Why do you guys keep blanking out the product name? Seems pretty relevant to me...

I don’t know - Darwin's first post started it. And like a good little sheep I guess I followed suit.

Probably because Darwin's a weeny! (Makes me a weeny follower).  :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« Last post by J-Mac on January 29, 2010, 02:33 AM »
I have to say that I purchased DOpus 9 over two years ago, thinking it was pretty darned expensive but I had such good recommendation for it - I think from Darwin - so I purchased a license plus a USB Export license. Two plus years and all updates have been included and I love it to boot; heck, I can't complain.

This is why I switched to LastPass last year, and that after trying several other alternatives for over a year prior to that. After purchasing a total of four licenses from R******m starting back when they first appeared their support steadily dropped in quality. I only contacted them maybe four or five times in several years. The first few were decent; the last several contacts were similar to Darwin's.

LastPass is not without its own shortcomings, but it is working much better than the other brand. Particularly with Firefox releases, which the other guys usually catch up with after a few months each release.

I agree.
The other one that 'irks' me even more is Me  versus I
All through grade school the teachers were pounding into the students, "Mary and I go to the market".

Yet, today, I cringe when I hear a statement like, "At the party it will only be William and I"
Subject versus* Predicate.

To be fair, I remember teachers who likened any usage of the words "...and me..." together at any time to committing a felony! I guess they felt that trying to distinguish correct usage from incorrect was hair-splitting to a degree that not many children would understand, so they just outlawed all uses.

Thanks!

I'm also using Ultra Recall Pro, plus I have IQ but I just dabble in it now and then - haven't really taken the time to figure it out. So I have3 no real need for myBase. But.…  I really had to keep hammering myself to keep from buying it anyway at this price.

So what did they do? They extended the Bits sale another day. I'm thinking about locking myself away to keep me from going to the Bits site and.…  Aarrggh!   ;)

vizacc, I was kidding you with the "Alwin" thing!

How do they sell software? Same way as always, I guess. Their software isn't bad. But they used to have several online sources you could use. He changed that to only use their database, which is lacking. When this was first announced the database was severely lacking data and they asked for the paying customers to submit data and build the database. Plus now it appears they're is trying to convert the software to an online service. Just read this thread and do a search here and you'll see what kind of crap they have pulled in the past. Nothing new here - we all should know better by now.

Thank you.

You guys were talking about Amazon, (whatever) database lookups.

I suggested, instead of relying on Amazon or whatever for their book/cd/music lookups, Collectorz would spend that money on getting a look-up database for themselves.

that way, it would satisfy all the look-up queries they had.

You really think that Collectorz will spend money on their database? Are you kidding me? Or are you serious? (Alwin.…. is THAT you?  ;D )

No, Collectorz.com wants you and I to build their database for them. And to pay for the pleasure of doing so. Don’t believe me? Go ask him.  8)

speaking of lookups -

for those curious

you can buy 3.1 million-record music collection with all the artists, CDs, tracks, timings, discography information for a 5-figure sum.

with that, it could probably fulfill all those look-up queries.

Uhh...   Huh?

I switched to Mediaman a while ago, that handles all (physical) media (books, DVD, CD, games, cartoons) in a very nice way.  If you want to change, just try it.  The barcode scanner that can be used with a simple Webcam is a plus when you have tons of media to index.

Interesting. Do you like Mediaman? Their website shows a pretty picture but is kinda light on detailed features. Does the program do online lookups for your media? I.e., you scan (or type) in some barcodes and the program searches online for the DVD/CD/books, etc.? If so, what databases are available to search? Does it offer a selection of online databases?

A lot of questions but I didn't see any of that listed on the Mediaman website. Also, can you add your own scanned DVD/CD/book covers if necessary? (I have some older books and even CD/DVDs where all cover images available online are different than mine).

I am definitely interested in a program that offers all collections under one roof, so to speak, however those I have looked at were not really very oriented to media collections; they looked more like if I simply created a large Access database and created reports in Access!

Thanks!

Jim

EDIT:  Forgot to mention... I once trialed an application that offered webcam barcode scanning and I was less than impressed with it. I much prefer to use a wireless scanner with some memory so I can go around and "collect" a lot of barcodes at once and then dump them into the program and let it do its magic.

Then again:

So yes, Carol. Good call! Though Collectorz.com has never been big on IMDB, it was one of their available online search databases in Movie Collector 5.x. Not anymore of course.

Thanks!

Isn't IMDB an Amazon thing anyway?

Not that I had heard, but stuff happens fast anymore and it may very well be true at this point. I can't always keep up!  :)

Perhaps something similar happened with other services which caused the move to a standalone db from the start? Perhaps IMDB or others complained in a similar fashion. Either way, I know Alwins eyes lit up like a child on christmas opening the new xbox 360 they wanted when he saw this message.

Nope. Not the case. It was just a selective move on the developer's part, according to the developer.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what this does to the apps... Seems pretty unprofessional not to have noticed that point from the Amazon license before developing the apps, tbh.

I don’t know - their Book Collector 6 relies on Amazon exclusively, via their "own" database front of course. However if Amazon weren't used their book database would be worthless. (That is, worth even less than it is now.) All new books entered would get absolutely no search results. Alwin would have to either open up access to other databases or try to build his up substantially immediately. Anyone purchasing an app that can't get Internet results would be crying for refunds I would think.

Jim

PS - couldn't have happened to a more deserving developer IMO.

There is one particular grammar mistake that really irks me: a/an usage.

People that misuse them tend to fall into 2 groups:

Native English speakers that tend to overuse "a".

  • Examples: a apple, a egg, a ice cream cone, a octopus, a umbrella

Non-native English speakers that tend to overuse "an".

  • Examples: an ball, an computer, an shirt.

The native English speakers bother me more than the non-native ones, since this is something you should have learned early on in grammar school.

Biggest issue with a / an is which to use before an acronym. E.g., "an FBI agent" ("an" modifying the "eff" sound) or "a FBI agent" ("a" modifying the word Federal that the F stands for). I have always used the former - mainly because the latter just sounds stupid! - but when trying to settle a small debate on this I researched on the web and found authorities backing both usages. Go figure!

It's simple enough to do yourself - everything I launch from Linkman opens in a new tab. Install the TabMix Plus extension and configure tab openings for all possible launches from links, other applications, etc.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to configure FARR for finding the right exe shortcuts?
« Last post by J-Mac on January 13, 2010, 11:58 PM »
Is there anyway to set different directories for launching apps than for searching? For example I have a directory where I download all application installation files along with any other related files for those programs - it's a very large directory! (~20 GB). All the .exe files there are for program installation, not for program launching. Occasionally FARR finds an .exe file there before it finds the .lnk file in the Start Menu or the .exe file in Program Files and I end up launching that. Causes the program to start installing itself again.

I can't find a way to exclude directories, though I guess I could just not include that directory in the listing of search folders. However I DO want those folders available for general searching; just not for launching programs.

Not sure if this is clear at all. Guess I'll find out!

Thanks!

I was able to update to 5.0. Only bad part of this is that they try to install Software Informer. There's a box to uncheck but if you are moving at normal speed you might miss it. I always go very slowly whenever installing something from GAOTD just for that reason.

Jim

EDIT: I should have mentioned that Software Informer appears to be built-in to the installer package by GAOTD, not Sothink. So don't hold what I said against Sothing. (I saw a few little ads on the GAOTD site for their "Software Informer).  Jim

Has anyone used this program? Or anything from Sothink?

This program apparently is sold for $84.95 normally - or at least the GAOTD page and Sothink's website claim. Looks like SWF Quicker 5.0 is released and this version is 4.7. Still, heck of a deal IF it is a good, reliable program.

Any comments?

Thanks!

Hate to keep posting here so frequently, but J-Mac, I wanted to let you know that I just released Breevy 2.24 today, which adds support for importing MS Word AutoCorrect entries. :)
-P.a.t.r.i.c.k. (January 06, 2010, 03:43 PM)

Thanks Patrick.

To be honest, I haven't even installed Breevy yet - been kinda busy, and since there is no way to import my abbreviations/phrases from other programs it will take a fair amount of time for me to get Breevy up and running.   :o

So I believe that I downloaded 2.21; I'll make sure to check that I have the latest version before installing it.

Thank you.

I am using Movie Collector and DVD Profiler. I won't upgrade Movie Collector to the latest version because too much has been stripped from the program and the developer - a real pisser - is basically trying to force his customer base to build his own database - he doesn't allow searches to other well-established sources like Amazon, IMDB, DVD Empire, etc. - and he's also pushing toward an all-online service. I am still using v. 5.6 but I'm sure that will stop working for me at some point.

DVD Profiler is OK but nothing special. I doubt I will stick with that but for the time being I am using both. That would be a pain when building my collection from scratch but since my collection is pretty well established it is just a matter of adding a DVD here and there.

Thanks!
