Here's how most of the software selection works.

Step 1) Desktop environment > Default softwares (environment specific like Gedit with gnome and KATE with KDE etc) >Final DE.

Step 2) Final Desktop environment (edited as per Distro)  > Custom kernel and custom default software > Repository > FInal distro

All the distros branch out after the step 1. So gnome flavor changes when step 2 happens. Same goes for other DE as well.

It is more than a skin. Each has it's own way of managing the UI, File systems and file operations, and many other things.

Other than distrowatch matrix. I don't know if there is feature specific comparison. If you can get anything to work on say fedora, you can get it on debian, ubuntu or any other distro. Just need to compile it from source or use the software that does the compiling from source for you. (For example gdebi etc). Ubuntu, elementary, Suse and Fedora are trying to compete with mainstream OS like Win and Mac so maybe you should checkout what these linux distros offer, If you're looking for comparison on that front.

Yes, but when we're using windows, we play by their rules. And due to desktopshare, we played by their rules for quite some time now. Sure we have other options but not when we are working for windows specific customer. We have no choice than keeping one box running with it and accept the change.

It's another age of UI  in my opinion. We have to get used to new UI from various OS makers. Typical taskbar, menu used to be productive way back but now there are some new UI changes which are hard to adopt but does make you more productive on tablet or similar other modern hardwares. There's nothing we can do other than adapting to this change. I wonder if stardock and similar companies going to cash in on these changes for the folks who don't like such changes or don't want such UI.

Only if you used that feature it becomes dangerous, however you can drop those components and work just fine. I just came across one post where someone was working over a hack to let user choose which lens to keep and remove. So if the commercial lens gets populated, it would be easy to get them out with such fixes. Not a biggy like candy malware IMO.

The thing that comes with ubuntu 12.10 is however a lens which has amazon's aff code. It was made to search amazon listings from unity. That's the new thing, which looks somewhat like FARR. You can compare it with something like say FARR where mouser's ID shows or the plugin developers ID for every amazon listing.

No. It was always there from release 10.04, 3 years back. I am surprised that people found out so late. Same with Mint, gnoppix, mephis and few other distros, none of them have it mentioned on their site.

Google founders are big fan of Steve, there's a reason why google has minimal product folio these days with no Glabs and all. Not to forget, G is loaded with apple fanboys, just take a look at G plus. We live in sadistic world where "if apple does it, thats fair and if others are doing it, that's gotta be unfair". It will stop at the end of 2019 perhaps when apple hype gets over people.

I didn't get you there.

It's new method of revenue generation from where I see the affiliate links. Not all affiliate links tracker data is shared with the affiliate, network keeps it for their own use. So if we have to go with the anonymity issue, blame has to be given not to mozilla and canonical but the networks. As amazon and ebay are not tracking the links (or not showing it to affiliates) as per their public terms, I don't see point of anonymity here unless ofcourse if the other aff networks like Google and CJ or some installwares are used which are known for such activities.

Just to keep things straight, amazon and ebay don't collect any personal information for both affiliates and buyers. Hell, for me amazon shows respective regional channel (like link from canada shows me canadian and US shows US shop) so it's not even demographically monetized yet. When that happens we can shout loud about it. Google Content commerce and Skimlinks (Googles new official affiliate link network) tracks user data and is shown to advertisers for monetizing. Same goes for ebay. Using aff links doesn't make software bad, if that's the case then people need to ditch Mozilla and chrome too. If ubuntu is bad, I wonder why not Mozilla is bad. sigh.

Ironically it is the only thing that gets things done quickly. Look at all the forum, blog and portal software coded in php.
 
Python, ASP and ROR are horribly slow and complicated for novice people to deploy. Just want to say whatever you to learn, avoid sitepoint and wrox books, hardly anything to be learned from these books.

Reading a lot about GIT by the way. I have to use the learned stuff on some fork from github.

Firefox has ebay and amazon URLs encoded in Search since version 5 onwards, that code is rewritten by canonical. On windows and mac, firefox takes the revenue but on ubuntu canonical grabs the affiliate revenue. I am sure each of the linux distro have their own aff code in searchbar. So I don't know integration like that makes any big news.

I agree. The old ink and the perspective on the art is fading. I look at EU vintage art and feel the same. No more that holiday feel in the cards, cartoons or anything. I guess this is because many artists back in the time did this because they loved it and not because they were doing mass production like today's artists to meet their deadlines.

My real *dream* is animation.  But I don't like 3D animation and I don't like flash animation.  The animation I prefer is the really difficult kind...the old classic Looney Tunes.  With the lush painted backdrops and the hand drawn lines, and that beautiful music.  But I don't think I'll ever get to play around with that, it's just too much.  That age is gone.

I don't think that vintage animation or art is gone. Take a look at storybird.com and see how many artists are making it. See if you can add the music around those slides and make your own music storybook? I mean your music+ the available storybird custom slides story.

I don't think this happens with facebook only. I have linkedin and Google+ sending emails on behalf of me for invite. Linked In still does on random basis and so do other social or say portal networks.
