Post New Requests Here / Re: [IDEA] Book Tracking 1.1
« Last post by nickodemos on February 25, 2014, 07:41 AM »
Member there as well. It is where I go most often but again dealing with the net and how things can change after a few years. Goodreads was bought by Amazon and I know from exp what happens when major companies buy a smaller successful one. It slowly gets corrupted and many times destoyed and taken offline.

Post New Requests Here / [IDEA] Book Tracking 1.1
« Last post by nickodemos on February 24, 2014, 08:39 PM »
I posted this in another thread and was told I would get a better response here. So full copy of what I said is below.

I have always been into books. I am between 3-4000 read books so far in my life. During this time I have tried on multiple occasions to try and track down everything I have read with various levels of success.

Of the many programs out there they really do not do simple tracking very well. Some start out well and die. Some just don't have a clue. Others are kitchen sink varieties and the idea gets lost.

After using mousers epCheck program I was thinking that if something along the lines of this could be had it would be great.

Simple and basic program that can collect data from a stable website like worldcat and keep relevant information at hand.

Tabs for author, series, name, and year.

So far there is not alot out there. Many just fall short. Calibre does not come close since as you add books it gets unwieldy. Use of a spreadsheet is time consuming without out import.

I do not want online since as we have seen over the years things change or they get bought out. Or worse they go offline and all data is lost.

Dreaming but if anyone has an idea it would be great to hear of it. And I already read everything in this forum and others, so most things you might post I probably already looked and and dismissed. So I would imagine it would have to be a hard to find program. Also freeware.

Zotero is nice for tracking information I need to keep track of for writing papers but not what is needed for book tracking.

DataCrow has improved greatly since I first tried it many years ago. Playing with it just now I remember the heavy demand that it has on java usage. Runs very slow on my computer and I can imagine only will get worse as the DB builds.

Color me an idiot for thinking about one of mouser's program while writing about Skwire's epCheck.

I'll post in coding snacks and see what bites.

The Form Letter Machine / Custom date
« Last post by nickodemos on February 10, 2014, 07:42 PM »
What I am looking for is the ability to add the option of date in the future. Either by the hour or by days.

I do many pasting of basic information and this program can help but in playing with it I notice that while there is a fine degree of being able to customize the date there seems to be no way to add future dates to it.

I would like to be able to add in the custom date something along the lines of:

Default:
%A, %B %d, %Y (%I:%M%p)
Monday, February 10, 2014 (08:32PM)

Possible adjustments:
%A, %B %d+3, %Y (%I:%M%p)
Thursday, February 13, 2014 (08:32PM)

As you can see if I was able to add +3 to the date it would change the rest of the information.

It would also be nice to have an option of adding a countdown or count up option to something.

IE:
Bob you have till the agreed upon due date Thursday, March 30, 2014 (47 days) to get the project completed.

I really appreciate your enthusiasm for epCheck so I hope you're not too disappointed when I tell that most of your requests are somewhat out of scope for what I intended for epCheck.  I'll go through your requests...

What can I say. When I find things that just work I tend to like to see them get fleshed out if they can be.

Nah. Never disappointed. I work as a moderator on a website and for the first two years I bombarded the owner on things that could be done or would come in handy. Maybe 1/30 ever seen the light of day. What he was able to get in there though made huge improvements.

So with that said, don't think I get upset when things I think of get shot down. After all if you don't have someone pointing things out, or nudging you a bit, you might not follow through on the ideas you have not implemented yet or might come at something from another angle.

Search function would have been nice but is a none issue. How about a workaround.

Noticed that the save to CSV only does one series at a time. If we could highlight what we liked one could select all and then search a CSV file.

OK. Maybe another feature request.

I mentioned once before how I like to go back through older series and watch them. This is usually a catch up with the episode by episode when the current running series are not active.

Is there a way to add either a second tab for series or maybe have it so that if you right click on the series tab it will switch from "current/ongoing" to a "canceled/catch when I can" tab.

Right now, for me, there is around a 100 in the current tab (many shows are British and tend to be 4-8 episodes long but take a year to get to the next season), and once I get around to adding all the canceled series it could balloon up to 250-300 shows.

So to boil it down it would/could be pretty convenient to be able to separate these. Also a slight boon would be that any series added to a second tab could be excluded from the auto refresh and weekly tab so manual updating would be needed.

Maybe even a chance at a third tab for all series previously watched in full so one could go back over them at a later date but not be bothered with them taking up space in the active ongoing tabs.

Another thought. If people keep using your program to keep track of shows new and canceled it might be nice to have a search functions on the story line. The idea being you know it was a TV show you seen but can narrow it down. If you did it on the web there would be many false positive. If you used epCheck it knows specifically which shows you seen and can narrow it down with keyword search.

I know this would probably be expanding on what your original intent was for this program but it if ideas are not presented.... Programs like yours will reach a matured state and updating will fall off so I am trying to get as many ideas/request in so that even after five years after the last update your program can still be successfully used.

Another edit. Just was looking and thgought about  maybe having the # and episode column set to a default minimum so as to be able to always have that information visible. Seen that many times when # hits three digits things get covered.

Minor one.

If you change the setting for 'The' to be at the end it will not update the ones you had added before.

Nope. Works well. Like I mentioned before, with a program like this to track my shows I no longer need to use online sites for it. Or a heavy clunky program that does 'more'.

Small, clean, and does what it is ment to well.

Maybe one issue.

I noticed that on a few occasions that it would take a long time to launch. I am assuming that it is gathering information at this time from the web and updating information about the shows.

Is it possible to have that part working as a background thread while the GUI itself loads? Sorta like load last state and after GUI is active for xxx milliseconds it gathers the information? Maybe it is only noticeable for me since I am working on a older P4.

OK. One other suggestion.

Maybe when you click to check that a show is watched it could be removed from the weekly tab? I have it go back 21 days since I tend to skip some shows in favor of others. I tend to miss many at a time since I am a full time student and a single parent with an active kid life. So I miss many at a time and why it is so long back.

Other than that I can say it is done for me. Except maybe watching the download folder so a dbl click would launch the show itself. ;-)

Sounds good for watched INI.

Might reiterate my suggestion of listing all episodes ID on first load of the series in the watched INI. When you mark it as seen it removes that episodes ID from the watched INI. Once again the idea is to steadily make the INI smaller over time.

Normal idea of recording.
If it is not there then not seen. If watched mark ID in file so that it is marked seen. (File grows as more and more series are added. More data needs to be read slower program runs.)

Just reversing the logic of recording the data.
If show ID is there it is not seen. If it is not there then marked seen. (File starts large and gets smaller over time no matter how many series you have. Less data faster response.)

-edit
I just seen that what is watched is in the config.ini. My idea still stands on reverse recording and it can stay in the config.ini.

OK. Things are working well as of the moment.

One request though. Possible to have in the options the ability to download only one image file? I, and others might be as well, am pretty simple when it comes to the image. I am fine with what ever one downloads, just that I went through and deleted all but one image per folder and it reduced the data folder by 90 percent.

I seen you recommend it earlier. Checked it out and for some reason it would not connect to the net. Dropped it for now since your program is close to what I want. Dead simple and easy while being portable and small. Just the seen and not seen is the only thing lacking for me. I will bid my time.

Not a programmer but I think I can see your point on adding the keeping track of seen shows.

How about default all series as seen before todays date. If something is not seen then add a right click so that one can change status and then add the episode ID to a master list to change the color in the viewing DB.

Might be easier if you go by air date instead since it is already listed in the viewing area.

-Edit

I should have stated that all new series added should default as seen. If none have been seen then it is easy enough to highlight all in the series and change the status. After that nothing is changed unless done manually.

So to clarify. Go by airdate to track. If no airdate is listed by series ID then all have been seen. If none have been seen then all airdate will be in master list and as they are changed manually then that airdate is removed from the list.

Idea being that the list will actually shrink over time instead of getting larger.

Nice app. I am a person who watches more TV shows than movies and it can get complicated. I am currently using http://www.myepisodes.com/ to try and keep track of new shows coming and many series that have been canceled.

There have been times in the past where the site went down so I started to looking for a simple app that would do the same thing. Yours comes close. It would be nice if I could track what shows I have seen since at times I either job series and do not come back for some time or I have no time to watch anything for weeks at a time. All said it can get confusing if you are watching new releases and casually trying to catch up on old classics at the same time.

Possible to get epCheck to record watched shows? It would be nice if you clicked on the episode number it could change it to a color the user sets to indicate seen.

Also I noticed that when I have it in maxed view that there is a large blank column after the 'Air Date'. Possible that instead of being blanked out that you could add the episodes summary there? Would be a nice way to see all episodes summaries at a glance in case your trying to find a specific show for another to watch.

If that doesn't work for you, you can check out this: http://www.neiljohan...oftware/nbclipboard/

The latter worked well. Using it just the way I wanted to. Thank you for pointing me to this program.

Finished Programs / Re: Simple clipboard request
« Last post by nickodemos on December 08, 2010, 12:26 AM »
Nope. Not what I needed. Like I mentioned before I would love it to copy a unlimited amount of simple text data. But it has to paste it back from the first thing copied on it's own and delete it from the list.

So say I copied 100 items to the program. The first thing I paste is the first thing I copied and then it is deleted automatically from the internal list. The second thing I paste is the second thing I copied and it is deleted from the list.

Basically I want to copy data and then paste it back in the order copied without having to choose what to paste. It just moves on the the next thing on the list and removes once pasted till there is nothing left from what I copied.

Admittedly this has limited use but I have seen many other people asking for something similar on my hunt for a program like this. This is a perfect idea for moving data on a spread sheet form.

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Simple clipboard request
« Last post by nickodemos on December 07, 2010, 07:04 PM »
I have looked everywhere. While I found one software that was nice and worked well it was not what I really wanted. CopyPasteXP20

What I need is a simple way of Copying text to the clipboard and then when I paste back to something it paste in the order I copied/cut in.

IE I copy 1,2,3,4 I want to past back 1,2,3,4. So far all I can find is clipboard programs that want to expand the clipboard to hold in memory all text copied. That I don't need. Once pasted back to something it should be deleted.
