It seems like every new PC bought out there has trial software installed nagging the crap out of you to purchase it every day, week, month etc.
You always mean to clean it out but you never quite get around to it, instead you put up with or disable the nagging.

Most companies when developing new products and software give them "project names", like longhorn for vista.
Why not just give it a project name until one comes to you?
Like "SkyClip" or "LightingClip" or something.

Also notice there is nothing on the front page about a "membership" fee that I can find. The scam starts when you click for the download, it then asks for name and email addy, then upon continuing it makes the "subscription" pitch.
Another reason that buried pricing is suspicious.

Here's a quick script written in FBSL. It's only been tested on WinXP.
Simply click the icon to toggle between visible and not visible.
If you have an explorer window open you'll need to refresh it to see the changes.

Exactly.
I didn't post the article to expect anyone to accept it as a hard fact.
But I think it is indicative of how the web, and who's using it and for what, has changed in the last decade.
And maybe it'll make people rethink about how they are looking at it. Because not all people see connecting and using the web the same way.
It could be useful in determining how to reach out to those who aren't quite as invested as most are here.

The study is by Pew Research however.

If it was from a libtard news outlet they'd be telling people what to think.

Update- A quick scan of the original report indicates it is being misrepresented, first the figures are relating to connectivity (the internet and mobiles) not high tech in general. The actual results which were combined into the 49% figure are as follows-

8% Inexperienced Experimenters
They occasionally take advantage of interactivity, but if they had more experience, they might do more with ICTs.
 
15% Light But Satisfied 
They have some technology, but it does not play a central role in their daily lives. They are satisfied with what ICTs do for them.

11% Indifferents 
Despite having either cell phones or online access, these users use ICTs only intermittently and find connectivity annoying.

15% Off the Network
Those with neither cell phones nor internet connectivity tend to be older adults who are content with old media.

Which paints a very different picture I think.

P.S. Cpilot, I know you didn't misquote the original halfbytes blog so my disagreements with it here are not aimed at you at all

The 49% figure came from the preface/title page of the original report. The numbers you quoted are from further into the report where the analysis takes place and methods and classifications are explained.
I think the results are worthy of discussion, different people can interpret the data in whichever way they see it.

I fail to see how using tech devices occasionally and being hostile to them can be lumped together. By their logic they could just as easily have said-

57% are avid, voracious or occasional users of all things high tech or are hostile towards high tech
23% of users embrace technologies for social networking and employment

If you read through the entire study (the link to the pdf is at the bottom of the blog post) it'll give you an idea of their methods and how they arrived at their conclusions.
They go into much more detail about each category of users and how they arrived at the method for classification.
Like any survey/poll type of study take from what you will, but I think it does point out a definite divide between certain committed technology types and casual users.

The Technologies gap

A Fox News article points to a research study done by the Pew Internet and American Life Project that found that nearly 50 Percent of Americans have little use for Internet and cell Phones.
In a nutshell the findings are:


8% are avid and voracious users of all things high tech
23% of users embrace technologies for social networking and employment
10% rely on mobile devices
10% use tech devices but find them a bother
49% use tech devices occasionally or are hostile towards high tech

The groups are broken down into 10 different groups of users with one group (8%) being referred to as the "Lackluster Veterans".

Yeah I was afraid that might happen.

What I would like to be able to do is create a section on a webpage what could be updated by simply uploading a text file.
Like a sort of miniblog without the database.
A way to easily change the information without having to make the change and then re-uploading the entire html file.

OK I've looked around but I'm having trouble trying to find what I want.

What I want to be able to do is place a folder on a server and set up a location on my webpage that will read a text file placed into that folder to display the text as it's formatted in the text file.

I hope I'm explaining this right cause I sure can't figure out how to google for it.

Maybe you could set up something like Digg, where users submit urls and everyone votes for em based on how commercial or not they are.
If their voted out then they get deleted and only the ones approved by the majority would be left. Then you could use a site search feature that would return only user approved links.

BTW mouser, I want to accumulate more than just enough to get by.
The prospect of eating dog food in my old age is very unappealing.

Making money is not inherently evil, and as it was pointed out before servers don't grow on trees and IT fairies don't come out at night to service them (although there could be some debate on that  ).

I'm curious as well, there are several issues at play with this that can have some real consequences as far as what is allowed on these sites and what is not.
It could also stifle the concept that Digg and other websites are based on.

Just the litigation potential itself could change a lot of things.
