.

I don't believe it would be fair to call it a ram booster, cause it's not. More like a little extra management.

For the rest of your post... the maximum memory saving you got was 100kb? Waaauw. Even if you had 20 processes that were trimmed like that, you'd save a whopping 2MB of memory.

Steven-
Which is quite a bit on my current 1MB system (twice the total memory !)

Yeah I think the bees are not buzzing quite right here.

I'm guessing a 1gb system, trimming 100mb/100,000kb.
Not sure though.

The green up near the MFT is programs I've installed since running Paragon.

Hi MilesAhead again,  ;D

No I didn't run it in safe mode.
After setting the options and starting it,
it prompted to restart the computer.
Which I clicked, so it then ran before windows loaded.

One thing I like is that it separated out the MFT files section.
And it wasn't in the middle of all my other files like it was.
Seems to me that it should be that way anyway.

I set it to Directories at the beginning of the drive-Ascending.

I use Classic Compact theme,
https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/3699
with the Classic Compact Options add on.
https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/6969

In the options the scroll bar can be changed to Windows default.
Which is very good since the bar was so narrow with just the theme without the options add on.

I use Foxmarks which is going to be Xmarks, but I'm not too sure about it yet. I received an email today informing me of the changes now and to come. Seems to have some social aspect.

the email-

Dear Foxmarks User,

Foxmarks is becoming Xmarks. We're not just changing our name, we're also enhancing our browser add-on and web site with new capabilities.

This email will provide you with some details about what has changed in our new version along with instructions on how to upgrade to Xmarks today.

Since starting Foxmarks, our goal has been to aggregate and analyze the bookmarks we manage to create something never done before: a bookmark-powered web discovery service. Last month you saw our first hint at this new service with the launch of "Suggested Tags". Today, we're proud to tell you about the launch of Xmarks, designed to help you search smarter and uncover the best sites on the web.

Upgrade to Xmarks now, or read on to learn more.

Upgrade to Xmarks Now

Uncover Great Websites
With the upgrade from Foxmarks to Xmarks, you'll still enjoy bookmark sync, backup and all the features you love about Foxmarks. In addition, Xmarks adds new discovery features:

1. Smarter Search
Xmarks will highlight the three sites in your Google results that have been bookmarked by the most people; this is a quick and easy way to tell which sites are most valued by real people like you.

2. Site Info
Xmarks adds a small blue information icon in your browser location bar. Click it to learn more about the site you are on and see recommendations for the top five similar sites. This is a great way to uncover the best of the web.

3. Xmarks.com
Visit Xmarks.com from any browser to write your own site reviews and to see even more similar site recommendations.

Learn more about these new features.

Powered by Bookmarks
Xmarks is powered by over half a billion bookmarks created by millions of people like you. Our discovery engine aggregates and analyzes all bookmarks in order to compute things like "people who bookmarked this site, also bookmarked these similar sites". This process removes all personally-identifiable information from bookmarks and ignores sites that very few people have bookmarked. Rest assured, we take privacy very seriously and you can read our privacy policy here.

What's Next?
Xmarks is currently Firefox only, but it syncs perfectly with your existing Foxmarks Web account and the Foxmarks add-ons for Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. You'll also notice that Foxmarks.com is still a separate site. In the coming weeks we'll be fully rebranding the Foxmarks site and releasing an Xmarks upgrade for our Internet Explorer and Safari add-ons.

We strongly encourage you to upgrade now to take advantage of these new features. If you do nothing, you'll receive notification of an available upgrade through Firefox in the coming weeks.

We're still hard at work on sync and are committed to extending our leadership position in browser synchronization. To that end, we need your help to prioritize the many items on our sync roadmap. Please take a minute and answer this short survey -- it's your chance to have a voice in how we evolve our product.

Thank you for choosing Foxmarks and get ready for the new and improved Xmarks. If you'D like to send us feedback or need help through the upgrade process, please write to us on our forums.

Thank you,
The Xmarks Team

-end email

I'm not exactly sure if it's a legit email.
It has download links for upgrading to Xmarks.
I haven't checked it out, just got home from work.

I like Foxmarks like it is, but it may be an improvement.
Or become something irritating as well......or resource hungry.
I do like the fact of syncing to different browsers like they speak of in the email. But the extra info built in will have to prove itself, and hopefully an opt out option for the extra stuff in my browser.
1256
hm, bummer

Yeah 3 is very different then 2 I believe.
Don't what exactly would stop that though.
Maybe someone will pick up on it.

MilesAhead

-Bookmark Sync n Sort-

I bumped up the version compatibility to 4.0.
It works with FireFox 3 on my machine.
All the options and menus are there.
But I didn't set it up.

It's really a big improvement-FF 3, plus more security.
Give it whirl if you want to.
You can always switch back.

Change the .zip at the end of the file name to .xpi.
The forum will not accept .xpi files.
But it will for zip files.

After changing the extension -a must-, just drag and drop onto your open Firefox 3.0.7, and the install window will pop up just like any normal addon for Firefox.
1258
@MilesAhead

In the bookmark dropdown menu you can select 'organize bookmarks'.
And export them to a location of your choice
you probably knew that

But the reason for this post is this knowledge of auto export on exit.

You may have known that as well though.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Request : hightlight pen feature

Cool, but keep the options discussed too if you can. Putting a border with the highlight seems to make the text sharper or these eyes are screwy. And the shadow seems to dim the text a bit.

A pen tool with adjustable width and color seems to be the request, keeping a set transparency without lost text sharpness.
I think anyway. A separate tool for text I guess.

Having the adjustable box can be used with other things as well, pictures, desktop shots, as well as text. Brilliant ideas built into Screenshot Capture.

I keep my transparency at 55 usually.
An added feature is the transparency adjust aspect.
As well as changing the color.
The transparency effect can be used to block info you don't want in your shot, which is pretty cool and convenient as well.

If Faststone is better for you, that's cool.
Use what suits your needs.

After you capture, the popup selection box will appear. Select "Keep Image and Show", and you have the options built into screenshotcapture and there is a highlighting option on the right side in the list of tools.
1262
Just the options I listed is what I saw, tomos,
but there could be others. Doubt it though.
It's a simple interface, with drop down options.
But I didn't see the amount of options that jkdefrag has.
I'd have to run it again to get shots of it.
And I don't have the time right now.

http://www.paragon-s...rag/screenshots.html

It seems safe to me, but there is some complaints I reckon.
It does take a long time.
Be prepared to take at least 12 hours for it to complete.
Depending on size of disk and contents.

According to jkdefrag's analyze map it's all packed in tight.
Tighter then with jk.
As far as performance gain, I don't think I've noticed any.
But I keep this dude pretty clean anyway.....
1263
I got this program and have some of their others.

You actually get the full dfrag program.
Not just the special free version.
And yes it will take a while to run.
You must reboot so it has custody of the drive.
To stop it you can press esc or control c.

My advice is to keep your other defrag program and use it.
Like jkdefrag or whatever.
So it doesn't have a lot to do, although mine took about 7 hours for 20gb of actual files on a 80gb drive.

But there are options to choose.
You can put your directories at the beginning or end of the drive.
Ascending or descending.
Or you can leave the directories where they are.

So it is a major defrag utility.
I don't believe it was meant for vista and up.
Can't be certain of that though.

Someone send me a Vista machine and I'll try it :)
But send a way to reformat and reload Vista too...lol...

I found this site with some possible good tips.

Have you tried iPhoto yet?
It is for windows.
And I have just started experimenting with it.
Seems fast and to the point with good options.

There is also TaggedFrog that has recently been updated,
it works as well with pics and docs and more.

Ram being occupied without use is a waste also.

Which is the point of all this about CleanMem, I believe.
1270
notice in shot 4 it can rename file if it already exists when restoring

in the first shot you can choose the file extensions or type to backup

hope this helps, ask more if you want to
1271
yeah - let me get a couple of shots
i have syncplicity, dropbox and mozy all on the same comp.
They don't conflict.

Yeah, fodder, and XP does it's job so well...

I don't know why you don't even try it.
If you haven't.
With your knowledge you could post some real figures.
1273
You might want to test Mozy.
It does file types.
And just use it for the revisions.
