General Software Discussion / Re: Another reason to drop Kaspersky?
« Last post by SKA on September 29, 2010, 07:35 AM »
Dear f0dder

In a roundabout way - you do agree the problem is windows <grin>

I agree for general public - there is  still no shift from Windows -> other OS's in 2011, but for geeks, nerds.... surely its happening now ?

In defense of Kaspersky:
He knows his co's resources are not enough , and Govts have more resources than his company, to combat malwares worldwide. He was just trying to enlist their support, that's all.

In offense at MS:
If robust file & process sensors("monitors?") came in-built in Windows OS's, malware / trojans problems could be more manageable.  Hence the shift to Mac, Linux, BSD etc

You are right -KIS2010 misses stuff that Combofix & MBAM (or SAS) specialist apps may catch.

Another option to consider : use a "cloud" product like HitmanPro with your choice of AV :

Seems older Kaspersky versions(2010 and earlier) not so good, so you better need to use version KIS 2011(even this version needs Maintenance patch due shortly) or another product.

What Combofix fixes are only certain difficult "rats" - you should not think it can replace a regular antivirus/internet security product.  Combofix is only recommended by experts after they have eliminated other reasons , its not something you should rely on exclusively - its improper use can really break your system.  As its updated almost daily, so each time you need it its best to get a fresh /latest version from bleepingcomputer site.

Most AVs have to deal with greater sophistry of current malwares esp on Windows.  Protecting your system via Defensewall or similar HIPS and LUA/SRP , and/or suitable firewall can save you a lot of grief , but it will slow down your PC - one needs to live with this fact on Windows.

Recent lnk & dll search order flaws in Windows are further evidence that one needs to review one's protection on the net very carefully.

I have 3 domains parked with Network Solutions, which becoming costlier to renew.

Any reliable host to whom I could transfer/renew these domains to - any ideas?
I dont have any websites yet, I just need the domains parked with private registration/similar security.

Is it easy to transfer my domains out of Network Solutions' clutches ?

Grateful for any tips

Syncback Pro (USD 49.95) or SE (USD 30/-) are another option.

My only niggle (which is carried over from version 4) is that the 'exclusions' list doesn't seem to work properly - ie. if you add a folder to the exceptions list it should ignore the folder contents both in scan but also realtime monitoring. Unfortunately it still blocks applications in the excluded folders when you try to run them.

Carol , does this work for you :
To allow avast! to ask you what to do when a virus/PUP/suspicious file  is found:
change action settings of avast!, which is set to block by default.
1. Open avast! GUI
2. Click REAL-TIME SHIELDS [on left side of GUI]
3. Click File System Shield
4. Click Expert Settings [on right side of GUI]
5. Click Actions [on the left side of the new FILE SYSTEM SHIELD SETTINGS window that popped up]
6. Change first dropdown box to Ask [under Select action to be performed when a virus is found] , You can also specify some backup actions.
Repeat Step #6 for PUP(potentially unwanted programs)  and Suspicious files

Being disappointed with Eset AV v4 , I wonder if anyone here tried this Avast v5 Pro (and maybe the new Internet Suite v5) ?

Grateful for any tips/comments on new Avast v5 versus the rest (eg. Avira Antivir Premium)  ?

On XP-SP3 latest updates with IE8 I fixed it with this(found longback from DC) :
copy into notepad , save it as a .reg file. double click it to add it to registry. Reboot and it should be sorted.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\TooltipAnimation]

“SetWindowPos”=”HwndInsertAfter, Hwnd_Top”
“SetForegroundWindow”=dword:00000001

General Software Discussion / Re: Eudora 8.0b7

Cyberdiva:
Below report by Brana(maker of excellent addons for Eudora 6/7 - http://e-gadgets.fre...stia.com/plugins.htm):

" Win7 (x64) works fine with Eudora 7.1.0.9 and these 2 tweaks:

1. if monitor is connected via VGA cable (analog):
for crisp fonts - change system font "effects" from "Clear Type" to "Standard"
2. for common controls & registry compatibility:
    eudora shortcut -> properties -> compatibility -> Windows XP (SP3)  "

more on compatibility mode:
http://www.howtogeek...-compatibility-mode/
http://windows.about...mpatibility_mode.htm

As x64 works ,guess x86 (32-bit) Win7 will also work fine.

NOTE: MUST install Eudora outside Program Files location, most folks use C:\Eudora (or D:\Eudora). OR create an alternate Program Files (eg: Program Files Alt) and install Eudora there.

Dear T

To back up XP PRo - some other choices(apart from Macrium) :
- Drive Snapshot
- Image for Windows

For Win7 Pro: It has its own Backup/Imaging system built-in, which seems to work fine.

Dear Carol/ Cyberdiva

Why I ask is I get the feeilng Win7 Starter is a "light" edition -add a conventional AV and its bound to get slow - or no ?

Or its vital to upgrade SE(starter edition) to HP(Home Premium)  or Professional ?

I was wrong - "Eudora 8" is based on Thunderbird v3 (not TB v2) + Penelope.

The name Eudora 8 is a mistake - it's actually Thunderbird v2(I doubt its v3)  + Penelope extension to make it resemble Eudora v7.

I wait for MailForge(formerly Odysseus)  to get better (now at v1.3.3 , with a long way to go yet) - this is much closer to original Eudora than "Eudora 8" ever will be.

Also, a suggestion: Listing the FF extension on the Mozilla Addons site would avoid problems like this; they review all extensions and make sure that mistakes like this are few, if any.

It seems Mozilla will restrict use of extensions from v3.6 onwards:

http://www.symantec....e-firefox-extensions

"In Firefox there is the possibility to drop an extension as a raw component directly into the core folders of Firefox. This means that the component is loaded invisibly for the user. The user has no facility to disable or uninstall it from within the browser, let alone knowing that it is there in the first place.

"To solve this issue, the Mozilla developers have now decided to remove this capability and only load their own core components in Firefox 3.6 and beyond."
