Is it just me?  No matter what I do to search newegg.com it goes back to the Cyber Monday page with an input line for your email address.  Even if I click on one of the categories it goes back to the promo page.  I suspect sales will be lower than expected as they are not allowing anyone to buy anything!

I just finished reading Faster Than Light by John Lucas again.

It may have been written for high school students judging by the humor.  But I enjoyed it.  The "exit interview" on the first page got me hooked.  If you hate the first couple of pages move on because the whole story is done in the same style.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Alert on File/Folder Access

Unless you suspect the malware is going to masquerade as a system file I don't know how you would guess a filename that would lure out the malware.  If it is wholesale deleting stuff I guess both ends of the alphabet may be a good idea.  Otherwise the goat file may be at the end of the list.

I still think making use of VSS is a better approach.  The utility is free.  Where it would not work well is wholesale file creation scenarios.  In that case the system may hang.  But for generic user protection it seems as good as any.

Presumably if something sneaks onto your system it will run as the user who was active when it snuck on, or as SYSTEM.

identifying what USER the process is running under is not so important -- but identifying the PROCESS is.

I'm not arguing that but I wonder if any process that gets around security is going to use high level api calls rather than some sector by sector sneaky techniques.  I would think if the monitor could log it security could stop it.  But av type things are not my forte. :)

I do know that large scale monitoring for file folder change using the apis will bog things badly.  Utilities that do it well probably roll their own techniques.

This looks like it comes pretty close for the monitoring part.  Presumably if something sneaks onto your system it will run as the user who was active when it snuck on, or as SYSTEM.

NirSoft utilities are well done.  I would experriment with monitoring all of C: to find out if this will bog the system.  An alternative may be something like ToolWiz Time Freeze.  All writes to the system partition are redirected to a cache file using Shadow Copy Service of Windows.  When you reboot the changes are gone.  Of course this doesn't save you from tracking cookies as they exist until you reboot.  But it does stop them from continually accumulating.

My we're feeling glib today... Yes I was rushing and meant Windows 10 build 10586. However your definition does have its merits.. :D

I'll say one thing for my Pentium III.  Maybe it only had 128 MB system ram but it never overheated like those Pentium 4s I bought for some reason that escapes me now.  :)

Just did a clean load of 10586 and was pleasantly surprised (read shocked) to be prompted to create a local account by default. No mention of creating/using/enforcing a MS cloud account was to be seen.

10586?  Ain't that there one of them new-fangled Pentup Frustration machines with built in FPU demanding virtual memory?  I didn't know MS took it over from Intel.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RollbackRX Pro 10.4 50% off Black Fri Cyb Mon

https://horizondatas...purl-blackfriday2015

So it goes.  I go for the 25% discount.  A couple weeks later a 50% discount shows up.

But anyway, I don't recommend Rollback RX PC for SSD or those who love to defrag.  I find it useful because System Restore does not work on my Laptop and it has a spinner.

If you like to keep you spinner defragged the only safe way I have found is to uninstall Rollbaxk RX first.  Do all your cleanup routines, defrag, scan for tracking cookies etc..  Then reinstall Rollback.  Also I found it better to turn off all the automatic snapshot defragging and snapshot taking on first boot of the day.  The only "automatic" setting I left enabled is automatically snapshot the current system before rolling back.

I found with the automatic snapshot defrag it could try to defrag stuff already deleted.  Also it makes for faster boots.  If you want a snapshot first boot of the day just take one after all your startup programs are done loading.

Looking back I think the free version would have been enough for me.  The major difference with the Pro is that the free protects C: and that's it.  With the Pro you have the option to protect all partitions on the physical system drive.  Although non Windows OS are not supported.

I typically keep only a few snapshots so I could have gotten by with the 7 maximum of the free or Home edition.  But for $50 I'm not crying.  It would be more fun if it didn't require so much maintenance.  But I am glad to have a restore capability.

Edit:  Just for grins I posted on Rollback RX Pro forum asking if they would "roll back" the price to the $34.95 level since it was more or less on the heels of my $51 and change purchase.  So far, no response.  Maybe they don't like puns?  :)

Edit2:  I posted as a bit of a joke(and to post the rollback pun) but they told me to PM them the transaction number.

Edit3:  To give credit where due(pun intended) I got a notice today a refund of $16 and change is in the process of being credited to me.  Very cool.  :)

"Command & Control" is the new drug. And a far more addictive for some people than crack or heroin will ever be.

When news reporters wondered how Henry Kissinger, a short dumpy guy with kinky hair and a big nose, could date Hollywood starlets he explained:  "Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac."  I guess it never goes out of style.  :)

Advanced Recent Access 100% Discount

I thought I would try something third party that tracks recently accessed files/folders etc..

It does not seem to track programs that were run.  But folders documents and files etc..

The scheme seems to be read the Registry on first run to get a list of items to start.  Then the access count is incremented when you open something from the utility.  Opening a folder yourself using explorer does not bump that item up in the list or increase the count.

I'll try it for awhile and see how it goes.  :)

It does seem to be the current version 4.0 not a giveaway of the obsolete 3.x series.

Edit: There is according to the page, 28 days left to get it.  So no panic.  :)

But I've not tried soylent green...
:-\ :-\ That you know of, that is.  Sometimes you can buy mystery meat(s) at the local market(s) :-\ :-\

I suspect most of those are "Soylent Brown."  Just get a nice looking package of ground sirloin for burgers then wait until the next day to take it out of the fridge.  Red #2 wears off quickly.

Yes.  But if you turn yourself from a man into Lucy Liu then you are TransLucent.

TransLucent...I thought that term described what happened to AT&T, after their surgery back in 1996.

After that programs could only have baby bells and whistles.  :)

Yes.  But if you turn yourself from a man into Lucy Liu then you are TransLucent.

A mob is after Pinocchio. When they get him, they're going to string him up.

Obviously he was condemned by a puppet government.

No, they're mad because he tried to marry Annette.

Better for him to take the noose.  She'd be pulling the strings in that marriage.  That is, if they tied the knot.

Check distrowatch.com for release info for the new 64 bit Puppy.  I am downloading now.

Edit.  I am on it now.  Same deal.  No audio.  It does seem to boot faster from stick than the 32 bit version.

^^ Thanks for the TM HowTo.  :)

I have been listening to a "Shaman Healing Chant" track I found on the Tube.  I don't know who does the singing.  They do praise Jesus during the chant.  So for lack of any other identifier I call them "Comanches for Christ."  :)  The harmonies are quite relaxing.

Also now and then I do the Watts method as it requires no preparation.  I dispense with the firm cushion requirement and just get by with whatever I am sitting on.  Also I have never been flexible so I fell no compulsion to fold my legs.  Basically it amounts to staring in a direction that will not provide much input and letting go of thinking in words.  Just zoning out for a minute or two.

  I reckon this might be almost as good as TM (Transcendental Meditation).

The vid was amusing.  I never dabbled in TM.  I did recently see a video where Alan Watts demonstrated his meditation technique.  He sat on a hard cushion with his legs folded staring in front of him and down.  Not thinking of anything.  No music.  Seemed like a good way of avoiding overthinking it since the object was not to thing for a bit.  Also it has the advantage of not paying a guru or taking a class in it.  Can't beat the price.  :)

Wait, What! ...Somebody has stolen my meditation technique and documented it as their own?!? Son-Of-A-Bi... I am totally suing their balls off!!!

I guess what they say is true.  Meditation dissipates worldly concerns and tensions.  Relaxes the psyche.  Elevates us to a plateau of serenity :)
