Seems Ireland is looking into the like button too - Irish data chiefs set to test if Facebook ‘Like’ button is illegal.

A very interesting point is brought up in the article:

The incoming complaint focuses on how the ‘Like’ button allows Facebook to track the online activity of any web user – even those who are not among the social networking site’s 750 million members worldwide.

By logging the IP addresses of internet users when they visit pages containing an embedded ‘Like’ button, the social network is theoretically able to build a profile of that user’s browsing habits, and then use this to its commercial advantage.

This was illegal under EU law, Weichert argued, because Facebook would harvest this data through web servers based in the US – and not within the EU, as the commissioner said was required.

Seriously, I just watched a 2 minute video clip and was having to keep clicking those annoying as hell "close" buttons that are so small, you miss half the video trying to aim on them...if you miss, your taken to the spam site, and when you finally hit the damn X, the video has finished.

Were they all youtube ads, or annotations added by the uploader? I've never seen more than 1 pre-video ad and 1 small overlay ad on a video. The uploader however can include as many annotation boxes as they wish, any or all of which can be links to spam sites.

As I read that I was thinking this is so bizzare, just doesn't make sense, etc etc. Then I got down to the 5th paragraph and realise ah, everything before that was lies and now it's getting onto the truth. Infact the German goverment is just doing it's small part to protect people from highly insideous privacy violations by a large, international company.

Fair play Germany :Thmbsup:

I completely agree that they are inhuman exploitative scum, what I hate more are the ordinary folks that celebrate these types of people as capitalistic heros, fighting the good fight to make money at all costs.

From a quick read it looks like MineOS+ uses the proper server, not a custom one. That ram usage is amazing so!

I have at times run the Minecraft server on another PC on my home network using YAJSW so it would run as an NT Service. It did work pretty well, but the RAM usage would sit at around 800mb, even when noone was logged in???

Has anyone ever considered setting up a DC minecraft server? I'd say it could be cool, I know I'd log in. That said I do realize minecraft servers need alot of resources, especially RAM.

Well you can check and change the various Environment Variables (that's what those %whatever% are) through "Control Panel" > "System" > "Advanced System Setting" > "Environment Variables". With that you can see what it's currently set to and change it accordingly.

To make the job easier I'd recommend Rapid Environment Editor. Personally I use it whenever I need to mess those variables.

With regards to C++, the head of MS's C++/CLI development is Herb Sutter, one of the most well respected C++ experts, and a key individual in the development of the new C++11 standard. If that doesn't prove MS's support for C++ I don't know what could.

Also they developed, in house, one of the best C++ compilers.

If Windows 8 adopts an HTML5/JavaScript app infrastructure there wont be a lot of apps ready for it to run.

If the future of Windows apps is HTML5/JavaScript then Windows has no future.

If is the key word! This article, Windows 8 for software developers: the Longhorn dream reborn?, seems to suggest those fears are unfounded.

Is not the issue here that a government has produced a product which happens to be directly competing with a company and the government is now going to completely undercut that companies prices? That companies taxes are directly funding it's competitor.

Honestly? I just don't know, personally I find it very hard to believe these where academically intelligent i.e. the sort of intelligence this thread is largely dissing. However I do imagine they were very socially and emotionally intelligent, the type of intelligence this thread is praising.

But then my musings on it are no more proof than anyone elses, what we need here are more pretty graphs of IQ results, and maybe some EQ results too :D

There are lots of words; wisdom, intelligent, smart, knowledge, etc all of which mean slightly different, sometimes overlapping, things. And possessing only one in isolation isn't going to get you very far in life. Also there are many types of intelligence, many fields of knowledge.

But honestly, simply dismissing the sort of academic intelligence that an IQ test measures as "one of the minor and more unimportant intelligences in Real Life!" is a bit arrogant.

I'd really recommend going the hackintosh route, you can buy leopard/lion legally so you're not pirating, sure you are breaking EULA but then running it in a VM also breaks the EULA. Just check out http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/ and the connected forums, if you have the compatible hardware them dual booting really is the best option. I've gone that route and it was fairly painless.
