General Software Discussion / Re: Montage Videos

^sorry about that -- but my point remains Contro.
If there are no recommendations from DC members, why not try Gizmo's recommendations? (Or other sources - how did you get on with ShotCut?)
You can then let us know how good they are, if they do what you want, are easy to use etc. thereby giving something back to the community.

^ were they recommended by someone?
Do you not trust gizmo's recommendations? I'm not saying they always right, but if you don't get any personal recommendations, it's a good place to start.

e.g. for one app they say:
"impressive features, simple and intuitive user interface". Sounds good to me...

EDIT// I'm using Markor -- was one of the first I installed, and I liked it, so didn't really try out any of the others.

Can anyone recommend a note taking app that will store notes locally and allow for export?

Diarium is one possibility, I can scroll through entries with the timeline view, and it allows export as txt, but I'm curious about alternatives.

(I've tried a search but my search fu not very good and the internet doesn't seem to understand the word 'offline'...)

Migrating from 7 to 10 was free. While it is not free anymore officially, Microsoft still doesn't charge you if you upgrade. There is a loophole for people with disabilities. And Microsoft doesn't check if that moniker applies to you or not.

Anyway, your registration data from Windows 7 is retrievable for the Windows 10 installer too. While I would not expect it to be the case, if you were using a Microsoft account in Windows 7, your registration data is stored at Microsoft. Reusing that account will activate Windows 10 as well. So, there are 3 ways around activation in your case. However, you should check if you now have Windows 10 Home instead of Windows 10 Pro. Although you (the user) would expect this to be the case, but if I understood correctly, that is only if you bought a retail version of Windows 7 Pro. If you bought an OEM system with Windows 7 Pro on it, it got demoted to Windows 10 Home after the upgrade to 10.
  • yeah, I was just surprised the upgrade was still working -- and in such a user friendly manner at that...
  • local account, so yeah, I presume the installer retrieved the data
  • they were generous and gave me Pro version. It's a Dell business laptop fwiw, but still OEM I presume. Note that here in Germany you are legally allowed sell OEM copies of Windows for general use (I've bought and installed a couple of OEM copies of earlier versions of Windows over the years). That could possibly be a factor here.

I upgraded a six-year old laptop to Windows 10 today. Downloaded the ISO on the machine itself -- it automatically presumes it's for that machine unless you indicate otherwise. I then replaced the HDD with an SSD and installed.

What surprised me is that it is activated without any input from me (digital license) -- I can only presume it used the license from the previous Windows 7 install. (I was hoping I would be able to use the 7 key to upgrade, but wasnt expecting it to be this easy. It was Windows 7 pro fwiw.

Another plus is it fixed a couple of problems (a very long running problem where the graphics driver crashed, seemingly related to the touchpad; and a more recent problem of faded screen colours in some situations). So, I'm a happy camper :-)

google translate is having a bad hair day --
I wanted to translate a German Dell support page to English -- it got translated to a mish-mash of mostly Dutch with spatterings of English.
Especially entertaing though were the feedback questions at the bottom:

@sportman12 this is now the thread for your install queries.
Please do the following:

how do I get a API  I am not a computer savy can you please tell me the directions to install it please
hi sportman, see the link below. For this bit you dont have to be computer savvy, just read the instructions carefully!!!!

  • you do have to tick the first couple of boxes, but,
  • you don't have to tick consent to receive emails from them
  • do tick the "I am not a robot" box -- you may be presented with some puzzle to solve to further prove your humanity

You will be told how to proceed (you will get the API per email). Let us know how you get on.

So, I presume you have the API key.
Restart the install and add the API key as requested at that stage where you took the screenshot

A related article (also ZDNet)
OK Microsoft, you win: I’m buying a Windows 11 PC

with this required hardware-enforced containerization and virtualization tech, Windows 11 will isolate applications and processes much more easily. It will be much more difficult for malware in an errantly running application to access resources it isn't supposed to. It will only access the resources in that specific application task that it infects, such as a particular browser tab.
if you're a Windows user --  consumer or enterprise -- you want this. If you don't have hardware that supports it, it's worth getting a new system.

The problem is that Microsoft buried the lead and employed bait-and-switch tactics to induce us to upgrade, rather than simply being straight with us from the beginning. What Microsoft should have said is: "Look, we can't implement these important architectural changes in the OS to protect you from the bad guys unless your hardware supports this."
OTOH, they say that if you have recent hardware that supports it, this and other security changes enforced in 11 are already implemented in Windows 10...

It's fairly easy (using Everything here) to search for filetype, sort by date and Alt+drag somewhere to create shortcuts.
Updating with new files is probably more difficult, you would have to keep track of what date you last did it...

The AskWoody "plus" newsletter gives good advice each month about updates and problems with same, and when it's (hopefully) okay to install.
It does cost but you can pay as little as $5 for a year iirc.

If you dislike the concept of RV's that much, you'll hate channels like this one about tiny houses (on or off wheels).
Sounds interesting :-[
But the link not working here (?)

I have a ScreenshotCaptor version 4.41.0 with a digital signature of February 15, 2021. Why does ScreenshotCaptor version with a digital signature of May 31, 2021 exactly the same version number - 4.41.0? The author lacks digits for version numbering?
actually I think it was that he had too many digits for the previous model :P
